SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The family of Crystal Odom filled a San Diego courtroom Monday morning to hear a judge sentence the man convicted of killing Odom in a drive-by shooting in 1995. The judge sentenced Aswad Walker to 15 years to life for Odom's murder, plus three years for gang ties. He was convicted of second-degree murder back in February for Odom's death. Two previous trials had ended in hung juries. Odom's parents spoke before the sentencing. Her mother called Walker a coward and told him he would get what he deserved in prison. When Odom's father, James Odom, spoke, the family became very emotional, tears and sobs could be heard throughout the courtroom. Odom said a burden was lifted off his shoulders and that the sentencing marked an end to a long ordeal. At the time of the shooting, Crystal was with her then boyfriend and her 10-month-old daughter. Her daughter and boyfriend were unhurt. 959

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Ballots will arrive in the mail for more people than ever in this election, but many Americans have relied on this method to vote for decades.Military families, people with disabilities, and Americans living overseas make up some of the demographics familiar with the process.“I haven’t been to a voting place since 1986," said Tori Zwisler. "It’s been a long time!”Now a San Diego resident, Zwisler lived in China for many years running an environmental nonprofit. While she hasn't waited in a polling line for over three decades, she hasn't missed an election."Living outside of America doesn’t mean you’re not American, it doesn't mean you don’t care about the issues, and it certainly doesn’t mean that you don’t have an opinion about who you want to lead your country," said Zwisler. Now back in the states, she still exercises her constitutional right via the U.S. Postal Service.“I honestly prefer the luxury of voting at home because I can look online, and I can check the websites of what both party's opinions are of the initiatives or of the candidate's backgrounds," said Zwisler. In states like California, Oregon and Colorado, voters have had this option for many years.According to a Pew Research Center analysis, the share of voters casting a ballot by mail has been growing steadily over the years, increasing nearly threefold between 1996 and 2016, from 7.8% to nearly 21%.But while states like Oregon and Washington conduct their elections almost entirely by mail, other states have seen relatively few mail ballots, the analysis goes on to explain.“I think everyone has to weigh in on what’s happening right now, it’s critical," said Zwisler. As the pandemic reshapes how we vote in this election, Zwisler believes the changes could actually strengthen our democracy, making voting easier and convenient for more Americans. 1868

San Diego (KGTV)- Improved bike lanes are making it easier for cyclists to get around. The new lanes are a part of the city’s effort to protect riders and get more people out of their cars. The city is in the first phase of its Downtown San Diego Mobility Plan. They are hoping to have at least 6 percent of commuters riding their bikes by the end of the project. Jamie Hampton has been riding her bike to work for over ten years. At times, she says she hasn’t felt safe around moving cars. “It’s challenging because you have to kind of figure out how to share a lane with a car.”The city is making it easier for riders to get around the Downtown area with protected bike lanes. White reflector poles separate the lanes. Some have another layer of protection with street parking spaces. There are also designated signal lights for cyclists. The City Council adopted the estimated million mobility plan in 2016. It calls for 9 miles of protected bike lanes in the Downtown area. “It’s a nice balance of how to share a road with a car.”The city hopes to have all three phase of the mobility plan completed by 2021. 1125

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A gang member was sentenced to more than 126 years in prison Tuesday for the murder of Navy pilot James Celani at Horton Plaza in 2017."This is not living. This is hell," said Celani's cousin, Sean, who was also shot in the incident. "Mr. Morris killed my happiness and my life."Sean, who asked not to have his last name revealed, and Celani were at the Mad House Comedy Club that night. Upon leaving the club, they walked past a group of men, including Morris. Sean said he offered an innocent greeting, "What's up, brother?" At that point, Morris pulled a gun and opened fire, killing Celani and hitting Sean in the leg. Prosecutors say Morris, who has a history of violence, was angry because of a fight that evening with his girlfriend.Celani's wife spoke during a victim impact statement, describing how she and their three children have suffered since her husband's murder. She called for Morris to get the maximum sentence. "The system couldn't or wouldn't protect Jim and Sean from Arrow Morris, but you can safeguard society from Arrow Morris by letting the punishment fit the crime and sending him to prison for the rest of his life."Morris has 60 days to appeal his sentence. 1221
