The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a warning to foodservice providers Wednesday to not use hard-boiled eggs produced by a Georgia company due to an outbreak of Listeria.The CDC says hard-boiled eggs produced by Almark Foods in Gainesville, Georgia is the cause of a Listeria outbreak that has killed one and sickened seven people in five states.The agency warned that consumers ordering foods that are made with hard-boiled eggs, like egg salad or deviled eggs, should ask the provider where they buy their hard-boiled eggs. The CDC advises that consumers not purchase those products if the provider uses Almark eggs or the provider does not know from where the eggs come.The CDC clarified that the Listeria outbreak was only limited to mass-produced eggs provided to food service providers, and the warning does not include Almark hard-boiled eggs that were sold directly in stores or other hard-boiled eggs sold in stores and restaurants.Symptoms of listeria incluide headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions in addition to fever and muscle aches. Symptoms can present themselves between one and four weeks after consuming food tainted with the bacteria. The Internal Revenue Service issued a warning Friday about a new twist on the usual impersonation phone scam. Officials say criminals are faking calls from the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS), an independent organization within the IRS. Similar to other IRS impersonation scams, the con artist makes unsolicited calls to the victim, falsely claiming to be from the IRS. But now scammers have discovered a way to "spoof" the phone number of the TAS office in Houston or New York. The victim answers or returns the call, the criminal requests personal information, including a Social Security number or individual taxpayer identification number. The TAS office helps taxpayers resolve IRS issues, such as sudden financial difficulty, but does not call residents out of the blue. Characteristics of the calls are: Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers to identify themselves.Scammers may know the last four digits of the taxpayer’s Social Security number.Scammers spoof caller ID to make the phone number appear as if the IRS or another local law enforcement agency is calling.Scammers may send bogus IRS emails to victims to support their bogus calls.Victims hear background noise of other calls to mimic a call site.After threatening victims with jail time or with driver’s license or other professional license revocation, scammers hang up. Others soon call back pretending to be from local law enforcement agencies or the Department of Motor Vehicles, and caller ID again supports their claim.The IRS will never: Call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer. Generally, the IRS will first mail a bill to any taxpayer who owes taxes.Threaten to immediately bring in local police or other law enforcement groups to have the taxpayer arrested for not paying.Demand that taxes be paid without giving taxpayers the opportunity to question or appeal the amount owed.Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.Call about an unexpected refund.For taxpayers who don’t owe taxes or don’t think they do:Please report IRS or Treasury-related fraudulent calls to phishing@irs.gov (Subject: IRS Phone Scam).Do not give out any information. The CDC announced on Thursday that cigarette smoking rates in the United States have reached recorded lows with just 13.7 percent of the adult population smoking cigarettes in 2018. The percentage of smokers is just one-third from the number of smokers from 50 years ago. The CDC said that 19.7 percent of American adults used tobacco products in 2018. Cigars are used by 3.9 percent of adults; e-cigarettes by 3.2 percent of adults; smokeless tobacco by 2.4 percent of adults; and pipes, water pipes, or hookahs by 1 percent. The CDC said nearly 18.8 percent of tobacco users use two or more products. “This marked decline in cigarette smoking is the achievement of a consistent and coordinated effort by the public health community and our many partners,” said CDC Director Robert R. Redfield, M.D. “Yet, our work is far from over. The health benefits of quitting smoking are significant, and we are committed to educating Americans about the steps they can take to become tobacco-free.”While overall tobacco use has declined, e-cigarette use is on the rise, especially among young adults.
