Disney and Verizon are engaged in a high-stakes spat over programming fees, threatening to knock ESPN, ABC and other Disney-owned channels off of Fios' TV network. If the two companies don't come to terms by 5 pm ET on December 31, Verizon will stop carrying Disney channels. ABC affiliates would also be blocked for Fios customers in New York and Philadelphia. The dispute had remained behind closed doors for months but spilled out to the public this week after Disney began running ads on TV. The commercials said ABC and ESPN could be blacked out in January, preventing some Fios customers from watching the Rose Bowl, some NFL playoff games and other sports programming."Our proven history of providing extraordinary value to consumers and distributors is unmatched," an ESPN spokeswoman said in a statement. "Our negotiations continue in earnest and we remain optimistic that we can reach a deal."Verizon ( 922
Duke superstar freshman Zion Williamson surprised no one on Monday by announcing that he will forego college for this summer's NBA Draft. With his announcement, Williamson is expected to be drafted first in this year's draft, no matter which team gets the No. 1 selection. The NBA Draft Lottery will be held next month, and with it, the opportunity to land the most coveted prospect since LeBron James. The New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavs and Phoenix Suns equally have the best chance of landing Williamson at 14 percent. All other teams that did not make this year's NBA Playoffs are also in the lottery for the No. 1 selection. Williamson, who helped lead Duke to a spot in this year's Elite Eight, average 23 points and nine rebounds a game. Unlike Williamson, James was able to bypass college and go directly to the NBA after high school. Since then the NBA has implemented a rule that essentially bars players from coming straight out of high school. While his freshman year was a success, Williamson's shoes became a national story -- one that might have cost Nike millions of dollars. During a nationally televised game versus North Carolina, Williamson blew out his shoe, causing an injury which sidelined him for five games. In a video announcing his decision, Williamson thanked Duke and called the last year the greatest year of his life. 1363
Close calls between drones and airplanes are on the rise. Researchers now say drones could be more deadly than collisions with birds.Pilot Jake Fredericks was coming in for a landing when he says a drone shot up right in front of him, coming up through the clouds when he was on instrument approach. He estimates it was only 200 feet in front of him."I felt like my life flashed before my eyes, you know if we would have hit that thing, that could have potentially been death for us," he said.Pilot Jeff Munford told us last year about his close call with a drone as he flew over the Georgia-Florida line. Nationwide, reports of drone sightings by pilots has shot up nearly 91 percent since 2015.FAA rules prohibit people from flying drones within five miles of an airport or above 400 feet without permission. The I-Team found Florida pilots reported 288 close calls with drones last year, including two dozen in the Tampa Bay area.Kevin Poorman of the University of Dayton's research institute has been doing bird strike testing for more than two decades. His researchers fired both a replica bird and a two pound drone at a wing."If you look from the exterior, it looks like the bird does more external damage, but the drone had the ability to immediately puncture right through and carry farther to do more damage," Poorman said. "If you go to a 10 pound drone, that's five times the energy."Pilot and Drone instructor Jason Lorenzon believes it's important to teach drone pilots the rules of the sky, especially as the FAA expects the number of drones to approach 3 million by 2022."You can go and pick one of these up off Amazon and it doesn't come with that extensive of a pilot operating handbook, let alone rules of the national airspace system. How do you expect Joe Consumer who just purchased it to know the rules?" he said. 1845
