WASHINGTON – The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is introducing a new Purple Heart Medal Forever stamp this month.The Forever stamp will go on sale nationwide on Oct. 4 and will be issued in self-adhesive sheets of 20.Like the Purple Heart Medal, the USPS says the stamp will honor the members of the U.S. military who have been wounded or killed in action. The Purple Heart Medal has a long history that starts with George Washington, who established the Badge of Military Merit during the Revolutionary War. It was discontinued after the war, but reinstated with a new design in 1932, the 200th anniversary of Washington’s birth. The new Forever stamp is a redesign that features a purple border that matches the brilliant purple of the medal and its ribbon. Customers can purchase the stamp through The Postal Store at 829
Two drivers in Oregon were killed in a crash that was blamed on icy roads early Monday.Oregon State Police said two commercial trailers collided and a fire broke out on the Newberg-Dundee Bypass in the northern part of the state near Portland. A third driver was injured in the crash after she was unable to stop her car and hit the back of one of the trailers. The woman was taken to a hospital after sustaining minor injuries.The Oregon crash comes as cities along the west coast battle dangerous weather conditions. Flooding, mudslides and snow closed several highways in California over the weekend. And widespread rain is expected to continue pouring over the state with new flood threats and heavy mountain snow expected to move in.The California Department of Transportation reopened the Pacific Coast Highway to traffic Monday from south of Encinal Canyon Road in Malibu to Las Posas Road in Ventura County. WEST PALM BEACH, Florida — Python hunters continue to remove invasive snakes from Florida, and they seem to be getting bigger.The Big Cypress National Preserve in Ochopee, Florida, posted on its Facebook page Friday, April 5, that hunters caught a female snake more than 17 feet long, and it weighed 140 pounds. The massive python also contained 73 developing eggs.Officials said this is the largest python ever removed from Big Cypress National Preserve and that it was caught using radio transmitters. The picture posted on Facebook shows it took four people to hold up the behemoth.Using male pythons with transmitters, it allows the hunters to track the male to find the breeding females.In this instance, it led the hunters to a record-breaking snake. Big Cypress says its team is not only removing the invasive snakes, but collecting research data, developing new removal tools and learning how the pythons are using the Preserve.The Facebook post said hunters have been able to locate and remove several breeding female pythons in the past few months.
