OCEANSIDE, Calif. - A U.S. Border Patrol agent was arrested in North San Diego County on suspicion of possessing heroin and a short-barrel rifle, Oceanside Police reported Tuesday.Officers were patrolling an apartment complex on Los Arbolitos Blvd. where a suspicious person had been reported last week. That's when they reportedly found Brandon Herrera. He was passed out in the driver’s seat of a Ford pickup truck parked on a nearby street, police said.Oceanside Police said they found more than five grams of heroin and a weapon at the scene.The U.S. Border Patrol confirmed with Scripps station KGTV in San Diego it is gathering information about the report.Herrera is due in court April 17. 719

Oceanside may convert two of its elected city positions into City Council appointed ones, leading to concerns that the city is taking key decisions away from voters. The Oceanside City Council will decide Wednesday whether it should have the authority to appoint the City Clerk and City Treasurer. The city says the positions have become “significantly more complex” due to state laws and regulations. “Both positions perform critical City functions, and they require specialized education and experience to property discharge their many duties that likely cannot be properly achieved (or guaranteed) via an elected position.” The City Treasurer position has been a controversial one in Oceanside. In 2016, incumbent Gary Ernst died just weeks before the election, leaving Oceanside resident Nadine Scott as the lone living person on the ballot. (KGTV) -- A woman was killed Monday after police said she was run over by heavy machinery at an Oceanside beach.The incident was reported shortly after 10 a.m. in the 1200 block of North Pacific, Street, near Oceanside’s South Harbor, according to an Oceanside Police Department spokesperson.The spokesperson said the woman, who was not identified, was asleep on the beach when the equipment hit her. No other people were struck.Police told ABC 10News the heavy machinery was at the beach as part of a dredging project at the harbor. 559

(KGTV) -- A family of out-of-state vacationers was displaced after a dryer in the home they were renting caught fire.Firefighters were called to the home, located on the 1000 block of South Pacific Street, shortly after midnight Sunday.After arriving, firefighters discovered that a clothes dryer near a downstairs bedroom of the home was on fire.Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the flames, but not before a woman in her 60s suffered smoke inhalation.Crews say seven adults and none children staying in the two-unit home were displaced by the fire.Firefighters from Camp Pendleton, Vista and Carlsbad assisted.
