EDINBURGH, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan said Friday during a visit to Scotland that China hopes to strengthen cooperation with Scotland, especially in the areas of education, culture, tourism and finance.     Wang, who is on an official visit to Britain, spoke during a meeting with Alex Salmond, Scotland's first minister.     Both sides praised the friendship between China and Scotland and expressed a readiness to strengthen their cooperation as part of an effort to promote the all-round strategic partnership between China and Britain.     During the meeting, the two also exchanged views on how to tackle the global financial crisis.     "Currently we should further strengthen confidence in the market and recover the functions of the financial market as soon as possible," Wang said.     After the outbreak of the Asian financial crisis, China adopted a series of measures that pulled it through the trouble and helped to maintain the stability of the financial market, Wang said.     Salmond spoke highly of the economic stimulus packages arranged by the Chinese government to tackle the current financial crisis.     Wang arrived at Edinburgh on Friday after a visit to the Europe Union

BEIJING, April 22 (Xinhua) -- China and Pakistan Wednesday praised the ties between their parliaments and both agreed to raise inter-parliamentary cooperation to a higher level.     In his meeting with visiting Speaker of Pakistan's National Assembly Fahmida Mirza, Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo noted that China always conducted its ties with Pakistan taking a strategic, long-term perspective and was committed to pushing forward bilateral relations.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), the top legislature, highlighted the growth of bilateral relations and expressed appreciation for Pakistan's support for China on issues relating to Taiwan and Tibet. BEIJING, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-nine large and medium-sized Chinese steel producers reported 5.18 billion yuan (762.46 million U.S. dollars) in aggregate losses in the first four months, the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) said here Friday.     The 29 producers were among 72 surveyed by CISA, the association's vice chairman, Luo Bingsheng, said.     The 72 companies reported 575.59 billion yuan in revenue, down 18.9 percent year on year, Luo said. They paid 15.42 billion yuan in taxes, down 85.07 percent year on year, Luo said.     Losses were mainly caused by slumping domestic steel prices, Luo said.     Many producers have cut costs, and the production cost of steel dropped 13.75 percent in the first quarter, Luo said.

JOHANNESBURG, April 22 (Xinhua) -- South Africa's progress of the fourth democratic elections proceeded smoothly and orderly despite the cold weather.     Cheerful voters braved a cold snap in South Africa's most fluid and unpredictable post-apartheid elections on Wednesday, with KwaZulu-Natal province the only to report major problems.     It had received reports that 19,121 of the 19,726 voting stations opened on time, the South African Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said.     IEC Chief Electoral Officer Pansy Tlakula said most of those which did not open were temporary stations affected by problems like the weather. She said the elections were characterized by a "peaceful, tranquil and harmonious" atmosphere. ROME, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano on Monday, calling for a boost to ties between the two countries.     During the talks, Hu said Chinese-Italian relations have witnessed healthy and stable expansion over the past 39 years since the two countries established diplomatic relations. In 2004, the two countries agreed to establish an all-around strategic partnership, unveiling a new page for Chinese-Italian friendly cooperation, Hu said.     As next year will mark the 40th anniversary of the forging of bilateral diplomatic relations, China is willing to join hands with Italy to lift bilateral ties to a higher level, Hu said. He noted that China's participation is a must for the international community in its move to tackle the crisis, reform the international financial system and realize sustainable development.     On the EU-China relations, Napolitano said Italy would continue to play an active role in boosting the ties.     The president also reiterated Italy's adherence to the one-China policy.     According to the press release, Hu also briefed his Italian counterpart on the latest social and economic developments in China.     The two leaders held the talks at the Quirinal Palace, and Napolitano hosted a grand welcoming ceremony in honor of Hu prior to the talks.     Hu arrived in Rome earlier on Sunday for a state visit at the invitation of Napolitano.     Hu was also to attend the summit of the Group of Eight and major developing countries later this week in the central Italian city of L'Aquila.     This is the sixth time that the Chinese president has attended the G8 outreach session.
