SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Vandals damaged a park in Sabre Springs Thursday night, dumping sand into toilets and scrawling inappropriate graffiti on the walls. Trash cans were emptied out and piles of wood chips were dumped along the entrance to the South Creek Neighborhood Park. The clogged toilets and sinks caused minor flooding in the bathrooms. Some of the plumbing was also damaged, according to the San Diego Police Department. City crews cleaned up the mess by the afternoon. Police were still searching for the culprits Friday. 537

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A trip to a dog park in Ocean Beach ended in a hospital visit for one San Diego couple.“I want her to go to jail, she assaulted my husband, and I’m angry about it,” said Ash O’Brien.O'Brien said she and her husband were at Dusty Rhodes Dog Park in Ocean Beach Thursday afternoon with their three-month-old puppy. They sat at a picnic table and began enjoying a meal when a woman reportedly confronted them for not wearing facial coverings and eating at the park where there is a no food policy.The confrontation ended with O’Brien’s husband being pepper-sprayed by the woman.“If we knew there was a no food policy, we wouldn’t have brought it into the park,” said O’Brien. “The lady who maced him automatically started saying stuff about us not wearing a mask when we were social distancing; there was no one near us.”O’Brien said that after exchanging words, the woman walked away from the picnic table but returned after a few minutes and did the unexpected.“She just came up without saying anything and just stuck the mace can right in front of my face,” said O’Brien.“My husband, being a good guy, walked in front of her and was like ‘hey calm down please don’t do this’ and then she grabbed him and just starting macing him, she used the entire can on him.”“We drove to the hospital, he got treated and everything,” said O’Brien.O’Brien said the pepper spray got on her arms and started to burn, while her husband was sprayed in the face.A witness captured part of the incident on camera and told ABC 10News she was shocked at what she was seeing. She recorded the woman’s license plate number.The couple filed a police report with the San Diego Police Department. The department confirmed they took a misdemeanor battery report but could not immediately provide further details.O’Brien was thankful none of the dogs at the park were injured by the pepper spray and wants the woman to be held accountable for the incident.“People don’t need to be getting assaulted for not wearing a mask in a public outdoor area,” she said. 2055

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – With just hours until Election Day, several local law enforcement agencies are already on high-alert in the event that large demonstrations arise."We are comfortable with the staffing level we have for [Tuesday] and into the weekend,” SDPD Lieutenant Shawn Takeuchi told ABC10 News on Monday and added, “We're monitoring social media and any information available to the public about any groups that are planning to protest or celebrate.” He said San Diego Police Department is well prepared for any potential unrest although officers have no credible knowledge of plans for it. On Tuesday, SDPD will open its Department Operations Center (DOC) which is only activated during major events as a hub to filter and disseminate intelligence. “We are not fully staffing the DOC. We are putting it on a monitoring status [and] we feel that's prudent given the climate that we're in,” he added.“I think anxieties are very high all over the country,” San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore told ABC10 News on Monday. He said that his Department will be adequately staffed. “We fully respect everyone's right to peacefully demonstrate [and] to express their first amendment rights. However, when those peaceful demonstrations cross that line into criminal activity, deputy sheriffs and local law enforcement will be ready to act to keep everybody in the crowd safe so that they can express their legitimate first amendment rights,” he added.On Monday, California Highway Patrol told ABC10 News that its officers are being moved to 12 hour shifts. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Unintentional fentanyl overdose deaths increased by nearly 70 percent in 2019, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner. From January through June of 2019, 69 people died from the overdoses, compared to 41 during the same time period in 2018. The number indicates a 68 percent jump, the report shows.
