SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An Arizona man who carried out a series of knifepoint rapes in the city of San Diego 24 years ago, as well as two rapes in Riverside County in 2002 and 2004, was sentenced Thursday to 50 years to life in prison.Christopher Vanbuskirk, 47, of Goodyear, pleaded guilty last year to six rape counts for attacking the women on four occasions between August and November of 1995 in San Diego, as well as two women in the Coachella Valley area of Riverside County in March 2002 and November 2004.Prosecutors said the four San Diego cases occurred twice in the Tierrasanta neighborhood, once in Pacific Beach and once near San Diego Mesa College. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman was shot when a verbal argument turned physical in the Valencia Park neighborhood of San Diego, authorities said.It happened just after 9 p.m. Saturday in the 5000 block of Palin Street, according to San Diego police Officer Robert Heims.``During the argument it turned physical with pushing,'' Heims said. ``There were gunshots and a 35-year-old female was shot in the foot.''The woman was driven to a hospital with a wound not believed to be life-threatening, he said.There was no suspect description, Heims said. 549

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A roughly 36-hour spell of hazardously heavy surf will hit San Diego-area beaches beginning tomorrow, making the ocean extra dicey for surfers, swimmers and boaters.The large west swell is expected to arrive late Wednesday morning and generate waves of six to 14 feet in some locales, with the highest sets mostly occurring south of Encinitas, forecasters said.The anticipated conditions prompted the National Weather Service to issue a high-surf advisory, effective from 10 a.m. Wednesday to 10 p.m.Thursday, and a small-craft advisory, set to run from 6 a.m. Wednesday to 10 p.m. Thursday.Among the dangers posed by the rough local seas will be strong rip currents, minor coastal flooding and coastal erosion, according to the federal agency, which cautioned that entrances to harbors -- particularly Mission Bay -- will be difficult due to breakers large enough to capsize boats.The surf likely will peak late Wednesday into early Thursday, then slowly subside through Friday, the weather service advised. 1034

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who ambushed a janitorial worker at a Little Italy coffee shop at knifepoint, tried to sexually assault her and stole her SUV, was sentenced today to 14 years in state prison.Christopher Merron, 28, was also ordered to register as a sex offender for life.The attack occurred around 4:30 a.m. last Oct. 14 as the victim was cleaning the coffee shop in the 1700 block of India Street. Merron pushed the woman into a back room, took her car keys and threatened her with a knife, according to police and prosecutors.Following a struggle, she was able to break free and run out of the building, said San Diego police Lt. Jason Weeden.The assailant fled in the woman's 1998 GMC Jimmy. Merron was arrested in Mission Valley the next day and the victim's SUV was recovered, Weeden said.Merron pleaded guilty in January to assault with intent to commit a sex offense, robbery and sexual battery charges and admitted a knife-use sentencing enhancement allegation. Other charges, including kidnapping with the intent to commit a sex offense, attempted oral copulation, false imprisonment with force and auto theft, were dismissed at sentencing. 1165

Harb Sheets, who is registered without party preference, has worked in private practice since 1994 and as a staff psychologist at the consulting firm Workplace Guardians Inc. since 2000.Her position does not require Senate confirmation.Brown appointed Debra Reed, 62, to the California Horse Racing Board of Directors. Reed, who is registered without party preference, held several positions at Sempra Energy from 2010 to 2018, including executive chairman, chairman, president and CEO and executive vice president.Reed held several positions at San Diego Gas and Electric and Southern California Gas Co. from 2000 to 2010, including president and CEO, president and chief operating officer and president and chief financial officer, and is a member of the boards of directors of Rady Children Hospital Health Center; Caterpillar Inc.; Chevron Corp.; and State Farm Mutual.Reed's appointment require confirmation by the state Senate.The compensation for both positions is 0 per diem. 1179
