RACINE, Wisconsin -- Manufacturer SC Johnson announced Wednesday that between 300 and 400 positions in the company would be eliminated due to an organizational change.The change was first announced to employees back in January, according to a statement from the company. Some of the eliminated roles were already open and will not be filled, while others will result in employees losing their jobs."Many affected employees" were notified Wednesday, the statement says."The company is healthy and our brands continue to be leaders in their categories," said Kelly M. President Donald Trump says he has issued a pardon to his longtime ally Roger Stone, according to a statement from the White House.Stone, who was convicted of several crimes in connection to the investigation launched by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, was set to begin a 40-month prison sentence on Tuesday."Roger Stone is a victim of the Russia Hoax that the Left and its allies in the media perpetuated for years in an attempt to undermine the Trump Presidency," the White House statement read. "There was never any collusion between the Trump Campaign, or the Trump Administration, with Russia."Stone was briefly and advisor to the Trump campaign during the 2016 election. Though he left the campaign in controversy, he still supported Trump and the campaign on his behalf. He's alleged to have made contact with WikiLeaks, the organization that published a trove of hacked emails linked to the Clinton campaign.Stone was convicted of seven counts of lying to Congress, obstruction of justice and witness tampering in connection with his testimony during a House Intelligence Committee and his attempts to have a friend lie to investigators on his behalf.Upon his conviction, federal attorneys recommended Stone serve a prison sentence of between seven and nine years. However, the Department of Justice quickly rescinded that resignation, calling it excessive. In response, all the federal attorneys on the case resigned, and Attorney General Bill Barr was criticized for his department's rescinding of the recommendation."Mr. Stone would be put at serious medical risk in prison. He has appealed his conviction and is seeking a new trial," the White House statement read. "He maintains his innocence and has stated that he expects to be fully exonerated by the justice system. Mr. Stone, like every American, deserves a fair trial and every opportunity to vindicate himself before the courts. The President does not wish to interfere with his efforts to do so. At this time, however, and particularly in light of the egregious facts and circumstances surrounding his unfair prosecution, arrest, and trial, the President has determined to commute his sentence. (CNS) - A teenage boy was fatally struck by a pickup truck while riding a skateboard on a residential road in the San Diego Country Estates neighborhood of Ramona, authorities said Wednesday.The fatality occurred around 7:20 p.m. Tuesday on Barona Mesa Road near La Plata Court, in a neighborhood south of San Vicente Road, California Highway Patrol Officer Jeff Christy said.Two teenage boys were riding skateboards to the east in the eastbound lane of Barona Mesa Road and another teen was riding a bicycle eastbound in the westbound lane, Christy said. He said that when a 20-year-old Ramona man driving a 2001 Ford F-150 eastbound on Barona Mesa Road came around a left-hand curve in the road, the front of the truck one of the boys, who was riding his skateboard in the middle of the eastbound lane.The driver stopped immediately and began rendering medical aid to the victim, the officer said. Medical personnel also responded, but the youth was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was withheld pending family notification.Intoxication was not a factor in the crash, Christy said. 1112
Restaurant servers dodged a bullet this week with a provision tucked into the .3 trillion federal spending bill.Late last year, the Department of Labor proposed a rule?that would have authorized restaurants to share tips between servers and cooks. That would allow employers to keep some tip money for themselves, as long as each worker made at least the full federal minimum wage of .25 an hour.Workers' rights groups argued the rule change would lower the pay of those who work at restaurants, hotels and bars. Opponents of the rule held splashy public protests. The Labor Department received more than 218,000 mostly negative comments on the proposal.It appeared to have worked. The spending bill, which President Donald Trump signed into law on Friday, includes a section that makes it clear that employers may not pocket any portion of tips that diners leave for workers."We beat them," said Saru Jayaraman, president of the nonprofit Restaurant Opportunities Center. "I think they realized how outrageous what they were proposing sounded to the public, and basically they backed down."Representatives for the restaurant industry, however, are also pleased.The National Restaurant Association said it never asked for employers to be allowed to keep tips in the first place. Angelo Amador, senior VP at the trade group, argued that most employers wouldn't skim tips even if they were allowed to."A decision by a restaurant to retain some or all of the customer tips rather than distributing them to the hourly staff would be unpopular with employees and guests alike, and it could severely damage the public's perception of the restaurant," Amador wrote in his comment on the proposed rule.The left-leaning Economic Policy Institute disagreed, saying that many employers take a portion of tips even in places where it's forbidden, and would do so even more often if it were legal. In a recent report, it estimated that servers would lose some .8 billion in tips annually to their employers.The language in the spending bill also effectively does another big thing: It allows employers to pool tips and distribute them among staff, as long as the employer also pays the full minimum wage. Many owners have long sought to boost the pay of kitchen workers and bussers by forcing servers to share their tips."We want to ensure that servers, bussers, dishwashers, cooks, and others who work as a team to provide great customer service in the industry have access to share in tips left by customers, as this legislation clearly allows," said Amador.That's fine with labor advocates at the National Employment Law Project, who say that pooling tips is a good way to create wage equity, as long workers are paid the full minimum wage and tips aren't shared with managers or any other supervisors. "We enthusiastically support this compromise," said Judy Conti, the group's director of federal affairs.Going forward, however, there may be less agreement between workers' rights advocates and the National Restaurant Association.Currently, the federal minimum wage for workers who get tips is .13 an hour.
