RICHMOND, Ind. — Nearly 77 years after a Marine from Indiana was killed in the South Pacific during World War II his remains will return to his hometown on Thursday.Marine Corps Pfc. Louis Wiesehan Jr., 20, of Richmond, was a member of Company F, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, which landed against stiff Japanese resistance on the small island of Betio in the Tarawa Atoll of the Gilbert Islands in November 1943, according to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.Over several days of intense fighting, approximately 1,000 Marines and Sailors were killed and more than 2,000 wounded. The Japanese were virtually annihilated, the DPAA said. Wiesehan was killed on the second day of the battle, Nov. 21, 1943. His remains were reportedly buried in Division Cemetery on Betio Island.According to the DPAA, the 604th Quartermaster Graves Registration Company centralized all of the American remains found on Tarawa at Lone Palm Cemetery in 1946 for later repatriation, however, almost half of the known casualties were never found. No recovered remains could be associated with Wiesehan so in Oct. 1949, a Board of Review declared him "non-recoverable."In 2014, History Flight Inc., a nonprofit organization, located Cemetery 27. Excavations at the site uncovered multiple sets of remains which were turned over to DPAA in 2015. DPAA said Wiesehan's remains were identified through anthropological analysis as well as material evidence. Scientists from the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System used mitochondrial DNA analysis.Wiesehan's remains were accounted for on Sept. 23, 2019.The Greenfield Police Department posted on Facebook that Wiesehan's remains will be passing through Greenfield on Thursday, between 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. on their way from the Indianapolis International Airport to Richmond. The escort is scheduled to come from Mount Comfort Road along U.S. 40 through town. This story was first reported by Bob Blake at WRTV in Indianapolis, Indiana. 1996

SACRAMENTO (KGTV) -- As summer travel heats up, California's gas tax is rising again on July 1. The 5.6 cent increase per gallon comes as GasBuddy reports that prices in the rest of the country could fall below by the end of the year. The gas tax hike also comes amid reports of an increased number of bridges around the state in poor condition. RELATED: Newsom proposes plan to withhold gas tax funds from cities that don't meet housing requirementsSB1 was signed into law by then Governor Jerry Brown in 2017 and increased the gas tax by 12 cents per gallon and registration fees by as much as 5.In November of 2018, an effort to repeal the gas tax increase, Proposition 6, failed to pass in a statewide vote."The test of American strength is whether we defeat this stupid repeal measure which is nothing more than a Republican stunt to get a few of their losers returned to Congress," Brown said of the repeal effort at a 2018 event. Those who support the taxes say they're estimated to generate billion over a decade. 1040

Rioters torched a Georgia Tech police car Monday night as students protested the death of 21-year-old Scout Schultz, who was shot and killed by a Georgia Tech police officer Saturday night. After a vigil for Schultz Monday evening, a smaller group of about 50 protesters marched to the Georgia Tech Police Department. Two officers were injured during the unrest. The incident promoted Georgia Tech to issue an alert, advising students to stay indoors.Georgia Tech police officers approached Schultz Saturday night after responding to a 911 call that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation later learned came from Schultz.According to the GBI, Officer Tyler Beck shot Schultz after the student refused to comply with police commands to drop a weapon.Investigators said they found three suicide notes located in Schultz's dorm room.Schultz's parents talked with reporters Monday, demanding answers over the death of their child.Georgia Tech says the Atlanta Police Department and Georgia State University Police Department helped to restore order after the Monday night incident. Vincent Castillenti, Jacob Wilson and Cassandra Monden were all arrested and charged with inciting a riot and battery of an officer, according to the school.Schultz' parents issued the following statement on behalf of their attorney after the incident: 'On behalf of the family of Scout Schultz, we ask that those who wish to protest Scout's death do so peacefully. Answering violence with violence is not the answer. Our goal is to work diligently to make positive change at Georgia Tech in an effort to ensure a safer campus for all students. This is how we will truly honor Scout's life and legacy.Scout's family respects the rights of those who wish to voice opposition to what they feel was an unnecessary use of force, but they ask that it be done respectfully and safely."Georgia Tech President G.P. "Bud" Peterson sent the following letter to the Georgia Tech community on Tuesday morning: 1977

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California has recorded a half-million coronavirus cases in the last two weeks, overwhelming hospitals in urban centers and rural areas. Gov. Gavin Newsom says a projection model shows California could have 100,000 hospitalizations in the next month. Mobile field hospitals are being set up outside facilities to supplement available bed space. At least three are being set up in the Los Angeles and Orange County area, which hit 0% ICU bed availability last week. Other "alternative care" facilities, as the governor refers to them, have been set up near Sacramento and along the Mexican border about 50 miles east of San Diego.“The ICU is at 105% capacity,” Orange County Supervisor Doug Chaffee said of St. Jude. “They’re using every available bed. The emergency department has an overflow ... All the Orange County hospitals are in the same situation. It is dire, so they’ll soon be erecting a tent in the parking lot, probably for triage. I think what we’re seeing is not a surge, but a tsunami.”The governor says he’s likely to extend his stay-at-home order for much of the state. He acknowledged the orders for the Southern California and San Joaquin Valley regions will probably be extended. The orders remain in place for three weeks, and are triggered when a region's available ICU bed capacity dips below 15%. Both of those regions, which combined cover 23 of 58 counties and the lower half of the state, have an ICU bed availability level of 0% according to the California Department of Public Health. The San Francisco Bay area has an ICU bed availability of 13.7%, it's at 16.2% in the Sacramento region and 28.7% in Northern California. 1686
