Andy Parker, whose daughter Alison was killed on live television during a news report two years ago, said Thursday he was considering running for the seat of retiring Virginia Rep. Bob Goodlatte.Parker has been an outspoken critic of Goodlatte, the powerful chairman of the House judiciary committee, for his longstanding ties with the National Rifle Association. Parker's daughter lived in Goodlatte's district, and the father has pushed for gun control ever since she was killed.Parker said he's been talking with his family about the possibility of running for the seat as a Democrat. Parker lives outside the district, and if he were to run and win, his family would have to move."I've got some time to ponder it," Parker said.Parker said he was at the dentist's office Thursday morning when his daughter's boyfriend, Chris Hurst, texted him with the news about Goodlatte's retirement. Hurst on Tuesday won a seat in the Virginia statehouse."I feel like the dog chasing the car and finally caught it," Parker said of Goodlatte not seeking re-election. "I'm just glad to see the guy is finally going to get out of office."Parker said he joked with his wife, Barbara, that she should run, but she immediately ruled out that possibility. The father has been an outspoken advocate for his daughter, who was shot to death during a live broadcast in August 2015. The man who killed Alison had a turbulent work history that wasn't known to staff at her Roanoke, Virginia, TV station when he was first hired there.Goodlatte has been in office since 1993, winning by huge margins throughout his career. He holds an "A" grade from the NRA for his longstanding support of gun rights.Parker had pressed Goodlatte to hold a hearing on legislation to reduce gun violence in the months after Alison was killed. He called out the congressman on TV and in op-eds for being in the "pocket of the NRA.""It's good for the country that he's leaving office," Parker said. 1965

ANAHEIM (CNS) - Disney officials informed Anaheim Wednesday that they have canceled plans for a 700-room luxury hotel at Disneyland Resort in light of the city's decision to scrub tax-incentive deals for the project. The Anaheim City Council voted Aug. 28 to cancel the tax-incentive deals because the project had changed over time, including a new location. Council members also said they were concerned the new location would shutter businesses, costing jobs.Disney officials at the time denied making substantive changes to the project, and said the location shift was minor and still in the same general area.RELATED: Disney puts hotel construction at Downtown Disney in Anaheim on holdDisney spokeswoman Lisa Haines told the Los Angeles Times that while the cancellation of the project "is disappointing for many, the conditions and agreements that stimulated this investment in Anaheim no longer exist and we must therefore adjust our long-term investment strategy."The tax deals were originally meant to spur Disney to build the luxury hotel at the resort and spend millions to expand the company's two theme parks. Construction was scheduled to start this summer, but it was put on hold over details on the development. The hotel was expected to open in 2021 and be the company's fourth at the Disneyland Resort.RELATED: Disneyland agrees to pay its workers an hour"I can't imagine a better piece of property for a hotel in the entire country," Mayor Tom Tait said Wednesday. "And Disney should be able to do it with their own money and not ours."Tait added, "If a hotel doesn't make sense, maybe they've got something better in mind, or even more profitable."Tait said state law prevented the city from providing tax subsidies for the project after Disney moved it from a parking lot to another location within Downtown Disney.RELATED: Take a virtual walk through Disney Parks with new 360-degree panoramas on Google Street View"They got the agreement passed with the old council and state law requires a jobs analysis before giving money from a city, and that jobs analysis then was starting at zero because it was going to be on a parking lot and now they've moved it," Tait said. The more recent project would "take out 130,000 square feet of retail space and 450 jobs," Tait said."And you can imagine if those 450 people knew about this when they asked for that agreement they would all show up at City Hall demanding why would we be giving incentives to take their job away," Tait said.RELATED: Several Downtown Disney businesses to close for 700-room hotelAt Tuesday night's council meeting, the city attorney announced that Anaheim had determined that Measure L, which seeks to raise the minimum wage in the city to per hour for workers at projects subsidized by tax breaks, did not apply to Disneyland because it no longer had the incentive agreements with the city.Measure L was drafted to target Disneyland Resort, but the company has since come to an agreement to raise wages for most of its employees. 3050

Apple iPhone fans love the edge-to-edge glass of the new X models. But some phone testers claim the new iPhone XS and larger XS Max are easier to break if they are dropped.  A new test from the electronics insurance company SquareTrade is raising questions about that glass and the durability of the new phones. In SquareTrade's drop from 6 feet, (which the insurance company claims simulate the height it would fall from if it slipped while you were talking) the XS screen shattered, resulting in loose and separated glass.A tumble test resulted in hairline cracks and scratches.SquareTrade calls the iPhone XS "high risk" for breakage, much higher than the older iPhone 7's and 8's, which did not have edge-to-edge glass.Others question SquareTrade resultsHowever, other reviewers say these tests may not be that realistic for most people.Apple says the new XS has "the most durable glass ever built into a smartphone."Other testers say unless you are in the NBA, most people don't drop their phones from a 6 foot height. They tend to drop them 3 feet, from pocket or purse level, such as when you are rummaging for keys. The tech review site CNET conducted its own tests, and says the phones sustained no damage from a 3-foot level onto a sidewalk.Panicking over this may be a case of "doesn't that stink."CNET says the new phones should be fine if they're inside a case and dropped from your pocket or tabletop. Bottom line: Buy a good case for any new phone, one that is rated for drop protection and is not just decorative. That way it stays safe and you don't waste your money._______________"Don't Waste Your Money" is a registered trademark of Scripps Media, Inc. Around ten people are still missing after the blaze broke out on Sunday afternoon, when the mall was packed with shoppers and cinema goers. Ten others are in hospital, Vladimir Puchkov, the head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations told journalists Monday.Preliminary investigations point to the fire having broken out in the cinema hall area of the four-story Winter Cherry shopping mall in the center of Kemerovo.Early images from the scene showed thick black smoke pouring from the shopping center, a former sweet factory, as firefighters continued to battle the flames after dark. The shopping mall, which has an overall area of 23,000 square meters, opened in 2013. It has a parking lot for 250 cars, shops, a bowling, a children's center, a cinema, and a petting zoo, according to TASS.Earlier Petrenko said four people had been detained and questioned in relation to the fire according to Tass. Among those detained include "the tenant of the premises where the epicenter of the fire allegedly was," Petrenko said.Sputnik, the semi-official newspaper reported the head of the city's fire department Sergei Yakovlev as saying the blaze had spread via flammable thermal insulation, making it difficult to put out.It is not yet known how the inferno began.People were gathering at the scene Monday morning to lay flowers and toys, Sputnik reported.Russian officials say 20 psychologists are working with relatives of missing people.  1452

An executive action President Trump issued Saturday on the deferral of payroll taxes could put more money in your pocket soon. Much is still unknown about how the order will be implemented, but experts say to keep a few things in mind before making plans for that extra cash.1. It’s temporaryMany employees have a 6.2% Social Security tax withheld from their paychecks and remitted to the IRS on their behalf by their employer. “The executive order defers the withholding, deposit and payment of the tax,” says Matthew Keefer, a certified public accountant at Gorfine, Schiller & Gardyn in Owings Mills, Maryland. The deferral period runs from Sept. 1 through Dec. 31.2. You may not qualifyThe deferral is available only to employees whose pretax wages or compensation is generally less than ,000 biweekly, which works out to around 0,000 a year. And currently it doesn’t apply to people who are self-employed, notes Pete Isberg, vice president of government relations at human resources services firm ADP.3. The taxes are due eventually“This is a deferral of taxes, not a forgiveness of taxes,” says Michael Graetz, a tax law professor at Columbia University Law School in New York. “So at the end of the deferral period, all of those taxes will be owed unless Congress changes the law to say that they’re forgiven.”4. Consider setting the extra money aside for nowIf your employer stops withholding and you see a boost in your pay because of it, you might want to hang on to that cash for now, Keefer says. “Unless legislation is passed, the deferred tax from the executive order will be repaid in the future,” he says. Another option, Isberg adds, is to tell your employer to withhold additional money by filling out a new form W-4 at work.Of course, not all households can afford to set money aside these days. Still, if you need the money from this tax deferral now, don’t lose sight of the fact it could mean a tax bill later.5. Some employers may just keep withholding the tax anywayIt can take time for employers to revamp payroll systems, especially if they’re not using a payroll processing company, according to Isberg. Also, employers can be liable for employment taxes, even if they don’t withhold them, he says. “Employers know that, and they’re going to realize that, ‘Look, if I do this, could the IRS come back to me in January and just assess the full amount that should have been withheld?’ Well, technically they can,” Isberg explains. Most employers won’t want to ask their employees to repay four months of taxes, Graetz adds. “This turns out to be a very complicated problem,” he says.More From NerdWalletSome Taxpayers Face a Desperate Wait for IRS RefundsHow to Work Around Delays in Major IRS FunctionsIRS Data: Refunds Lag as Agency, Tax Filers Slow DownTina Orem is a writer at NerdWallet.
