SARASOTA, Fla. — A Florida woman says she fell ill with COVID-19 and passed the coronavirus onto her 99-year-old mother who lives with her.Ruta Jouniari said she felt sick in October. She had a fever, cough and headache."I literally couldn't breathe. I tried to take a breath and the pain in my lungs was so incredible," she said.Jouniari was hospitalized at Sarasota Memorial Hospital for three days, but did not need oxygen."The nights were horrific, you have night sweats, shivering. You're achy. You can't breathe," she said.Her mother, who Jouniari is the primary caregiver of in her home, later tested positive for COVID-19.Jouniari said her mother never left the house, so she knows she brought the virus home, but she doesn't know where she contracted it.Her mother's age put her at a high risk of contracting the virus. Her mother, she added, suffered from a stroke about seven years ago."The guilt trip that goes with a child giving their parent COVID is not a fun reality of life," she said.Jouniari said her mother was hospitalized for 10 days. She was on a ventilator in an intensive care unit. Doctors treated her mother with plasma, remdesivir and dexamethasone."Going in, it's so frightening and you're so scared and you're scared for yourself when you're the patient, but you're even more scared knowing the statistics of a 99-year-old going in," said Jouniari.Jouniari said her mother left the hospital on Monday."For her to come out and come home today and she's in her own room, her own bed, breathing on two liters of oxygen. It's just amazing," she said.She urges everyone to take precautions and protect the vulnerable population."I hate to say this, but you could kill them. I was witness to that. I could have. My mom is a miracle of miracles. She's a statistic anomaly. She shouldn't have made it and she did," said Jouniari.She said she appreciates everyone who prayed for her mother. She said she is also thankful for the doctors and nurses who cared for her mother."I had over 800 people praying for her and it was incredible...the power of that was just amazing," Jouniari said. "For those families who are suffering, I hope they have solace and peace, just pray hard and have faith just know that people at 99 make it out. Scientists believe they have discovered a new species of whale in Mexico.The team was taking underwater video and audio samples of three beaked whales near Baja California. They work with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society near the San Benito Islands, about 300 miles from the U.S. border.They originally were looking for what animal was making an unidentified sound recorded in 2018 in the area.Experts in the field of beaked whales now say the scientists’ observations don’t match anything seen before, and they are “highly confident” the video shows an entirely new species, according to a press release.“We saw something new. SCOTTSDALE, Arizona — From pre-made salads and sandwiches to ready-to-make meal kits and online ordering, the grocery store has become a conveyor belt of innovation the last few years.It’s time to throw another piece into the basket — driverless delivery. Kroger, the Cincinnati, Ohio-based grocery chain that operates Fry’s Food Stores, announced Thursday, Aug. 16, that it will begin testing its driverless delivery program in Scottsdale, Arizona. In June, the company said it was exploring the program and had partnered with Nuro, a company founded in 2016 that makes unmanned vehicles, but had not named where they would be tested.Now we know where.Starting Thursday, the program will only be available to those living in the 85257 zip code and within two miles of the Fry’s grocery store at 7770 E. McDowell Road in Scottsdale (near Scottsdale and North Hayden Roads).Here are a few things you need to know:WHAT IS IT?Forget going to the grocery store and walking the aisles to grab the milk, eggs and cheese. Under the test program, customers will be able to order their groceries via the Fry's Food Store app and website and have them delivered to their home by one of Nuro’s ten unmanned Toyota Prius vehicles.Each vehicle will deliver the groceries to a home’s curbside and can deliver up to 15 bags of groceries, said Pam Giannonatti, corporate affairs manager with Kroger.HOW SAFE IS IT?“Safety is Nuro’s top priority. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The robotic car company created by Google is poised to attempt a major technological leap in California, where its vehicles will hit the roads without a human on hand to take control in emergencies.The regulatory approval announced Tuesday allows Waymo's driverless cars to cruise through California at speeds up to 65 miles per hour.The self-driving cars have traveled millions of miles on the state's roads since Waymo began as a secretive project within Google nearly a decade ago.
