In a sea of young people fighting for their future, there's a 13-year-old girl named Haven Coleman.In many ways, she's just like any other teenager, but she's also the co-founder of a national organization called U.S. Youth Climate Strike. She spends every Friday striking outside the Colorado State Capitol.“So the story... involves sloths," Haven says.Inspired several years ago to save the sloths she deeply loves, Haven decided to become a climate activist."I was trying to do everything and anything, and I'm still doing that to stop climate change because this is something that's so like... big, so terrifying, and that's gonna be following me and my generation," she explains. "And it has been for our whole lives."Growing up during a time when climate change is a common topic, Haven wasn't shocked when she found out carbon dioxide has now reached a level in the atmosphere that hasn't been seen for three million years. On May 11, sensors at the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii measured concentrations of the greenhouse gas to be at 415 parts per million. That means for every 1 million molecules of gas in the atmosphere, 415 were carbon dioxide. Compare that to 315 ppm 60 years ago, and 280 at the start of the industrial revolution. Without human interference, carbon in fossil fuels would leak slowly into the atmosphere through volcanic activity over millions of years. That's how the Earth has had these levels before. But a process that is normally very slow has been accelerated by the burning of coal, oil, and natural gas."Those greenhouse gases, that carbon pollution that we're putting into the atmosphere, much of that is going to stay there for a very long period of time and affect our climate for decades to come," Tony Dutzik said.Tony Dutzik with Environment America says what's most concerning about this data, is that human beings have never lived in a climate as hot as the one that existed three million years ago. Sea levels were approximately 50 feet higher than where they are today.According to Scripps Institution of Oceanography, vegetation records from that era called Pliocene show forests growing in the Canadian arctic, and savannas covering what is now known as the north African desert. The impacts of a changing climate are already evident in the United States."We're beginning to see supercharged storms -- storms that are gaining energy from our warmer oceans -- that are dumping immense amounts of rainfall. Storms like Hurricane Harvey, and Hurricane Florence in just the last few years," Dutzik says. "Sea level is rising at about a tenth of an inch per year, and that rate of rise is accelerating, and so cities like Boston and Miami increasingly have to deal with coastal flooding. And in places in the west, we're seeing larger more intense wildfires that burn hotter and are harder to control."As catastrophic as these events may seem, Dutzik says change is possible if everyone plays a part."Every day we have the opportunity when we're making energy efficiency upgrades to our homes, when we're purchasing our next car, when we're choosing where to live -- whether we live some place that's close to the places that we need to be or far away," Dutzik says.However, Dutzik notes a majority of change necessary to alter the course the earth's current projections will take a lot of political power. Power that young people like Haven are strongly pushing for."I hope that we fix this," Haven says. It was just an ordinary day for a snowplow driver in California, until he struck a car buried in snow -- then his day turned into a rescue mission.On February 17, the driver was clearing the snow-covered roads of South Lake Tahoe when he struck the back of a car that was illegally parked on the street. The driver contacted police to start the process of getting the vehicle towed out of the way, but as police and the driver started to dig out the car, to their surprise, a woman stuck her hand out of the car window waving for help.She said she had been there four to five hours, but the amount of snow covering her car led officials to believe she possibly was there longer."Being inside of a buried car, or starting a car buried in snow, could have deadly consequences," said Chris Fiore, communications manager for the City of South Lake Tahoe. "If we had not gotten to her, I'm afraid this story would have a very different ending."It took some time to dig her out, but the 48-year-old woman was able to walk away from the scene uninjured.City officials released news of the incident on Tuesday to warn residents about parking illegally, especially while the area braces for another winter storm."One of the biggest issues we've had this winter is illegally parked cars," said Ray Jarvis, public works director, 1331
It was January of 1980 when 21-year-old Helene Pruszynski was kidnapped, raped and murdered in Douglas County, Colorado. Her body was found in a field, but police never identified a suspect. Pruszynski’s murder became a cold case.“We consider a case that does not have any viable leads after one to two years a cold case,” cold case detective Shannon Jensen said.However, Jensen says the case was never forgotten. Detectives continued to re-open it for 40 years. Then, with the help of new DNA technology, the suspect was identified in December of last year as James Curtis Clanton. He will be sentenced on April 10, based on the first-degree murder laws in 1980. Pruszynski’s sister – the only immediate family still living – finally received the closure she had waited decades for.“She had told us that she thought that this may never be solved, and she had somewhat given up on her hope. And she couldn’t believe that after all these years we were able to identify and arrest a suspect in her sister’s murder,” Detective Jensen said.One key element to solving the case was DNA from people related to Clanton.Detective Jensen actively searched a public database called GEDmatch, which is used as a way for people to learn more about their family history. She came across Rob Diehl, who turned out to be Clanton's fourth cousin. When Detective Jensen reached out, he says he went through a wide range of emotions.However, Diehl says it didn’t take long for him to realize he wanted to help, especially when he discovered how serious the crime was. He says because Clanton was such a distant cousin, they never knew each other.“You just think… it’s been cold for decades and so long that if there’s no evidence now, this isn’t going to be solved for the family or to bring somebody to justice,” Diehl said.So Diehl gave Detective Jensen access to his family tree and his DNA. Those both are critical elements in a newly utilized DNA technology called genetic genealogy.“Traditional genealogy is using public records to document a person’s family tree and their ancestors. Genetic genealogy is when you’re using DNA to help with that process,” Chief Genetic Genealogist CeCe Moore said.CeCe Moore is the Chief Genetic Genealogist at Parabon Nanolabs. Parabon assisted with Ms. Pruszynski’s case, and the tech company has helped law enforcement across the nation identify more than 100 criminals the past two years."For us, significant amounts of DNA could be less than one percent, which is really a breakthrough because previously with law enforcement cases, you needed to have an exact match, or a very close family member,” Moore said. In Pruszynski’s case, law enforcement in 1980 collected plenty of DNA evidence, and stored it properly making it possible for detectives today to upload a DNA profile to find her killer. In fact, Detective Jensen says she’s currently in the process of solving two more cold cases. “This technology has given detectives like myself another tool to add to our toolbox. It’s given new life to cases that we once thought might have been unsolvable,” Detective Jensen said.Not only is this technology finding those responsible for crimes, but it’s also ruling out the innocent.“If genetic genealogy is used earlier in the process, it can really help avoid hundreds or even thousands of innocent people who are looked at as persons of interest in these cases,” Moore said.Moore says 30 million people have uploaded their DNA to genetic websites the past decade. However, in order for law enforcement to gain access to it, you would need to upload your DNA to a public database like GEDmatch, and ‘opt in’ for law enforcement to see your profile.“If you have done a DNA kit, or you’re thinking about doing a DNA kit on ancestry or 23andMe or My Heritage, download that raw DNA data file and upload it to GEDMatch because everyone can be a crime solver,” Detective Jensen said. 3926
