SAN DIEGO (CNS) - On the day after Thanksgiving, County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation encourages San Diegans to swap shopping plans for outdoor experiences Friday on "Green Friday," a park-centric holiday celebrating the "upside of outside."Green Friday promotes fitness and fun in county parks. Events are intended to be active and educational -- aligning with county parks' mission to balance recreation opportunity with efforts to protect and preserve land and local wildlife.Activities are open to the public and there is no cost to attend. The day-use fees at parks where they are collected will be waived.From Story Trails and tree planting to virtual nature trivia and fitness meet-ups, all in-person outdoor activities will follow public health orders and require face coverings and social distancing. SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- The first woman to assume command of a U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier has been assigned command of the San Diego-based USS Abraham Lincoln, the Navy announced Wednesday.Capt. Amy Bauernschmidt will lead one of the Navy's 11 nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, after previously serving as the ship's executive officer from September 2016 to January 2019.That post was also historic, as she was the first woman to serve as second-in-command aboard an aircraft carrier, according to the Navy.Bauernschmidt is slated to take command of USS Abraham Lincoln this summer."I am incredibly honored and humbled to be selected," she said of her assignment. ``I love leading sailors and I take that responsibility extremely seriously."The Milwaukee native was part of the first graduating class in which women were allowed to serve aboard combatant ships and aircraft when she graduated from the United States Naval Academy in May 1994.She was designated as a naval aviator in 1996 and has served with several helicopter squadrons throughout her career. 1074

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - SeaWorld San Diego announced Friday that it reached a milestone in the construction of its ``dive'' roller coaster by installing the ride's highest section of track 153 feet above ground. The ``topping-out'' ceremony included a crane placing an American flag at the ride's highest section. The ride, slated to open next summer, is being built adjacent to the Journey to Atlantis attraction, on what had previously been a parking lot. Construction on the ride, advertised as the tallest, fastest and longest such coaster in the state, began in August. The park originally announced the ride in January with the name ``Mako'' after the endangered shark species, which is considered the fastest shark in the world. Park officials announced its new name, Emperor, last month, saying it would reflect the ability of emperor penguins to dive to depths of 1,800 feet in the waters of their native Antarctica. After the 153-foot climb, Emperor will plunge back down 143 feet while reaching speeds of more than 60 mph, according to SeaWorld. The ride will include nearly 2,500 feet of track, ``floorless'' cars that will hold 18 riders in three six-person rows and penguin conservation and awareness elements through a partnership with Penguins International. The ride is being built by Swiss roller coaster manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard Consulting Engineers. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County arson investigators were called to the scene of a commercial structure fire today in Spring Valley, authorities said.The fire began at 8:02 a.m. at a structure in the 300 block of Elkelton Place, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department reported.The fire was put out by San Miguel Fire District firefighters shortly afterward. The fire was isolated to the commercial structure, sheriff's officials said.No injuries were reported. Roads were closed at Paradise Valley Road and Elkelton Place, as well as Paradise Valley Road and Worthington Street, officials said. 607
