LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jon Stewart is returning to TV with a new home more than five years after bowing out as host of “The Daily Show.”The Apple TV+ streaming service says Stewart will host an hour-long current affairs series exploring topics of national interest as well as his advocacy work.Stewart has been an outspoken supporter of military veterans and 9/11 first responders. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Mayor Eric Garcetti conceded that Los Angeles reopened too quickly and again warned that the city was “on the brink” of new shutdown orders as the coronavirus continues to surge in California. Appearing on CNN, Garcetti was asked about an LA Times editorial that criticized the rapid reopening of California — which was followed by a spike in new COVID-19 cases. Garcetti said the decisions were made at the state and county levels. He added that LA officials wouldn't hesitate to implement new stay-at-home orders if the numbers don't turn around. LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Utah man was held without bail Thursday on charges of murder in the deaths of an off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy and another man.Rhett McKenzie Nelson, 30, of St. George, wore a navy blue jail uniform during his initial arraignment in Los Angeles Superior Court as the family of Deputy Joseph G. Solano and uniformed deputies with black mourning bands over the badges looked on.Authorities allege Nelson shot Dmitry Koltsov from his vehicle in downtown Los Angeles on Monday, attempted to kill Aleksandr Chudetckii, then fatally shot Solano inside a Jack in the Box in suburban Alhambra. They also say he committed two robberies in Long Beach.Nelson's family says he suffers from mental illness and an opiate addiction. Defense attorney Jenn Bartick was not immediately available for comment.Nelson is due back in court on July 22 for further arraignment. He did not enter a plea on Thursday before Judge Teresa Sullivan and quietly answered, "Yes, Your Honor," when she asked him if he understood that his arraignment was being extended.The case includes special circumstance allegations of multiple murders, murder by means of discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle and using a handgun in the commission of the crimes. GOP candidates in districts in Southern California and the Central Valley padded their leads Friday, though thousands of votes remain uncounted. In the 50th District anchored in San Diego County, former Congressman Darrell Issa has opened up a 19,000-vote lead.
