SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- There are increasing calls for more police oversight. In San Diego, a proposed measure would create a new independent body to investigate alleged misconduct. Both San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and District Attorney Summer Stephan have pledged support for a new body to hold police accountable.Maresa Talbert with San Diegans for Justice said they welcome the support, but there is still some skepticism.“It seems very reactionary after all of this pressure that now they come out and support. This ballot measure is not a new thing. This has been proposed since 2012,” Talbert said.There is currently a Citizens Review Board on Police Practices, but Talbert said it is far from independent. “Their legal council is the city attorney, who represents both the Police Officers Association and the CRB so it represents a true conflict of interest,” Talbert said. The new proposed commission would have the ability to investigate cases. It would also have independent lawyers and subpoena power. The head of the San Diego POA said the support a measure on the ballot to let the people decide what is best for police oversight. “I think if people go into things with an investigative mind trying to find the truth, I think that any of these things can be very effective,” said POA President Jack Schaeffer. Talbert said even if passed, the city council still has to write an ordinance and some of the language could change. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thousands of San Diego students Friday are expected to take part in the county's largest ever high school walkout on climate change. "I think it's a pivotal moment for youth," said Katelynn Sutton, a senior at High Tech High in Point Loma and event organizer. Around 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sutton will lead dozens of students plan on a walkout. The students will hop on a bus to San Diego's City Hall, where they will attend a public rally for climate action for the rest of the school day."It's going to show adults they need to take action now because we don't have any more time," said Sutton.Around the same time at University City High, senior Summer Camporesi will be leading hundreds of students on a walkout."We'll be meeting in the middle of school and then walking up Genesee [Avenue] to Standley Middle School," said Camporesi.At a park near the school, they will join several hundred middle school students for an hour-long rally, before heading back to class. In all, dozens of schools across San Diego County are expected to take part in the global climate strike, most of them high schools."We're showing it's super important. We're willing to take time out of our education," said Camporesi.Several area school districts, including San Diego Unified and Sweetwater Union High School District, have passed resolutions supporting the youth-led global campaign. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Starlight Bowl in Balboa Park is facing a setback after thieves broke into the theater.According to San Diego Police, an unknown suspect or suspects forced their way into the building between Oct. 17 and 19. The thieves ransacked two separate, secured structures on the property.A number of high-end television production systems, autographed guitars, studio cameras, and other items were stolen. “The doors were physically broken down,” said Steve Stopper, founder of Save Starlight. “There’s been a lot of vandalism and theft and they had to have been here a long, long time.”Stopper said his foundation has been working for five years to bring life back to the theater that closed down in 2012. The City of San Diego has offered support to his organization.Repairs were being completed after a tree came crashing down on the Starlight Bowl months ago, lifting asphalt in the parking lot and crushing part of the building.“This is definitely kicking us back to almost a starting point again,” said Stopper.Security cameras and alarms were turned off as repairs to the building were underway.Stopper said the items stolen were worth well over ,000. Many, including the autographed guitars, were set to be auctioned off at a gala next year in an effort to raise money for the revitalization project.“We need someone to step up and help us,” said Stopper. “We need new options for the future. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Port of San Diego is taking extra precautions with cruise lines amid heightened awareness surrounding the coronavirus.About 38 ships are expected to dock in San Diego through May, some shops that rely on travelers are concerned business may slow down if cruises are canceled.Some say they've already noticed a change.The Port of San Diego says they installed these hand washing stations once the coronavirus concerns started rising.
