BEIJING, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) official Zhou Yongkang has called for efforts to promote a police campaign aimed at better addressing public complaints.Zhou, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks in a written instruction on the campaign launched by the Ministry of Public Security on Friday.During the six-month campaign, police will be sent to more households to settle disputes and complaints or help solve public problems. The public will also be invited to supervise the work of the police, according to the ministry.Zhou said he believed the campaign would cement ties between the police and the masses and called on police to build a positive image for themselves during the initiative. The desirable "positive image" would only be possible by promptly addressing those most-attended security issues, said Meng Jianzhu, minister of public security, at Friday's launching ceremony.Meng urged his fellow police officers to make solid progress in enhancing the public's sense of security through this campaign.Police services on household registration, exit & entry, traffic and fire fighting were specifically mentioned by Meng, which were instructed to be strengthened or improved.

BEIJING, Oct. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- The average global land temperature has increased by around one degree Cetigrade since the mid-1950s, American scientists announced last week after reviewing historical temperature records to date.According to media reports, the scientists of the Berkeley Earth project have studied more than a billion temperature records dating back to the 1800s from 15 sources around the world. And the result is in line with the estimate made by major institutions which keep official records on the global climate, including the Nasa's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in the US and the Met Office's Hadley Centre in Britain.Meanwhile, the scientists established an open database for the climate records so that skeptics on climate change can assess climage change on their own.Nevertheless, the finding of the scientists at the University of California, Berkeley did not convince climate change skeptics, according to a New York Times report.Anthony Watts, one prominent US skeptics, claimed the study's "methodology was flawed". He also noted that the finding was submitted to journal Geophysical Research Letters before being peer-reviewed.Richard Muller, a physicist and head of the project, argued that the decision to circulate the papers before publication was part a long-standing academic tradition of sanity-checking results with colleagues. He added, cited by the Guardian, "We will get much more feedback from making these papers public before publication."
BEIJING, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- China will launch its first-ever high-resolution geological mapping satellite for civil purposes next January, according to official sources. The Ziyuan III satellite will be launched aboard a Long March 4B carrier rocket from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in northern China's Shanxi province, according to a conference held on Monday for the directors of surveying, mapping and geoinformation administrations across the nation. The Ziyuan III's surveying covers the entire area between 84 degrees north latitude and 84 degrees south latitude. The satellite will be used to conduct geological mapping, carry out surveys on land resources, help with natural disaster-reduction and prevention, and lend assistance to farming, water conservation, urban planning and other sectors. The Ziyuan III satellite project was inaugurated on March 2008, and also includes gravity satellites, radar satellites and follow-up satellites for the Ziyuan III, so as to obtain geoinformation under all kinds of meteorological conditions.
BEIJING, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Pharmaceutical producers will risk having their operation license revoked if they use prohibited chemicals as medicine ingredients or involved in fake drug production, China's drug regulator said in a circular Saturday. The State Food and Drug Administration said it would name and shame pharmaceutical companies if they make phoney medicine and withdraw the operation licenses of pharmacies if they intentionally sell unqualified drugs. The circular came in the wake of several counterfeit medicine scandals uncovered by Chinese police in the past few months. On Nov. 4, police seized more than 65 million imitation medicinal tablets and arrested 114 suspects in a cross-provincial raid on counterfeit drugs. In October, police raided on an illegal drug production and sale network and ended up with the seizure of 190 million yuan (29.9 million U.S. dollars) worth of counterfeit drugs. The suspects were found to have used starch or corn powder as ingredients for bogus medicine, or re-packaged expired pharmaceuticals.Police also found animal feed and chemical pigments in the counterfeit products.
