As many former college students are getting a reprieve from paying federal student loans, some Democratic leaders are calling on the next president to suspend payments permanently.On Thursday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called on forgiving federal student loans for those owing less than ,000. Schumer is proposing a resolution to outline how the president should forgive student debt.The resolution would not be applicable to private student loans.In a statement, Schumer said, “For far too long the sunny, American optimism of our young people has been clouded by crippling student debt. Education is supposed to be a ladder up, but studies have shown that student loans hold people back and prevent young college graduates from owning homes or starting small businesses. Facing questions from Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Scott-Clayton said that the impact of student loan debt is particularly crippling to minorities.“It's really shockingly bad,” Scott-Clayton told the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. “Even prior to the pandemic, nearly half of Black student loan borrowers would experience a student loan default within 12 years of college entry. That's-- compared to about a third of Hispanic borrowers and one in five white student borrowers. It's so bad that a Black college graduate with a bachelor's degree is more likely to experience a default than a white college dropout. AN DIEGO (CNS) - A 25-year-old man staying at a hotel in the Core-Columbia area was robbed at gunpoint by two men, who forced their way into his room this morning.The man was staying at the Comfort Inn Hotel at 664 G St. when two men wearing black shirts forced their way into his room at 2:20 a.m, according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.The victim was tied up and the suspects ransacked his room, then left, Heims said.A description of the suspects was not available. An Akron, Ohio man will spend at least the next 20 years in prison for selling fentanyl to a woman who overdosed on the drug and died nearly three years ago.Jurmaine A. Jeffries, 29, was convicted of distribution of fentanyl and possession with intent to distribute the drug.A jury found that the fentanyl Jeffries sold the woman resulted in her death.On Sept. 16, 2015, the day of her death, the woman texted and called Jeffries to ask about buying heroin. He responded to her messages and told her "B right there."Cell phone records placed Jeffries in the area near the woman's house on the day she died, authorities said.According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, after the woman died, police used her phone to text Jeffries about buying more drugs. Police arrested him when he showed up at the woman's house with fentanyl on his person.Sentencing will take place at a later date, but Jeffries is facing a mandatory minimum of two decades in prison for his charges.“We will prosecute those who sell fentanyl and other drugs that kill our friends and neighbors,” U.S. Attorney Justin E. Herdman said. “This defendant drove around Akron delivering poison for profit. ANAHEIM (CNS) - A man working in a trench at Disneyland in Anaheim suffered fatal injuries Thursday when a steel plate fell on him. Paramedics were called to the park about 3:20 a.m., a Metro Net Fire dispatcher said. Javier Jimenez, a 37-year-old West Covina resident, was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital, according to Carrie Braun, a spokeswoman for the Orange County Coroner's Office. Jimenez was working for a contractor installing piping for a heating and air conditioning system outside of the theme park on Disneyland property, according to Anaheim police Sgt. Daron Wyatt. Wyatt said a crane carrying a large pipe accidentally struck a cross beam, which knocked over a large metal plate shoring up a wall. He said the metal plate knocked over the worker, who was in an 8- to 10-foot-deep trench. ``We are saddened by this tragic accident involving a contractor and on behalf of Disneyland Resort extend our deepest sympathies to Mr. Jimenez's family, friends and co-workers,'' said Liz Jaeger, a Disneyland Resort spokeswoman. 1065
