SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Kristi's a full-time 5th grade teacher and her sister, Heather, is the director of compliance and relations at San Diego State, Heather also runs a small tattoo removal business on the side.When COVID came around, the sisters added even more to their plate."We're both born entrepreneurs and always are thinking about solutions," says Heather.While Heather was creating a COVID training guide for her employees as her small business prepared to reopen, the sisters stumbled upon an idea that could help small business owners navigate some of their own challenges."We started brainstorming and began to go through pieces, did the research and provided a training for her employees and thought,'oh my gosh, if she needs this everyone's going to need this,'" Kristi recalled. That's when Small Business Employee Training was born. Their safety course takes in-depth COVID-19 information, along with CDC guidelines and regulations, and transforms it all into a 30-minute safety course for employees. "In the state of COVID, there was a lot of fear and anxiety around going back to work. How does that happen, what are the requirements," Kristi said.Since the course have became available, over 300 employees have taken the course through their employers."The goal is an employee would enter the workplace, go through a training, and understand what COVID is and how to keep themselves and other safe in the workplace."The course is only and employees receive a certificate of completion afterwards. 1526

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Kreg Van Hoesen has had to fight for his life for much of his life, born with congenital heart defects in 1986 when doctors didn't know until after he was born. Two surgeries at two months of age would be followed by two more at two years old. Then when Kreg was six, doctors tried to correct the defects in his heart. Unfortunately it didn't work. His mother, Pam Van Hoesen remembers every detail of the family's hard fought battle to keep Kreg alive. "His outlook was bleak," she says, "but he managed to get through it and within a week, he got a heart." They know the donor heart came from a family in the Midwest who lost a child traumatically, but they've never heard back from them after writing letters, and they understand. Pam says, "for someone else to lose a child in order for your child to live is mind boggling."To pay forward that most precious gift, the family became champions of organ donation. It started eight years after Kreg got his heart. Pam Van Hoesen's friend needed a kidney. Pam tested and hers was the best match. Then in 2003 Kreg went into kidney failure. The anti-rejection drugs from Kreg's heart transplant were very hard on his kidneys, and when he needed a kidney transplant, his dad Mark stepped in. Kreg initially rejected Mark's kidney however, and he almost lost his battle to survive again. Eventually his body accepted it, and he had 16 years with that kidney. But Kreg's health took a turn for the worse early this year. All three of his sisters tested to find the best match. Kreg's sister Kendyl was the closest match. Kendyl's mother-in-law also happened to be a kidney donor as well, and with both of her own parents living healthy lives with just one kidney, Kendyl didn't hesitate to agree to donate hers to her brother. She explains that the entire family was nervous going into this surgery. They knew as the donor, their family had a long track record of success living with just one kidney, but they worried about how Kreg would do, undergoing his third transplant surgery. "He's a real fighter and real survivor... but most of his surgeries didn't go as planned." It so happens that Kreg was due for success however, and this transplant, which was done at UCSD Medical Center, has been his easiest so far. The family, including Kreg, believe their mission is to get out the word about organ donation. Kreg says he's shocked by how many people are apprehensive about it, whether a living donation, or a donation after someone dies. "I do hope this can change the perspective," he says. 2568

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Less than a week before the election, there are reports of political yard signs being stolen and vandalized, and in some cases, appearing in yards.Sunday night, just before midnight in a cul-de-sac in El Cajon, surveillance video shows a car driving slowly before it stops to let someone out."A shadowy figure, looks young, maybe 10 years old, gets out of the vehicle, runs in, and grabs a political sign," said Brandon Spaulding.Spaulding says the sign being taken belonged to his neighbor and it read "Trump/Pence, Make America Great Again." That same night, Spaulding's sign, which had been vandalized days before, also disappeared.The apparent thieves in the Sunday's thefts: a child and an adult."Very disappointed and frustrated ... being a terrible role model. As parents, you’re supposed to teach children the different between right and wrong. I was always taught to love my country, and part of that is freedom of speech. Respect people's rights to say what they want to say," said Spaulding.Spaulding isn't alone. Local Republican Party officials say they've received more than a 100 reports of stolen Trump signs, a greater number when compared to previous presidential elections.In Coronado, police responded Wednesday to seven homes, where yard signs reading "Racism Lives Here" appeared in front of the homes of Trump supporters who were displaying signs or flags.It isn't just Trump backers being targeted. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds welcomed veterans home Sunday from their honor flight to the nation's capital where they visited war memorials, Arlington National Cemetery and other landmarks.Sixty-four veterans from WWII and the Korean War flew out Friday. The Honor Flights are free for veterans. Each trip costs 0,000 and relies on donations.Joining the veterans are escorts who will spend the weekend supporting the veterans, guiding them and making sure everything goes smoothly.WATCH: Honor Flight San Diego celebrates life of WWII veteran who died on tripThe veterans include Purple Heart recipients, a former German Prisoner of War, a veteran who served on D-day, according to the non-profit.
