(KGTV) - Chula Vista police are now investigating multiple fires that broke out in over the span of a few days in the early hours of the morning.Captain Linda D’Orsi, Public Information Officer for the Chula Vista Fire Department, said they started early in the morning Sept. 17 and most have been fences and vegetation that burned. That Thursday morning, crews responded to multiple fires that started in the span of about half an hour, starting on Lake Crest Dr. & Wueste Rd, moving to 1120 Eastlake Parkway, then Telegraph Canyon Rd and Buena Vista Way and finally E. J St and Paseo Ladera.Just about two days later, crews then responded to a fire at the playground at Veteran’s Park. Karina Lodin lives across the street. She said she woke up to see the flames, then she called 911 and her husband took a video of the blaze.“For a second there, with everything that’s going on in California with all the wildfires, and you see this big fire outside your house, you start panicking like is my house going to catch up on fire,” said Lodin.She was disheartened to see the play structure flattened because it was a spot her son loved to play.Just one day after that, another fire nearby on Martin Place, also in the early hours of the morning.“As of this latest one, we have now requested our PD liaison because there seems to be a trend and we want to get to the bottom of this,” said Captain D’Orsi.Captain D’Orsi said they have not found anything left behind at each scene and have not found any witnesses with information on people in the area.“No obvious evidence left at the scene, no matches no flares,” she said.She added that anyone with information is asked to call the Chula Vista Police Department non emergency line at 619-691-5151.“We just want the community to be aware and be willing to provide information if they have any,” said Captain D’Orsi. 1894

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Experts at the Living Coast Discovery Center are keeping a close watch on their animals after a student jumped into a shark enclosure on Tuesday. The video featured a Montgomery High School student climbing on rocks before jumping in the enclosure and swimming a lap. LCDC officials believe the student took part in the stunt on a dare. The boy was not in any danger from the sharks, which were primarily sharks that don't like to be spooked, experts said. "They don't like to be scared by all those quick motions and loud noises," said Elizabeth Argyle, the director of education and guest experience for the center. "You don't know the consequences that you're going to create, and for the animals, they get spooked by it." None of the animals were harmed. The center's care staff said their animals are doing well and a veterinarian performs check-ups weekly. The student’s actions took place weeks before the center is set to open a new display. The exhibit, called the "Sea of Change" will be about co-existing with and respecting animals, focusing on how humans can live with them harmoniously, said Argyle. "We're very deeply disappointed in the actions that some of these students chose to do," Argyle added. She hopes this incident will serve as a teachable moment for others. The Sweetwater Union High School District said the teen’s behavior was inappropriate. School officials are working with LCDC to prevent similar incidents from happening again and create an opportunity for appropriate restitution for the student. 1568

CINCINNATI — Cincinnati police, who were told a car was stolen with an infant still inside, now say that a child was never in danger and that the person who reported the car stolen lied to get a quicker response from police.Just before 10 p.m. Thursday evening, a 2010 Mercury Milan was reported stolen from a BP gas station in the 1300 block of Hopple Street with a 10-month-old infant still inside.Police caught up with two suspects in the car shortly before 11 p.m., and the suspects fled the vehicle about five miles away from where it was reported stolen.Officers did not find a child inside the vehicle, and the suspects evaded capture, police said.Cincinnati police said the person who reported the car stolen changed his story about 45 minutes into their investigation, saying the infant was not in the car when it was stolen."He stated that there's some money in the car, and that's why he told us there was a 10-month-old in the car, because he knew it would be a top priority for us if this was the case," Cincinnati Police Capt. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- The Chula Vista Police Department is working to determine what caused a suspect to die more than 12-hours after he was taken into custody following a violent confrontation with officers.Jason Allen Watts, 29, of Spring Valley, was taken into custody Friday just before midnight after two people inside the 7-11 store at 403 Third Avenue reported him to appear under the influence of a substance and was refusing to leave. CVPD Capt. Phil Collum said Watts also called police to report that unknown persons were outside the store and were threatening to shoot him.Arriving officers encountered Watts inside the store but he ran behind the clerk’s counter and failed to comply with officer’s repeated orders, according to Collum."Officers spent time talking to Watts, trying to deescalate the situation to calm him and gain his compliance," Collum said. "As officers were talking to Watts, he punched a cash register on the counter and lifted it as though preparing to throw it at the officers."Collum said officers tried to take Watts into custody using less-lethal tools, including taser and pepper spray.Watts was eventually arrested but paramedics where called to the scene to evaluate him after he "continued to violently resist the officers," Collum said.The suspected was transported by ambulance to Paradise Valley Hospital for treatment where he was deemed suitable for incarceration by medical staff."While being booked into the San Diego County Central Detention Facility, further evaluations indicated Watts may need additional medical treatment," Collum said.Watts was subsequently transported by ambulance to UCSD Medical Center. "Once at UCSD, Watts began suffering medical complications and underwent treatment by medical staff," Collum said.  Watts was pronounced dead at 12:21 p.m. Saturday afternoon.The Chula Vista Police Department’s Crimes of Violence unit is investigating.  The cause of the death is unknown at this time. 2093
