SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Sitting in the heart of San Diego, Mission Trails Regional Park has 65 miles of trails, as well as boating and picnic areas. You might call it a hikers and bikers paradise, as it provides eight thousand acres of pure outdoor enjoyment for more than two million visitors each year. "Mission Trails Regional Park is one of the largest urban parks in the country," says Jennifer Morrissey, the Executive Director of the Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation.Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit in mid-March, the park has seen a big increase in visitors, which is great. But it has also created a few problems. "Because we have so many more people," says Morrissey, "we are seeing that there is more wear and tear on the trails."Prior to the pandemic, some of the park's hundreds of volunteers would help maintain the trails. But for the time being, that program has been suspended. "Unfortunately, we don't have volunteers at the park right now. They do everything, from helping on the trails, to staffing the visitors center, to beautification projects. So right now, within the park, there is a lot of work that needs to be done."That work takes money. And that is why Morrissey says 'Giving Tuesday' is the most important fundraiser of the year. "There is a matching progam in place, so that every dollar people give will be matched dollar for dollar by a group of our donors. .Funds that we raise through 'Giving Tuesday' can go towards trail maintenance, restoration, and educational programs we are doing online right now.'While donations are always important, they are even more critical during this pandemic. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Saturday a new curfew went into effect for San Diego businesses, in an attempt to slow the sky-rocketing coronavirus cases across the state.Saturday, the county announced 1,478 new coronavirus cases, the highest number in a single day we've seen. San Diego County's total is now 70,709 cases. Six more people have died from the virus, bringing the local death toll to 966.This alarming rise in cases urged California Governor Gavin Newsom to issue a limited stay-at-home order for counties in the purple tier, shutting all businesses down 10 p.m. - 5 a.m. until Dec. 21.That cuts restaurants down about an hour from the way they were operating prior, according to Mike Hess, founder of Mike Hess Brewing."It gets my crew home earlier, it's just another thing to deal with, it's a month maybe it's longer we'll see, we'll keep going," he said.He's not worried so much about the latest change."This has been the year of hits, I mean it's one after another," Hess said he's concerned about winter weather coming."Heaters are in shortage, you know covered space, you know that kind of thing, it's tough to shelter people on a sidewalk," he said.He's also worried about keeping cans in stock, "there's plenty of aluminum there's just a shortage of manufacturers making cans."He said he's thankful for his incredible team who is taking the punches with him."Everybody says pivot I think it's more than pivot, you have to be flexible," he said.Hess said he's thankful his doors are open and business is good, "production is up this year, we're putting everything in cans so that's been good, and our on-site locations have been doing pretty well this year."Hess longs to bring a sense of community back, "I long for those days when people can mingle and say hey! SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego residents have more access to public parks than other major California cities but parts of the county are falling behind, according to a study by the Equinox Project.78 percent of San Diegans live within a half-mile of a park in city limits, the study showed in an analysis of 2016 data. Overall, the city had almost 35 acres of park land per 1,000 residents.Mayor Faulconer credits proper budgeting as a reason for having so many parks in the city."Our neighborhood parks need to reflect that. That's why it's been important to me to back that up and put the dollars where they're supposed to be going and we're seeing a huge difference," said Faulconer.COUNTY CITIES TRAIL SAN DIEGOThe park land percentages dropped in San Diego County cities with higher low-income populations: Lemon Grove, La Mesa, Vista, and El Cajon.Moms like Nichollette Burrows and Kiara Edwards in Lemon Grove say they usually drive out of their city to look for different options for their children."It definitely makes my husband and I want to move to somewhere that's more kids friendly and already has those amenities," said Burrows. "Almost every time they ask if we can walk to the park, but it's just too far," said Edwards.  1255

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some 4,500 sailors and marines reunited with their families at Naval Base Coronado Friday. Eight months ago, the Amphibious Assault Ship USS Essex and two support ships, the Anchorage and Rushmore, set sail for the Western Pacific and Middle East.The deployment was of historic significance as the military's newest, multi-use fighter jet, the F-35B flew its first combat missions in support of U.S. troops. The Navy reported the jet supported troops in Iraq, Syria and Afghanastan but the exact nature of that support not being divulged at this point. However, the Essex commander confirmed armaments were used by the aircraft.Friday, the primary focus was hugs and kisses. The "official first kisses" involved two young sailors greeting their wives with long embraces. Fathers also met their babies in person for the first time. One dad told 10News it was impossible to put into words how good it felt to hold his new son. The infant, who seemed at ease in his father's arms, then gave a big smile. Sailor Rhett Orth also held his baby girl for first time. His sentiment shared by many, of how hard it is to be away from home but how amazing it feels to be back. His little girl, seemly overwhelmed by the moment herself, began to cry.The two support ships, Anchorage and Rushmore, also returned Friday morning. They docked at Naval Base San Diego. 1378

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Several people were hospitalized after they reportedly fell ill at a Sorrento Valley pharmaceutical company.San Diego Fire-Rescue crews were called to 6769 Mesa Ridge just before 2 p.m. Tuesday to reports that a 60-year-old man was passed out outside the business, Inovio Pharmaceuticals.Bystanders reportedly began CPR and used a defibrillator on the man.Crews say that additional people were transported after falling ill. In all, two people transported themselves to Scripps Memorial Hospital while two others were transported by emergency crews.Their conditions are not known at this time.SDFD said they believe the victims became sick after eating food brought in by an employee.  727
