SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Jewish leaders celebrated the second night of Hanukkah Monday, lighting the second candle of a massive Menorah outside City Hall.As the second night of the Jewish Festival of Lights got underway, Rabbi Zalman Carlebach said it was important for leaders to show their support and celebrate in light of recent anti-Semetic incidents around the U.S. "In light of the current events that are happening around the country, this world could use some more light. America could use some more light," said Rabbi Carlebach.San Diego has numerous Menorah lighting events planned as well as other celebrations throughout the county as Hanukkah continues — running through Dec. 10. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In a statement, the City of San Diego says it wasn't given enough time ahead of the July 4 weekend to close beach parking lots.Friday, California Office of Emergency Services sent a letter to city managers in the county asking them to close their beach parking lots ahead of the weekend. The letter was sent to officials in San Diego, Imperial Beach, Coronado, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Oceanside."At the time of writing, beaches under the jurisdiction of local governments within San Diego County are the only beaches without visitation restrictions throughout all of Southern California, and therefore are attracting thousands of residents from outside your coastal communities and creating significant potential for disease transmission, particularly in crowded restaurants, bars, retail, and hotels," the letter stated. "... To protect the public health of San Diegans and reduce the high potential transmission of this deadly disease in San Diego coastal businesses, we write to request that municipal governments do not open beach parking lots for the July 4th holiday weekend."RELATED: Crowds flock to San Diego beaches for Fourth of July weekendOceanside announced it would close beach parking lots on Thursday, while Carlsbad said late Friday that it would do the same. Surrounding counties Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, and Santa Barbara have closed beaches this weekend.City of San Diego Chief Operating Officer Kris Michell said in a statement to City News Service that San Diego wasn't given enough time to put a beach parking closure in place."The city of San Diego is closely following county guidance and working with health officials to encourage adherence to public health regulations," Michell said. How far are people willing to park and still walk to the beach? Are they going to Uber in? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In the late '80s Gary Cheatham founded Auntie Helen's in a one-car garage in North Park in 1988.Gary did fluff-and-fold laundry first for one, then for a handful of friends who were sick with AIDS."Everybody could do it. But nobody would do it. And I think that makes him a superhero in my eyes," says Auntie Helen's current Executive Director, Rod Legg.Fear and stigma at the time hurt the LGBT community as much as the disease, but word spread quickly about Gary's services, and Auntie Helen's grew. Sadly, so did the disease.HIV and AIDS claimed more than 100,000 lives in the U.S. in the 1980s. Many of Gary's clients and friends who died willed their estates to Auntie Helen's.Their belongings accumulated in Gary's garage, which was also where he did laundry. Eventually, with help from a few high-powered friends and other activists, Gary opened Auntie Helen's thrift store in 1989.The laundry service and the thrift store are still located in North Park."We also do COVID-19 [laundry], which is our frontline medical workers. That's a tie in to the past, we had to do that. We had to offer that," Legg says.They're expanding the store, and their outreach, giving out free groceries to their regular clients (about 25-35 individuals) and now also to frontline workers.With COVID-19 leaving so many more people on hard times, they started delivering groceries — no questions asked, no referral needed. At one point, to more than 300 people.Legg explains, "this is everybody's HIV in a sense... We don't know where we're at. We're all wondering what's going to happen the next day, but most importantly is neighbor to neighbor we need to make sure we're taking care of each other."All in keeping with the legacy of Gary Cheatham, about whom, Legg says, "this man was way before his time... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Lifeguards are working to rescue a man stuck on a rock near Border Field State Park Monday afternoon. Lifeguards say they received a call from Border Patrol before noon Monday about a man stuck in the middle of an estuary bear the park. San Diego and Imperial Beach lifeguards as well as the Coastguard is helping with the rescue. The man was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. 421

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Inside an MCAS Miramar courtroom Thursday, the military held a preliminary hearing for a Navy corpsman who's charged in connection with the death of a fellow Navy corpsman, HM3 Michael Vincent De Leon. A corpsman is a type of medic.ABC 10News' cameras were not allowed inside, where accused corpsman HM1 Ryan Dini appeared in his military fatigues alongside his private counsel."A cover-up is what I felt [happened] from the get-go," Jose De Leon told ABC 10News just after the hearing. He has suspected a possible cover-up since his 30-year-old son died on the Twentynine Palms military base last year.At Thursday's hearing, the prosecution argued that HM1 Dini should face additional charges related to negligence. He's already charged in part with dereliction of duty resulting in death and drunk and disorderly conduct. HM1 Dini has 19 years of service with the military.The prosecution stated that HM1 Dini and a handful of others service members including Michael were at a house party on-base where alcohol was flowing, and guns were being dry-fired the night of the death.HM1 Dini's defense denied any wrongdoing."[HM1 Dini] being the most senior individual at this going-away party failed to protect not just Michael but everyone there because they were in danger when these firearms came out," said Jose De Leon. He told us in September, "We know that the firearm was dry-fired at Michael. The firearm was put away and it came out again and according to some statements they were horsing around, and the firearm came out again and that's when Michael was killed."He said that the shooting was first called in as a suicide but ABC 10News then learned from a source with close military ties that the death was being investigated as a homicide.A prosecutor named three other service members in the hearing. Their involvement remains unknown.The prosecution told ABC 10News that in about three weeks a judge will determine whether HM1 Dini's charges will be sustained and whether he'll face additional charges.Naval Criminal Investigative Service wrote to ABC 10News on Thursday that the investigation is still open. 2149
