The Scripps National Spelling Bee has released the 27 titles that are on its 2020-21 Great Words, Great Works booklist. The list of books is for students that span from first to eighth grade and will help students prep for their annual school spelling bee with a list of 450 words that are on the School Spelling Bee Study List each year."Parents and teachers are always looking (especially during the summer) for reading suggestions for kids," The Scripps National Spelling Bee said. "The Scripps National Spelling Bee recognizes the important connection between reading and spelling. Before our competitors were great spellers, they were great readers. With that in mind, the Bee team intentionally selected its school-level spelling study words from engaging, age-appropriate books. The Bee organized those titles into the Great Words, Great Works book list. This year, students can expand their vocabularies and their world views while hearing from a diverse cast of characters on topics such as climate change, homelessness, immigration, gender identity, and the power of dreaming. Messages of friendship, hope, and overcoming adversity connect all 27 books, creating bridges between different cultures and life experiences."Here is a sampling of this year's Great Words, Great Works list:Sulwe by Lupita Nyong’oThe Dog Who Lost His Bark by Eoin ColferAda Twist and the Perilous Pants by Andrea BeatyWhales on Stilts by M.T. The rise in telemedicine could lead to more problems for people who need to keep an eye on their heart health.A study published by JAMA showed televisits accounted for 35% of primary care cases from April to June. Office-based visits declined by half. The study found blood pressure tests also declined by 50% and cholesterol checks went down by 37%.A doctor with the American Heart Association says that could be the result of the uncertainty surrounding the start of the pandemic.“They were doing the COVID tests in the same place as normal labs, so people were hesitant to go, and when you think of cholesterol panel, its fasting, which means a lot of lab places were getting top heavy with people in the mornings,” said Dr. Reshmaal Gomes, a volunteer with the American Heart Association.Gomes says labs now separate COVID-19 tests from other lab work. She says home lab testing has become more efficient and many insurance companies now pay for it.She says telehealth has also proved to be important for those recovering from heart attacks and strokes.“They have shown that telehealth rehab after a stroke is working and working for patients who would not have been able to make those three or four visits to the physical therapist,” said Gomes.Gomes says people who had blood pressure and cholesterol checks done in between doctor visits reduced their likelihood of a heart related emergency by 50%. 1412

The U.S. Olympic Committee has announced Salt Lake City will be its choice in a bid for the Winter Games in 2030 or beyond."We won!" Governor Gary Herbert cheered, holding hands in victory with Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski, Council Chairwoman Erin Mendenhall and others."This has been the culmination of a significant team effort, starting with the support of the public," the governor added. The announcement came following a meeting by the U.S. Olympic Committee in San Francisco on Friday. Salt Lake City was competing with Denver for the nomination. The International Olympic Committee is expected to pick the next host cities for future Games in 2023.Salt Lake City has argued it is uniquely situated to host another Olympics. Our venues are still operating and in excellent condition and our infrastructure is in place with billions in expansions (light rail, a new airport, etc.). There is also significant support with polls showing 89% of Utahns in favor of another bid."We feel like we’re as prepared as we could be. We have unanimity with our public officials that have lined up behind this effort," said Jeff Robbins, the president of the Utah Sports Commission. The cost to host an Olympics would also be cheaper than other cities. It would cost about .4 billion, but boosters insist it would not cost any state or local tax dollars. Instead, it would be paid for in broadcast rights, sponsorships and ticket sales."People say, 'Well, is this worth the investment?' The investment is zero! Look at all we get. Number one, we get the spotlight of the world on Utah and we get to show the world what a great state this is, what great people are here. The volunteers were fantastic last time," said Fraser Bullock, an executive for Salt Lake's 2002 Winter Olympics and the co-chair of this Olympic Exploratory Committee.Utah estimates it received more than billion in economic benefit from the 2002 Winter Olympics. Mayor Biskupski said she envisioned the next Games that Utah could host would be even better. She said there would be an emphasis on sustainability (as in, environmentally friendly) and a modern Olympics."This will be an entirely new Games and experience. We're excited to bring that vision," she said. 2247

The Supreme Court granted Tuesday a Trump administration request to continue to bar most refugees under its travel ban.Without comment, the court blocked a federal appeals court ruling from last week that would have exempted refugees who have a contractual commitment from resettlement organizations from the travel ban while the justices consider its legality. The ruling could impact roughly 24,000 people. The travel ban bars certain people from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen from entering the US.The issue concerning the scope of the travel ban has been ricocheting through the courts since the spring when the Supreme Court allowed Trump's ban to go into effect except for those with a "bona fide" relationship to the United States. The order might give hope to supporters of the ban, but it may also simply reflect a desire on the part of the justices to maintain the status quo until the justices can hear the case next month."Although it may be tempting to see the order as a harbinger of how the court is likely to rule on the merits, it's better understood as a very modest procedural step to stabilize the full scope of the injunctions against the travel ban over the next four weeks," said Steve Vladeck, CNN Supreme Court analyst and professor of law at the University of Texas School of Law.The justices did not explain their reasoning, although it took five justices to make the decision. The court is expected to take up the legality of the travel ban October 10. 1500

The U.S. government is officially investigating Facebook. The Federal Trade Commission confirmed in a statement Monday that it is currently investigating Facebook data practices as the company faces new scrutiny from the Cambridge Analytica scandal."The FTC takes very seriously recent press reports raising substantial concerns about the privacy practices of Facebook," said Tom Pahl, acting director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection. "Today, the FTC is confirming that it has an open non-public investigation into these practices."News broke earlier this month that Cambridge Analytica, a data firm with ties to President Donald Trump's campaign, reportedly accessed information from about 50 million Facebook users without their knowledge.CNN reported last week that the FTC was sending a letter to Facebook with questions about how the social media company allowed the data to wind up in the hands of Trump campaign consultants.Facebook stock was down 4% in early trading Monday.Reps for Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment.  1077
