LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGT) - An historic hiking trail in La Jolla will reopen after a 30-year battle with homeowners.The Princess Street trail goes from the top of the cliff at Princess Street to the water near La Jolla Shores. For years, access to the path had been closed because of a dispute over who owned the land leading to the trail.A homeowner claimed it was on their property and put up a gate blocking access to the trail. Over the years, brush and vegetation had overgrown the trail, making it impossible to hike on.In 2012, the Coastal Commission ruled that the gate was on public land and must be reopened.Now, the Environmental Center of San Diego is overseeing the revitalization and eventual reopening of the trail."Access to the coast is the one public right that we can hold," says Pam Heatherington with the Environmental Center. "We want to get kids out into the natural world. If this is a small part of that, we're up for it."People who live along Princess Street are split on their feelings about the trail. Melinda Merryweather says she remembers using it in the 1960s and wants her grandkids to enjoy it as well. She's been fighting for it to reopen for 23 years."It was a terrible injustice," she says of the gate that blocked access. "It's just so heart-filling to now see this as a reality.""I've been on record that I don't like it," says Dave Reynolds. He and his family have lived in a house next to the trail for four generations. He thinks reopening it will bring a litany of problems to the neighborhood."Safety, possible illegal activity, increased traffic, trash," he says of the issues he foresees. "But it is what it is. We're not happy about it, but there's nothing we can do about it."Supporters say it won't draw crowds, as it goes to an area only popular with divers and local surfers. They say people who want a traditional beach experience will still go to La Jolla Shores nearby.They also say having the trail will allow for easier rescues when people get trapped by the rising tides along the cove.The Environmental Center is now using a ,000 grant to clear the brush on the trail to within 6 inches of the ground. That will allow for a topographical survey, then a design team will create a new path down to the coast.After that, they hope to have the new trail built and open by the end of 2020. 2350

KEARNY MESA (CNS) - Four men were wanted for robbing a convenience store in Kearny Mesa Sunday, police said.A clerk at the Circle K on Balboa Avenue just east of Interstate 805 was working by herself around 8:45 a.m. Sunday when four men came into the store, looked around and left without making a purchase, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.The four returned about eight minutes later, and one of them pointed a knife at the clerk's abdomen and demanded cigarettes, Heims said. The woman complied, and the men took multiple packs of cigarettes and cigars. JACKSONVILLE, Florida — Water releases to Lake Okeechobee will be adjusted beginning today, Aug. 24. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says releases will achieve a 14-day average of 2,000 cubic feet per second from Moore Haven Lock and Dam and 1,500 cubic feet per second from St. Lucie Lock and Dam. "With continued paramount focus on Herbert Hoover Dike safety throughout 2018, we need to make increased discharges to slow the still dangerous rise in lake levels," said Jacksonville District Commander, Col. Jason Kirk. "In concert with the South Florida Water Management District, we continue to maximize storage nor and south of the lake to minimize the requirement for discharges." The lake stage was 14.57 feet as of Thursday. Under these current conditions, discharges up to 4,000 cubic feet per second are allowed to be released to the Caloosahatchee and up to 1,800 cubic feet per second to the St. Lucie. Crews will use flexibility when it comes raising flows, while they still work to reduce risk to the Herbert Hoover Dike. The St. Lucie average flow will increase by 330 cubic feet per second from current releases, although runoff water from rain in the St. Lucie basin could occasionally result in flows that exceed the target amount of 1,500 cubic feet per second. Staff with the Jacksonville District will continue to monitor conditions and will make adjustments to water flows as needed.  1458

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The House Special Investigative Committee on Oversight released its report Wednesday on allegations against Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens. Click here to read the full report The committee was formed after Greitens was indicted on a felony invasion of privacy charge. Court documents allege Greitens took a nude photograph of a woman he was having an affair with in 2015 and then transmitted the photo so it could be seen on a computer.In a news conference Wednesday after the release of the report, Missouri Speaker of the House Todd Richardson told reporters that the committee investigating Greitens plans to expand its mission and make a recommendation on whether the house should pursue impeachment.The report details testimony the woman at the heart of the invasion of privacy charge provided to the committee.In the testimony, the woman told the committee she and Greitens first met in 2013 at her hair salon, but it wasn’t until March 2015 where the relationship turned romantic.The woman, who said she had “somewhat of a crush” on Greitens, said that on a March 7, 2015, appointment, Greitens moved his hand up her leg and “all the way up to her crotch.” The woman told the committee she did not give her consent.Nearly two weeks later on March 21, a Saturday, the woman went to Greitens’s home at 7 a.m.“It was like he was on a mission, sort of, like this kind of high energy – it was kind of high energy,” the woman told the committee. “And he said, ‘Will you let me take you through an exercise – like, through a workout? I just have this idea. It’s going to make you feel so good.’”The woman said that she hoped to learn more about his feelings toward her.Greitens then allegedly had the woman change into a man’s T-shirt and men’s pajama pants and told her that he would show her how to do a proper pull-up.The woman told the committee that she figured it was going to be a “sexy workout.”Upon entering the basement, the woman testified that Greitens taped her hands to pull-up rings with “this gauzed tape stuff” and then put a blindfold on her. After an exchange, the woman said Greitens tore her shirt apart, exposing her, and then pulled down her pants, both without her consent.At that point, the woman told investigators, “Then I hear him kind of, like, step back – take a step back and I hear – I can hear like a, like a cell phone – like a picture, and I can see a flash through the blindfold.”The report includes a reference to a filing made by Greitens’s defense attorneys on April 9, 2018, pointing out in testimony that she had never seen the governor with the phone.When asked by an assistant circuit attorney during the April testimony, the woman provided the following account:“I haven’t talked about it because I don’t know if it’s because I’m remembering it through a dream or I – I’m not sure, but yes, I feel like I saw it after that happened, but I haven’t spoken about it because of that.”In returning to the committee’s interview with the woman, the report said the woman said Greitens then threatened her:“You’re not going to mention my name. Don’t even mention my name to anybody at all, because if you do, I’m going to take these pictures, and I’m going to put them everywhere I can. They are going to be everywhere, and then everyone will know what a little w**** you are.”The woman said she then told Greitens she wanted to be untied and he helped her remove the tape. She eventually left his home and returned to work. She did have to return later because she forgot her keys.She claims she confronted Greitens about the photo and he claimed he felt bad about taking it so he deleted it but the woman said she didn’t believe him. The woman then describes several other encounters with Greitens over the next few months, including two where he slapped her. In one incident in June 2015, the woman said Greitens struck her in the face after she admitted to sleeping with her husband. She said it didn’t feel like he was trying to intentionally hurt her but that he was trying to “claim” her.She also describes another incident where she agreed to meet Greitens in a parking lot to talk. She claims Greitens had informed her that someone emailed his wife about their affair. He then allegedly created a story to explain her presence in his neighborhood during their encounters. At this point, she said she told Greitens she didn’t want to see him again.She said Greitens did later return to her workplace in October 2015 and assured her that his wife “doesn’t think anything.” The woman said she emailed Greitens that night and said “Please think of everyone involved and just leave me alone. Don’t come in at all.” She said she never saw him again after that.The report states that Greitens declined to testify but said through counsel that he would be willing to testify at the conclusion of the criminal trial. Kingsley, Iowa is home to 1,400 people. “Everybody knows everybody,” said resident Chet Davis.Davis owns the town’s single grocery store: Chet’s Foods. The store has been operating for decades, and Davis’ family has owned it for more than 40 years.Generations of the community have come through these doors, but now, Davis is worried this neighborhood staple may have an expiration date.“Whether we can make it the rest of the year, I don’t know,” said the father of four and grandfather of eight.Davis said his store’s sales took a big hit when a new neighbor moved in just a few blocks away. “This year, we had a Dollar General open up in Kingsley,” he said. After the discount store opened, Davis said his profits dropped by about 20-percent.“It’s disheartening,” said Davis. “You just do what you can, and that’s all you can do, so you just gotta kind of accept it. But you don’t want to; you want to fight it.”The loss in income is something he can’t afford for long. “It costs us ,000 a month just in electricity,” said Davis, as he pointed at the cold storage inside his store that’s necessary to keep frozen products, meats and produce fresh.But Davis has a bigger worry: the loss his entire town is about to see.“If we lose our store here in town, if you want a head of lettuce, you’ll have to drive 25, 30 miles. They always talk about a food desert, and that’s what we’ll have here if we end up having to close the store like we did the other one,” said Davis, referring to his second grocery store just a few miles away.What used to be a space packed with fresh produce is now empty, collecting dust. Davis and his family were forced to close just over one year after Dollar General opened right next door.“They came in and took about 30 percent of our business right off the top.
