BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- China and Pakistan pledged to strengthen defense ties Thursday at a meeting between Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie and visiting Pakistani Chief of Army Staff Ashfaq Parvez Kayani."Cooperation between the Chinese and Pakistani armed forces is exemplary and has been fruitful," Liang, also a state councilor, said during the meeting at Diaoyutai Guest House Thursday morning.Liang said the two sides should make continuous efforts to conduct their cooperation programs well.He said China would join hands with Pakistan to bring military relations to a new high.Kayani said Pakistan values its defense and security cooperation with China, noting that the two countries have cooperated fruitfully in national defense industries in recent years.He added Pakistan would further strengthen exchange and cooperation with China.Kayani also met with Chinese State Councilor and Minister for Public Security Meng Jianzhu, top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo, and Vice Chairman of China's Central Military Commission Guo Boxiong later Thursday.During the meeting with Meng Jianzhu, the two sides discussed bilateral cooperation in law enforcement and security.Hailing results achieved in the two fields, Meng pointed out Pakistan's active efforts in cooperating with China, including in anti-terrorism. BEIJING, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- China kicked off a five-day military exercise in two provinces on Tuesday in which 12,000 military personnel and seven types of military aircraft are taking part.The military exercise, code-named "Vanguard-2010", was carried out simultaneously in seven cities across the provinces of Henan and Shandong at 8:21 a.m. Tuesday and featured simulated emergency evacuations and planning for combat.The drill, consisting of two phases from Tuesday to Saturday, will feature emergency evacuations, war planning, reconnaissance, early warning activities, ground-to-air attacks and evacuations of command posts during its first phase ending Thursday.Its second phase consists of testing Chinese air defense troops' ability in fighting air units in a "complicated electromagnetic environment."At 8:21 a.m. on Tuesday, air defense forces from the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and paramilitary forces in the seven cities including Qingdao, Jinan, Zhengzhou and Kaifeng began evacuation plans and successfully moved to designated areas, screens at the drill's commanding headquarter showed.By about 10:10, an air defense brigade from the PLA Jinan Military Command led by its commander, Zhao Geng, had already traveled 100 km and begun to formulate war plans.

CHONGQING, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Rain-triggered landslides in southwest China Monday blocked a river, creating a barrier lake in Chongqing Municipality and forcing the evacuation of more than 12,000 people, flood control authorities said.The landslide blocked the Luojiang River in Chengkou County early Monday, creating a dam holding 15 to 20 million cubic meters of water, said Xing Hua, a Chengkou Water Resources Bureau spokesman.As of 5 a.m. Monday, the barrier lake was five-square-kilometers in area and 18-meters deep, said Xing.Photo taken on July 19, 2010 shows the Ciqikou Town surrounded by flood water of the Jialingjiang River, southwest China's Chongqing Municipality. BEIJING, July 28 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday respectively sent condolence messages to their Pakistani counterparts after a deadly airplane crash that killed all the 152 people on board.In his message, Hu, on behalf of the Chinese government and the people and in his personal name, conveyed to Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari his profound condolences for the victims and sincere regards to the families of those killed in the worst plane crash ever in Pakistan.In a separate message, Premier Wen Jiabao extended to Pakistani Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani his condolences for the victims and offerred regards to the families of those killed.Earlier Wednesday, an Airbus 321 carrying 152 people crashed minutes before it was supposed to land in Islamabad, killing everyone onboard, including at least 20 women and seven children as well as two Americans and a Somalian.The Airblue flight carrying 146 passengers and six crew members left Karachi in the morning and lost contact with the control tower at the Islamabad airport shortly before the crash. The plane was on its way from Turkey to the Pakistani capital via Karachi.The plane, which was manufactured in 2000, was leased in January 2006 by Airblue, a private service based in Karachi, Pakistan's largest city, according to local media.Also Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi sent a condolence message to Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi for the deadly air crash and the serious casualties.
