(AP) -- Lowe's Cos. is laying off thousands of employees at its U.S. stores as it outsources some of their duties to outside companies.The home-improvement chain, based in Mooresville, North Carolina, declined to say exactly how many employees were affected. But The Wall Street Journal reported that thousands of employees were told this week that their jobs were eliminated, which the company confirmed.Lowe's spokeswoman Jackie Pardini Hartzell said Thursday that the cuts are coming as the company moves to third-party assemblers and facility services to allow store associates to spend more time on the sales floor serving customers. Previously some store workers did assembly work, such a constructing floor models, and janitorial work. Hartzell said that employees in these positions will have the opportunity to apply for other open roles at Lowe's.She said the company is not disclosing how many are affected as the number of employees impacted varies by store and the company has a strong track record of retaining associates in other roles within the company.Lowe's, under its relatively new CEO Marvin Ellison, is trying to return its focus to its home improvement chain and streamline its business.After Ellison took the reins last year, he thinned executive positions at the company and began paring away weaker selling items in its stores. Lowe's also sold announced last summer that it was closing the 99 Orchard Supply Hardware stores it owns in California, Florida and Oregon. San Diego (KGTV)- Starting today, additional background checks are now required for people to buy ammunition. The system roll-out is leaving some store owners frustrated. "It's going to be a lot harder for us to come in and buy ammo," says customer George Garcia. The state law went into effect today, but it wasn't until 7 a.m. that the software went live. "It is frustrating because we had to wait until the day of for the law to go into effect and the system to be in place," says Danielle Rudolph, Director of Sales Operations at Poway Weapons and Gear Range. "Then we still have to train staff properly." The store must keep a record of the sales for five years. The customer must have California drivers license or ID and pay an additional fee before they can even get their hands on the ammo. "The basic ammunition eligibility check Is a dollar every time you buy. That is for people who have purchased firearms in California before," says Rudolph. "Then there's the standard one, that is . That is for anybody that has not purchased a firearm in California."Some activists believe the new law could save lives. A statement from San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention says in part: "This will help to prevent felons and those with illegal firearms from getting quick and easy access to high quantities of bullets, while allowing responsible gun owners who pass background checks to continue to purchase bullets."They also say the new law will make it harder for those planning mass shootings to stock up on ammunition. 1539

(AP) -- McDonald's is suing Steve Easterbrook, the CEO it ousted last year over an inappropriate relationship with an employee, alleging he covered up relationships with other employees and destroyed evidence.Easterbrook told the company that there were no other similar instances.McDonald's says in a lawsuit that it has since become aware of sexual relationships between Easterbrook and three other employees prior to his termination.The company also says Easterbrook approved a special stock grant for one of those employees worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.An Associated Press message seeing comment was left with Easterbrook's attorney. 655
