Prior to joining Virgin Hyperloop One, Dr. Sengupta spent most of her career at NASA and was a member of the team that helped land a rover on Mars.“I spent most of my career working at NASA. I'm used to working with vacuum chambers; I'm used to working with electromagnetic propulsion systems," says Dr. Sengupta.Working on hyperloop reminds her of working on spacecraft, traveling hundreds of miles per hour through a vacuum tube in a magnetically levitating pod. Each pod is designed to fit 9 to 12 people. She believes it will remind passengers of a plane, but better."You don't have the traditional experiences you have in aircraft,” she explains. “There's no such thing as turbulence, right, because you actually have no air around you on the outside of the pod, so the ride is actually going to be a lot smoother. You're not even going to be able to tell that you're going that fast."Their last speed test reached 240 miles per hour, only limited, she says, by the length of the track. At full speed, they want to see pods travel about 700 miles per hour."Faster than a commercial airplane," says Dr. Sengupta.Hyperloop One hopes to have tracks operating within the next two to three years."I think it’s fair to say by 2023, we could have an operational hyperloop," she says.Right now, the company is working on feasibility studies in several states, to see where they could build their first routes."This would be a service that everyday people can use,” says Dr. Sengupta. “Otherwise, it doesn't make sense to build it. "Hyperloop One isn’t the only company working to make the hyperloop concept a reality. Musk and SpaceX have been explicit that the concept be open-sourced, encouraging others to develop the transportation. The tech mogul, as well as another company called Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, are in the race and working on their own hyperloop plans.So, how much will this cost? Who will pay for it?  Virgin Hyperloop One anticipates a public-private partnership."When it comes to infrastructure projects, you need to have a strong coalition of government, business community, and local community," says Dr. Sengupta.In the meantime, she and her team will keep working."This is high time to come up with a new mode of mass transportation, she says."We are reinventing transportation and doing it out here in the desert."Earlier this month, the company announced plans to build a 0 million research center in Bobadilla, a tiny village in southern Spain. It will be the Los Angeles-based company’s first off-site location in Europe.The site is slated to open in 2020 and will be used to test, develop and certify components to improve safety and reliability of their systems. If it's been a while since you've booked a flight, travel insurance is that thing that pops up at the end of a sale.“At the end, they’re going to say, ‘Hey, this many people bought travel insurance, don’t you want to buy travel insurance too?’ And I think a lot of people generally, before COVID, would think, ‘Oh they’re trying to upset me and move along,’” said Michael Parrish DuDell, chief strategy officer for Couponfollow.com. “But what we’re seeing, in fact, is that more and more people are saying, ‘I want that insurance I want to protect my future travel.’"Couponfollow.com was designed, DuDell said, to save consumers both time and money. He says the company is always asking consumers about their money and how they spend it.“As we looked closer at how people are traveling, where they were spending their money, where they were allocating their time, we found these little niche interesting areas,” DuDell said.He says those areas include things like travel insurance.“What we found is that 75% of people who had already booked flights had purchased trip insurance. That was a staggering number that is a 55% increase than what is thought of as the norm,” DuDell said.So, why the increase? Travel anxiety amid the pandemic is likely a big part of it.“There is so much uncertainty in the world right now, and of course that’s around the pandemic, but there’s other kinds of uncertainty too and I think people feel like they’re taking a strong risk in general when they’re traveling,” DuDell said. "So if they can mitigate risk in other areas, they’re willing to do that, to spend the money behind it.”Leslie Tayne, a financial attorney, author and frequent flier said, “There are a lot of caveats to whether travel insurance for airline purposes makes sense right now and frankly because the airlines allow you to make changes without a cost and last minute, there’s really almost no reason why you would get travel insurance.”She says these days, airlines are more accommodating than ever. And because there's been so much industry disruption surrounding travel, the future is being rewritten now.“I definitely believe they’re going to rewrite the travel insurance, they’re being investigated right now,” Tayne said. “It's being taken up in Congress in terms of the validity of the travel insurance and there’s some concern that travel insurance might be what’s termed either a ‘scam’ or a ‘money-making proposition’ that’s not really beneficial to the consumer.”In March, the House Oversight and Reform Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy launched an investigation into whether travel insurance provided any “meaningful protection” for consumers. The investigation was spurred amid the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, when many travelers were canceling trips as states began implementing stay-at-home orders.“The evidence shows consumers are purchasing standard travel insurance products, thinking they will be covered if they cancel their trip because of coronavirus,” Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), the subcommittee’s chair, said in March. “Yet, companies like Allianz, Travel Guard, and Generali are refusing to cover those claims. In the process they are encouraging dangerous travel.”So, when it comes to whether you "need" that insurance, Tayne says weigh your risks, consider where you're going and what you'll be doing.“My recommendation is to try to understand what the restrictions are and what you could use the insurance for when would it apply to you,” Tayne said.Tayne said if you're in a situation where it makes sense, don't make an insurance decision on emotion. (KGTV) - An Imperial Beach man said he was sucker punched during a peaceful protest in Imperial Beach on Sunday.Marcus Boyd was one of the people at the rally, which started at Veteran's Park. The attack happened when the group got to the beach, Boyd said."We were shouted at by three or four individuals, telling us to go home," Boyd said. "They decided to start throwing eggs at us. I crossed the street just to get a good image of the perpetrators."That's when Boyd said he was hit from behind. He still has a sore neck and headache. He said emotionally, it has been hard to watch the video. "He really tried to hurt me," Boyd said. Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina tweeted that he's called on the San Diego Sheriff's Department to "investigate the violent assault on peaceful protestors" that occurred at the Imperial Beach Pier Plaza on Sunday afternoon. Mayor Pro Tem Paloma Aguirre added that she does not want residents to feel unsafe "for exercising their First Amendment rights."According to a Sheriff's spokesman, the incident occurred at about 3 p.m. on Sunday. The protester reported that he had been punched by another man after a verbal confrontation. The suspect ran away with two men, but deputies later made contact with the two individuals, SDSO added.SDSO said the suspect was eventually contacted, but could not be identified by the victim or other witnesses. IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) -- The city of Imperial Beach voted to create a committee to take a look at their contract with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and the department’s use of force policies. During a city council meeting Wednesday night, the council also passed a Black Lives Matter proclamation.The committee will be tasked with looking to see if there are any necessary changes that should or could potentially be made when it comes to spending, looking at the possibility of redirecting funds to other community services. The council agreed that this committee should also make sure the sheriff’s department can still ensure public safety.The vote also came with the condition that the city will hire a consultant to advise them and help with the review.The council agreed to come back with their findings and any recommended changes in 90 days. 877
