When you think of Pedialyte, you probably think of kids who drink it to feel better. But now, the company is targeting a different demographic: adults, who are fighting a hangover. This month, the company released its medical grade powder packs called Sparkling Rush. Could it be the cure your holiday hangover? “Well, I think if you're going to drink, obviously pay attention to your intake and make sure you're eating at the same time,” says Dr. Chris Fellenz with Kaiser Permanente. Dr. Fellenz says if you've missed that boat, drinks like Pedialyte could be a good option to fight your holiday hangover. “In terms of replenishing the lost electrolytes and replenishing the essential nutrients that you're losing, sometimes oral rehydration solutions can help,” he says. Pedialyte says its Sparkling Rush replenishes the body with twice the electrolytes and half the sugar of leading sports drinks. But Dr. Fellenz says anything that hydrates your body can help. “Use something that's pre-prepared,” the doctor recommends. “Use sports drinks; don't use energy drinks that have caffeine in them. They dehydrate you more. Try and keep up one to one in terms of replacing the fluids that you take in the fluids that you're trying to replace.” If you can't get your hands on Sparkling Rush, Dr. Fellenz says you probably have everything you need to make a DIY version in your fridge.“Mixing some juice with some water, that'll add the sugar in the salts that you need for rehydration, where you can make your own rehydration formula with a couple tablespoons of sugar and half a teaspoon of salt in a liter of water,” he says. 1640
Virtual reality could soon play a role in helping during childbirth. Some women are watching relaxing scenery and listening to soothing sounds during labor with VR goggles. It’s part of the research being done at Cedars-Sinai, a medical center in Los Angeles. The research is being done to see if VR can help ease pain as labor gets more intense. “What we did find was that women found it very helpful,” says Dr. Melissa Wong, who specializes in OB/GYN and maternal fetal medicine at Cedars-Sinai. “That women were describing it … one of my favorite descriptions of it was a woman (who) spoke about it as being like a virtual doula." That's some of the early feedback from women who took part in the study.Wong says there were some women who found the headset isolating because you can’t see others. But she thinks VR could be useful, whether someone is using pain medication or not. “I think it has the potential for the woman who wants to defer her epidural,” Wong says. “And then the other thing is, there are women who also don’t get complete relief from an epidural or who still feel significant anxiety even after an epidural.”The full results of the study will include the pain management scores and will be released in February 2020. 1255

A 4.9-magnitude earthquake was reported near Ridgecrest, California, on Friday morning -- one week after a 7.1-magnitude temblor struck Southern California, the US Geological Survey said. The region was originally hit on July 4 with a 6.4 earthquake, followed by a 7.1-magnitude quake the following day.The latest moderate earthquake briefly rattled CNN's Los Angeles bureau.Last week's major earthquake was centered 11 miles northeast of Ridgecrest, the USGS said. It unleashed 11 times the amount of energy of the previous day's quake, also centered near Ridgecrest, said CNN Meteorologist Brandon Miller.Though area residents are used to earthquakes, the tremor last Friday night swayed buildings and cracked streets and foundations, sending terrified locals into the streets. The shaking was felt as far away as Mexico and Las Vegas, according to the USGS.Ridgecrest, a desert town, is home to 28,000 people. The region at one point saw an average of one aftershock per minute since Friday's quake, according to the US Geological Survey website.More than 4,700 quakes have occurred since July 4, said USGS geophysicist John Bellini.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2019 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company.
