The cougar spotted traveling through Brookfield, Wisconsin last week was caught on video on someone's front porch.Surveillance video shared with Scripps station TMJ4 in Milwaukee by Dan and Bridget Guerndt shows the cougar coming out from trees. The cougar goes up the residents' driveway and puts its paws on the front window.The footage was captured at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, February 18.On Saturday, a Brookfield resident called the Department of Natural Resources when they saw a cougar lying in their backyard, under a pine tree.Though they confirmed the animal was a cougar, officers were unable to neutralize it because of the surrounding homes and thick brush.DNR agents went back to the scene on Sunday morning, but the cougar was gone.The fifty pounds and approximately 1-year-old cougar was tracked, but the trail was lost.Experts believe this cougar was the same one that was spotted in Washington County two weeks ago. 967
The Department of Justice announced Thursday that 57 people have been arrested across the country for fraud related to the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).In a press conference Thursday, officials with the Department of Justice said that the suspects attempted to steal millions of dollars of taxpayer money.The PPP was established in the CARES Act, a stimulus package signed into law in March amid the coronavirus pandemic. The funds were meant to be used by small businesses to keep their businesses afloat.Officials said some of those arrested used the funds to buy "flashy or expensive" luxury items for themselves, rather than use the funds for their businesses. The DOJ also described that some of the suspects were part of "coordinated criminal rings" meant to obtain the funds through fraud.While officials did not put a specific dollar amount on the amount of funds stolen, officials called the number "significant." The FBI continues to warn the American public on cyberattacks and foreign actors who are allegedly working to sow doubt on the upcoming presidential election.This week, the FBI released a statement saying that cyber criminals and foreign actors are attempting to use online platforms to “manipulate public opinion, discredit the electoral process, and undermine confidence in U.S. democratic institutions.”These cyber criminals are hoping to sow doubt on the election by saying that data has been “hacked” or “leaked,” the FBI said. Some voter information is generally publicly available, and doesn’t need to be hacked or leaked. While the ballots themselves are secret, absentee ballot requests, names, addresses and similar information is generally public record.Last week, the FBI said that cybercriminals could take advantage of the likelihood several states will need additional time to count ballots due to increased mail-in voting and social distancing protocols. While a delay in results does not indicate any wrongdoing, the FBI warns that foreign actors could attempt to spread misinformation to cause distrust in the system while votes are being tallied.Last month, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence released a statement outlining efforts by Iran, China and Russia to attempt to undermine this year’s presidential election.“Ahead of the 2020 U.S. elections, foreign states will continue to use covert and overt influence measures in their attempts to sway U.S. voters’ preferences and perspectives, shift U.S. policies, increase discord in the United States, and undermine the American people’s confidence in our democratic process,” William Evanina, director of the United States National Counterintelligence and Security Center, said. "They may also seek to compromise our election infrastructure for a range of possible purposes, such as interfering with the voting process, stealing sensitive data, or calling into question the validity of the election results. However, it would be difficult for our adversaries to interfere with or manipulate voting results at scale.”As part of Evanina’s assessment, he said that China and Iran were attempting to seek a favorable outcome for Biden, while Russia was working to ensure a favorable outcome for Trump.“As Americans, we are all in this together; our elections should be our own,” Evanina previously said. “Foreign efforts to influence or interfere with our elections are a direct threat to the fabric of our democracy. Neutralizing these threats requires not just a whole-of-government approach, but a whole-of-nation effort.”The FBI offered the following recommendations to voters:Seek out information from trustworthy sources, such as state and local election officials; verify who produced the content; and consider their intent.Verify through multiple reliable sources any reports about problems in voting or election results, and consider searching for other reliable sources before sharing such information via social media or other avenues.For information about final election results, rely on state and local government election officials.Report potential election crimes—such as disinformation about the manner, time, or place of voting—to the FBI.If appropriate, make use of in-platform tools offered by social media companies for reporting suspicious posts that appear to be spreading false or inconsistent information about election-related problems or results. 3463
The current spike in COVID-19 cases is stressing the testing system across the country.As the virus spreads at unprecedented rates, more Americans are seeking COVID-19 tests. But in recent days, companies that make the tests and the supplies needed for them are struggling to keep up with demand."Those companies were operating on an allocation basis, and that just means that basically everything they make is going out the door," said Kelly Wroblewski, the Director of Infectious Disease Programs at the Association of Public Health Laboratories. "There is no reserve, so there's an increased demand in a lab for testing. There's no more reagent to be had, so to meet that demand, that lab has to use a different manufacturer's test."Wroblewski adds that along with issues in getting supplies, officials are also short on human resources — there is only so much lab capacity and only so many trained people to conduct the tests.The American Clinical Laboratory Association says the surge in demand for testing means some labs could reach or exceed their current testing capacities soon — meaning it could take longer for patients to get PCR test results back.Wroblewski says that it can take currently take anywhere from 24 hours to a week to get PCR test results back.With antigen tests, patients can get results back in less than 30 minutes. There is currently enough of a supply for antigen tests, but not all facilities offer them.Both lab groups stress that COVID-19 testing is important, but patients should be strategic."There's been a lot of emphasis put on testing, but testing is only one piece of the puzzle," Wroblewski said. "It gives you some information, and if you're not going to do anything with that information — whether it be targeted closures. whether it be staying home and isolating — we're not going to stop the spread of disease."As far as getting more tests, it's going to take a while. Wroblewski says it could take up to six months or more to increase production capacity significantly. Labs don't expect to see a ramp-up in supplies until early 2021. 2090
The global pandemic has changed what “work” looks like for millions of people, and those changes could become permanent, according to workplace and hiring experts.In a report from Glassdoor looking at job trends in 2021 they remind people that moments of crisis, like the coronavirus pandemic, can present risks and opportunities.Some companies have already announced long-term work-from-home opportunities, are embracing mental health and culture-building initiatives, and are scaling back in-person meetings and positions that are in-person focused.Part of the report focused on jobs Glassdoor predicts will either not exist or will be drastically different in the future because of the pandemic.In 2021, lower-skilled service jobs, education jobs, administrative office roles, sales roles and discretionary healthcare jobs could start disappearing. These findings are based on job listings from October 2019 to October 2020, and noticing trends of decreasing job postings during the pandemic that do not show signs of bouncing back.Some of those jobs specifically include beauty consultants, valets, pet groomers, event coordinators, executive assistants, receptionists, sales product demonstrators, product or brand ambassadors and even sales managers.In education, the higher ed system “is facing an overwhelming financial crisis due to falling enrollment and mandated campus closures, and these jobs may not return for a long time.” That includes college professors and instructors, according to Glassdoor.In healthcare, while frontline workers like doctors and nurses are in high demand, other positions are not as some health needs are being postponed or canceled altogether. Jobs for audiologists, opticians and physical therapists are all down.They do predict that jobs like nursing, warehouse worker and e-commerce sector jobs will continue to increase in number in 2021.This lines up with a recent report from the World Economic Forum that predicted about 85 million jobs around the world would become obsolete by 2025 because of the rapid change to automation and remote work during the pandemic.The WEF report also focused on jobs that will rise in the wake of the pandemic. According to the report, by 2025, roles and jobs that leverage human skills will rise in demand.Machines will primarily be focused on information and data processing, administrative tasks and routine manual jobs.The WEF says emerging professions in the next several years will be in data and artificial intelligence, content creation and cloud computing. They also say employers will be looking for these top skills among their employees: analytical thinking, creativity and flexibility.The report from Glassdoor also looked at workplace benefits and initiatives that employees will begin to expect from an employer post-pandemic and how salaries could be impacted by permanent work-from-home changes. 2898
