SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Metropolitan Transit System officials say ridership spiked in the first quarter of the 2020 fiscal year by more than a million trips compared to the same time last year.From July through September of 2019, 22,258,345 trips were taken on an MTS trolley or bus. In 2018, MTS saw 21,313,801 trips. It's a 4.4% rise from one year to the next."It's encouraging," says MTS Chair Nathan Fletcher.MTS officials say a heavy focus on investment over the past few years is starting to pay off. They recently completed a million plan to streamline services and add frequency to many bus routes. They also added the South Bay Rapid route from Otay Mesa to Downtown and expanded the Rapid Superloop service in the University City area."As we add those services where folks want them, as we squeeze every dime we can get out of our existing budget, as we make a full commitment to engage the community in what they want, people will use it," says Fletcher.The surge in riders helps MTS buck a nationwide trend where public transportation is on the decline.Even in San Diego, year-to-year numbers had been dropping for four straight years, since hitting a record high in 2015 (see chart above).Fletcher says it's a positive step as the city tries to meet strict climate goals that require a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.Recently, SANDAG put out a plan to increase transit ridership to 10%. That sparked a debate over how much money should go towards transit vs. road construction.Fletcher says any money spent on transit also benefits drivers."Every person who chooses transit is one less car driving," he says. "The individual who says, 'I'm always gonna drive,' should support transit because that means less congestion. Less congestion means less toxic pollution and less greenhouse gas emissions. So it's a win for everybody whether you use transit or drive your car."To raise money for more expansion, MTS is looking into a ballot measure for the November 2020 election that would add a half-cent sales tax. 2046

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police Officers are patrolling the College Area, cracking down on noise and health order violations as San Diego teeters on the edge of the red tier for coronavirus restrictions.Friday eight cease and desist orders were issued to College Area houses. The reason being the residence "intends to hold large gatherings on Oct. 30, 2020, - Nov. 1, 2020, in blatant violation of the Order of the State Health Officer, the County Order of the Health Officer and Emergency Regulations, and CDPH's October 9, 2020 gathering guidance."Saturday on Dorothy Drive near Dorothy Way it was easy to hear music, excited yelling, and chatter from multiple homes. A steady stream of young people came and left various houses.Normally, Jean Hoeger says it gets pretty wild, but when she went out Friday, "it was pretty quiet you didn't see the hoards of kids walking on the street which is kinda common in the College Area."Hoeger is a representative of the College Area Public Safety Committee."There were parties but they all seemed to be inside small groups, loud noise was not really present so nothing you could call into the police department for a noise disturbance," Hoeger said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Gas and Electric is addressing another round of higher-than-normal energy bills, saying it’s no mistake.In an email sent to customers this week, SDG&E said July 1 through August 21 was the hottest on record in their territory.The heat wave drove up power usage and power bills. SDG&E said even coastal residents were steadily running their air conditioners during that period.The SDG&E email included tips for keeping power use lower. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County is expected to consider a plan to open up county parks for worship and workouts.Supervisor Dianne Jacob is proposing the idea which is expected to be discussed by the board on Aug. 5. The proposal would make it easier for houses of worship and fitness centers, impacted by the pandemic, to utilize county parks. The proposal aims to speed up the permit process and waive fees.Public health orders have hindered the operations of many houses of worship and fitness centers after they were forced to close their indoor areas.
