SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- From Teddy Bears to cereal boxes, the TSA gave an exclusive look at the alarming items used to conceal explosives at the airport. 4.1 million travelers are expected to travel in and out of San Diego this summer, making it busier than ever. “It may seem like a pain on some travel days taking off your shoes dropping them in a bin and separating a laptop in another but it could be saving your life.”If you’ve traveled through an airport, you’re no stranger to the TSA checkpoint. “Our officers need a clear view of the electronic itself making sure circuitry, the electronics inside of it haven’t been tampered with.”It’s not just electronics, but stuffed animals are also used to disguise explosives. “Because they think that our officers would be disarmed because it’s a child item.”From coffee beans to baby formula and peanut butter, TSA has seen it all. “We’re in no way saying every passenger is bringing these types of items but it only takes one and we really need to get it right every single time.” 1036

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Fire crews responded after a boat caught fire in the San Diego Bay Monday afternoon. Video sent to 10News by a viewer shows smoke billowing from the vessel near the Coronado Bridge. According to Harbor Police, the distress call went out around 2 p.m. An Air Marine Operations boat on routine patrol was the first on scene. The federal marine agents used fire extinguishers to put out the fire, which was confined to the engine compartment. Fortunately, conditions were calm at the time."It's very difficult to control a boat that's burning, not only do you have to deal with the people on board, you have to make sure that you ensure their safety and then you have to deal with a floating fire," said Harbor Police Lt. Victor Banuelos. The fire was quickly put out, but three people and the two officers were taken to the hospital for the treatment of smoke inhalation. Firefighters believe an electrical short in the engine sparked the fire, but the incident is under investigation. The 36 foot cabin cruiser was towed to the 10th Avenue Marine Terminal. “I am proud of the work our Air and Marine boat crew conducted this busy Labor Day,” said Hunter Davis, Director of Air and Marine Operations in San Diego. “Their vigilance helped minimize the prospect that these events would have resulted in a tragic loss of life on the water.” 1366

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, LEGOLAND had to shut its doors back in March. But that doesn't mean kids are losing out on the LEGO fun. LEGO "Master Builder" Jessica Ewud is passing along her creative knowledge through virtual LEGO art classes. "To keep the kids occupied," says Ewud. "While they are stuck inside during this pandemic with nothing to do."Ewud is a professional artist who was looking to transform her art in a creative way. Then one night, she had a dream she created an Abraham Lincoln made out of LEGO. She thought the idea was so brilliant, she went out and got the materials to make it."I'd always thought of Lego as a kids toy, but as an artist, I was looking at it differently. I was looking at it as an art medium," she said. Her art creations got her noticed, and she was chosen to participate in the competition show, LEGO Masters, where she became a show finalist. She also has one of her LEGO artworks on display at LEGOLAND."I got selected out of thousands of people to be on Lego Masters, and my peacock is on display at LEGOLAND," says Ewud. And now she is passing along her knowledge, by offering virtual LEGO art classes."I'm offering some awesome classes online via Outschool," said Ewud. "I try to make my classes as engaging and creative as possible. I feel when kids are stuck inside, the best thing they can do is be creative." 1391

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For months San Diego bee removal companies have been swarmed with calls to remove hives, but where is best to relocate them? One Encinitas company has a solution, hooking up property owners who want bees with beekeepers."When your house gets invaded by bees, instead of spraying them with poison we take them out alive and chemical-free and find good homes for them," said James Mcdonald, founder of the Encinitas Bee Company.Mcdonald will relocate hives to homes or businesses interested in hosting a hive; then a local beekeeper will tend to them."Hundreds of potential beekeepers living in apartments would love to keep bees, but they have no land," said Mcdonald. The Host a Hive program is free for property owners, and they get to keep any honey produced. Mcdonald said he shared a post on Nextdoor about the program and was flooded with messages from people wanting to host a hive. He currently has several bee hives at home that he'd like to relocate. "I'm bursting at the seam and really need people and beekeepers that are willing to help me," said Mcdonald. His ultimate goal is not only to save bees but make people environmentally conscious. To learn more about hosting a hive contact Mcdonald at: (858) 750-5438. 1252

The fire comes five months after another fire ignited in November 2018. That fire, however, was reportedly ruled as an electrical fire.“ATF is committed to working alongside state and local law enforcement by bringing its resources to determine the origin and cause of this fire that resulted in a total loss for this business,” said Carlos Canino, the special agent in charge of ATF Los Angeles Field Division. “ATF will provide whatever is necessary to thoroughly investigate and provide answers.”Thursday's blaze was reported at about 1:30 a.m. at the ORW building (7915 Balboa Ave.) The fire caused an estimated .5 million in damages and the warehouse's contents were deemed a total loss.
