KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City, Missouri Health Department is speaking out after it poured bleach on food intended to be given to homeless people.Nellie McCool, who helps run Free Hot Soup Kansas City, has been helping the homeless for years until Sunday."Officers and health inspectors demanded we destroy our food and we were violating health code violations by sharing meals with our friends," said McCool. The department said the group wasn't following the law about serving the homeless."They were notified back in a meeting in September that they needed to get a permit and they just outright said they refused to do that," said Dr. Rex Archer, director of health for KCMO.But McCool said she never heard from the department."That is incorrect," McCool said. "We never had any kind of government official ever come and speak with anybody at any of the public parks."According to the health department, the permit is free and all organizations that want to serve food to homeless people (or anyone) needs this permit. Archer said the food was also not being handled correctly and could put others at risk."Preparing food in all these individuals homes when people haven't been trained, prepare food safely. Then, they are taking it and transporting it in trunks of cars when its cool. It's supposed to be warm food but they have no insulation or a way to keep the food warm," Archer said. 1424

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — More and more women are seeking help getting pregnant. With that help has come an increase in the number of women freezing eggs and embryos. The Centers for Disease Control recently released preliminary numbers for 2016, the latest data available for assisted reproductive technology, or ART, because it takes two years to finalize births and verify data. The data was collected from 463 reporting clinics in the US.There were 76,930 babies born in 2016 as a result of fertility treatments. About 11,000 of those were sets of twins.Of the 263,577 ART cycles (the two-week process of stimulating egg production with the intent to transfer embryos), 65,840 were done so to freeze all resulting eggs or embryos for future pregnancy attempts. The CDC points out the use of assisted reproductive technology is relatively rare, “its use has doubled over the past decade” resulting in 1.7 percent of all infants born in the United States every year are conceived using ART.One of the reporting clinics is Midwest Reproductive Center in Olathe, Kansas.Dr. Dan Gehlbach started the practice in 2004 and has been a reproductive endocrinologist for 25 years. He says he’s moved to almost exclusively freezing all embryos.“Once the data was clear that transferring an embryo soon after egg retrieval was not the optimum time for a transfer, and we could freeze an embryo and allow the uterus to recover from all the hormonal changes that had occurred, and then place the woman on a much lower dose of hormones that just prepare her uterus for an embryo to attach…then we were able to show an improvement in pregnancy rates by transferring a single embryo that had been frozen and thawed verses where we used to transfer two fresh embryos almost routinely,” said Dr. Gehlbach.Gehlbach says this is not only increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy, it is also lowering the risk of twins or triplets. He’s now been following this plan for three years at his clinic. The doctor said advances in medicine may also keep costs down. If a couple can commit to even one round of in-vitro fertilization, fertility doctors can freeze multiple eggs or embryos so the future costs are for thawing and implantation, verses more rounds of IVF.An IVF cycle typically runs ,000 to ,000 when all costs are considered. If no embryos are frozen, the full IVF cycle must be repeated for another attempt. If embryos are frozen after one IVF cycle, thawing an already frozen embryo and implanting it in a woman’s uterus is significantly cheaper than a full IVF cycle. One doctor’s office quoted us about ,000. 2623

Just days after meeting with the family of a victim of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre, Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade on Wednesday visited the school in Parkland, Florida.Tweets surfaced of the visit.Wade is in his second stint with the Heat after he was traded earlier this season from the Cavaliers. When he learned that Joaquin Oliver, one of 17 people killed in the shooting, was buried in a Wade Heat jersey, the NBA star dedicated the rest of the season to the teen."This is why we will not just SHUT up and dribble!" Wade said in a tweet on February 26, adding in another: "It's way BIGGER than basketball. We are the voices for the people that don't get to be heard."The day after Wade made that dedication, he hit a game-winning jumper to defeat the Philadelphia 76ers 102-101 in Miami. The night Wade hit the shot, he wore shoes with Oliver's name written on them. DWADE JUST PULLED UP AT DOUGLAS BROOOOOOOOOO WHAT pic.twitter.com/YYTaG5GFa5— sebi #neveragain #msdstrong (@sebiloveschoco) March 7, 2018 1041

KENOSHA, Wis. — A man was air-flighted to a local hospital after he was shot by a Kenosha police officer Sunday evening, police say.Kenosha police said the man was shot near a home at 40th and 28th streets in Kenosha just after 5 p.m. Officers were called to a 'domestic incident' at the location.A family member confirmed to Scripps station WTMJ in Milwaukee that the man was Jacob Blake, 29.Police did not say what led up to the shooting but said that officers offered immediate aid.Kenosha police said Blake is in serious condition. A large crowd gathered near the area Sunday evening.A photo of Jacob Blake, provided by his family.A short video circulating on social media shows a man, presumably Blake, walking toward a vehicle. The video shows that police shoot the man in the back as he opened the driver's door of the car.Blake's family says children were in the vehicle at the time of the shooting. The Kenosha County Sheriff's Department and Wisconsin State Patrol are currently investigating the incident. No other details were released.Crowds of protesters gathered in Kenosha after the video of the shooting spread on social media. Fires were set to dumpsters meant to block off roads in the area. The Kenosha County Courthouse and Administration Building were both closed Monday due to overnight damage from the unrest.Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers released a statement regarding the shooting late Sunday evening."Tonight, Jacob Blake was shot in the back multiple times, in broad daylight, in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Kathy and I join his family, friends, and neighbors in hoping earnestly that he will not succumb to his injuries. While we do not have all of the details yet, what we know for certain is that he is not the first Black man or person to have been shot or injured or mercilessly killed at the hands of individuals in law enforcement in our state or our country," said Evers. "We stand with all those who have and continue to demand justice, equity, and accountability for Black lives in our country—lives like those of George Floyd, of Breonna Taylor, Tony Robinson, Dontre Hamilton, Ernest Lacy, and Sylville Smith. And we stand against excessive use of force and immediate escalation when engaging with Black Wisconsinites."Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represents the families of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, has been retained to represent Blake's family. He issued this statement Monday: “We all watched the horrific video of Jacob Blake being shot in the back several times by Kenosha police. Even worse, his three sons witnessed their father collapse after being riddled with bullets. Their irresponsible, reckless, and inhumane actions nearly cost the life of a man who was simply trying to do the right thing by intervening in a domestic incident. It’s a miracle he’s still alive. We will seek justice for Jacob Blake and for his family as we demand answers from the Kenosha Police Department. How many more of these tragic 'while Black' tragedies will it take until the racial profiling and undervaluing of Black lives by the police finally stops?”Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden also released a statement, calling for "an immediate, full and transparent investigation" and added that "the officers must be held accountable."This story was originally published by Mayra Monroy on WTMJ in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. 3365

Kanye West’s unlikely White House bid is getting help qualifying for presidential ballots in key states from Republicans around the country, fueling suspicions he’s being pushed to run by allies of President Donald Trump hoping to siphon support away from Joe Biden. The rapper's paperwork to make ballots has been aided by Republicans in Colorado, Wisconsin, Ohio, Arkansas and Vermont. Because Biden has strong appeal among Black voters and is counting on young people to win in November, having a celebrity like West on the ballot could hurt him. But West's true appeal with both cohorts remains to be seen.Despite West technically opposing Trump on the presidential ballot, Trump said earlier this week "I like him.""I like him, he's always been very nice to me," Trump said. Trump added that he was not personally involved in getting West on the ballot. 867
