NEW YORK — New York City residents may not be able to eat inside their favorite restaurant until next year.Restrictions around the rest of the state have been eased, but New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is holding off on lifting restrictions on a number of indoor activities."If folks miss the theater, if they miss, you know, the indoor dining, those things will be back," he said Monday. "They'll be back next year at some point. I think that is overwhelmingly the case."He pointed to indoor dining and drinking at bars as a source of the spread of coronavirus cases around the world, but members of the restaurant industry are outraged.They pointed to a Bronx IHOP just across from a Panera Bread that's in Westchester County. Under current restrictions, the IHOP can't have customers, but the Panera Bread has been seating customers inside for more than a month.NYC Hospitality Alliance Executive Director Andrew Rigie warned that workers' livelihoods are at stake."The other week it was, we may not open until we have a vaccine. Then it's we may not open until the new year," Rigie said.The NYC Hospitality Alliance may pursue legal action over the issue. Rigie pointed to restaurants in just over the Queens-Long Island border in Nassau County that are open for indoor dining."Right now, you can sit indoors at a diner in Nassau county, but basically across the street in Queens, you can't," he said. "You can do the same thing in the Bronx. If you go into Westchester County, people are eating indoors. So is COVID somehow different there? I don't think so."Scott Hart, co-owner of 44 & X in Hell's Kitchen, said he was surprised by de Blasio's remarks on reopening Monday."It just doesn't seem like there was a real plan," he said. "To hear that today makes me feel like I don't know how we're going to make it through the winter."Hart spent money to create an outdoor seating area and is currently operating at 35 percent, but he's worried about the weather since colder temperatures are around the corner."If we close because of cold weather, what are we going to do? Put everybody in furlough again for five months again until spring? NEW YORK — A wealthy benefactor of the disgraced leader of an upstate New York self-improvement group has been sentenced to more than six years in prison in connection with a federal sex slave case.Seagram’s liquor fortune heiress Clare Bronfman appeared in federal court Wednesday in Brooklyn, where a judge handed her an 81-month prison sentence. She was immediately taken into custody to begin her sentence. Bronfman's lawyers wanted her to get only three years of probation, but prosecutors said she deserves five years behind bars for her support of Keith Raniere.Raniere was convicted of charges last year accusing him of turning some of his followers into sex slaves branded with his initials.Raniere is known as the leader of the group NXIVM. Prosecutors say the organization operated like a cult, in which members formed a secret sorority comprised of brainwashed female “slaves” who were forced to have sex with Raniere.Long affiliated with NXIVM, Bronfman reportedly provided millions of dollars to bankroll Raniere and his program of self-improvement classes and paid for lawyers to defend the group against a lawsuit filed by critics.Last year, Bronfman admitted in a guilty plea that she harbored someone who was living in the U.S. illegally for “labor and services.” She also claimed to have committed credit card fraud on behalf of Raniere.Bronfman’s lawyers argued that she deserved leniency because she didn’t have direct involvement with the most disturbing allegations in the case, but prosecutors said she deserved severe punishment because Raniere likely couldn’t have gotten away with what he did without her. 1640

NEW YORK -- An officer with the New York Police Department was suspended Sunday night after viral video showed police use an apparent chokehold on the boardwalk in Far Rockaway.Four officers were on top of the man and one officer had his arm wrapped around the man. The officer got up after another officer tapped him on the back and appeared to pull at the back of his shirt."While a full investigation is still underway, there is no question in my mind that this immediate action is necessary," NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said.Mayor Bill de Blasio said it was the fastest he'd ever seen the NYPD discipline an officer."This is how it needs to be," he said. "The officer who intervened to stop his colleague did exactly the right thing. I commend him. That is what we need to see from all our officers."Lori Zeno, the man's attorney, said she thinks her client would have been choked to death if the officer hadn't been stopped.After the video surfaced, an NYPD spokesperson said it was being taken "extremely seriously" and that there was an active investigation underway by the Internal Affairs Bureau.Police got a call for a man being disorderly on the boardwalk near Beach 113th Street on Sunday morning, officials said. It's not clear what the NYPD intends to charge him with, but the man's attorney said it's the suspended police officer who should be charged."He's an idiot and he's a bad cop and he needs to go," Zeno said. "He needs to get fired and needs to get prosecuted."Mayoral spokesperson Freddi Goldstein called the video "very concerning.""We’re glad the NYPD is immediately launching an investigation to get to the bottom of what happened," she said.Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said her office is also investigating."There must be zero tolerance for police misconduct," she tweeted. "The Queens District Attorney's Office is aware of the incident in Far Rockaway today. New data shows that those who use Duolingo — a popular language app — can learn the equivalent of four semesters of university study. The app is free for all, and parents and teachers say it is a good supplement for students of all ages who are learning from home this fall.Averill, 10, is quite the Duolingo master. Her Spanish teacher recommended the app to pair with her in class lessons a few years back. Averill took that one step further.She's currently learning Korean. When she masters that, it will be her third language."My dad is Korean, and so my grandparents speak Korean," Averill said. "I'm trying to learn it because we're planning a trip to Korea to visit some relatives and I'm trying to learn it so I can speak to them a little bet,ter than I can right now."She likes to take what she's learned and practice on her grandparents. So far, she says, she's doing pretty well.Korean and Spanish are two of the 39 featured languages on Duolingo. North Korea has been sending supplies to Syria that could be used to produce chemical weapons, a United Nations Security Council diplomat has told CNN.Speaking on condition of anonymity, the diplomat said that North Korea had sent acid-resistant tiles, valves and thermometers to Syria.
