POTRERO (CNS) - One person was killed Thursday afternoon when a vehicle crashed at a rural road crossing in the far southern reaches of San Diego County, struck a power pole and burst into flames, igniting a brush fire.The fatal wreck took place shortly before 2:30 p.m. at Hartley Hill and Round Potrero roads, north of state Route 94 in Potrero, according to the California Highway Patrol.The burning vehicle ignited a vegetation blaze that blackened about three open acres before firefighters could get the flames under control, Cal Fire reported.Further details about the traffic accident, included the victim's identity, were not immediately available. 665

(AP) — A 73-year-old man who was stranded in the remote Oregon high desert for four days with his two dogs was rescued when a long-distance mountain biker discovered him near death on a dirt road, authorities said Thursday.Gregory Randolph had hiked about 14 miles (22.5 kilometers) with one of his dogs after his Jeep got stuck in a narrow, dry creek bed. He was barely conscious when biker Tomas Quinones found him on July 18.Quinones, of Portland, hadn't seen anyone all day as he biked across the so-called Oregon Outback, a sparsely populated expanse of scrub brush and cattle lands in south-central Oregon. (CNS) - Customs and Border Protection officers found 560 pounds of methamphetamine and cocaine, worth nearly million, cemented inside several quartz boulders at a cargo crossing at the Tecate Port of Entry near Potrero, the agency reported Wednesday.Officers broke open the boulders around 10:45 a.m. Monday after a big rig driver arrived at the border crossing with a shipment listed as "multiple tons of beach pebbles and stones," according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials.Cemented inside the quartz boulders, officers found 229 packages wrapped in black electrical tape, officials said.
