During a press gaggle at the White House on Monday, President Donald Trump said he's set a deadline of "around" Sept. 15 for TikTok's parent company to sell the rights to its U.S. business, and suggested that the sale include a payment to the U.S. Treasury. In his comments, Trump suggested that the short-form video app would be "out of business in the United States" if the company isn't sold by the deadline. He also said he suggested that any potential sale of the app should include a payment to the United States."A very substantial portion of that price is going to have to come into the Treasury of the United States because we're making it possible for this deal to happen," Trump said. "Right now, they don't have any rights unless we give it to them. So, if we're going to give them the rights, then it has to come into this county."It's a little bit like the landlord-tenant," Trump added. "Without a lease, the tenant has nothing. So, they pay what's called key money, or they pay something. But the United States should be reimbursed or should be paid a substantial amount of money."TikTok, a wildly popular social media app, is currently owned by ByteDance, a company based in Beijing. Some cybersecurity experts believe the app's terms of service could allow the Chinese government access to millions of Americans' personal data.On Sunday, Microsoft said it was in talks with ByteDance to acquire the U.S. rights to the business.Earlier this year, TikTok users took credit for reserving millions of tickets to a Trump rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Despite the millions of ticket requests, the event only drew an estimated 6,000 people, leaving the arena half empty. 1683

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The United Arab Emirates has announced a major liberalization of the country’s Islamic personal laws, allowing unmarried couples to cohabitate, loosening alcohol restrictions and criminalizing so-called “honor killings.” The broadening of personal freedoms reflects the changing profile of a country that has sought to bill itself as a skyscraper-studded destination for Western tourists, fortune-seekers and businesses despite its legal system based on a hard-line interpretation of Islamic law. Saturday's announcement also follows a historic U.S.-brokered deal to normalize relations between the UAE and Israel, which is expected to bring an influx of Israeli tourists and investment. The moves come as the UAE gets ready to host the high-stakes World Expo. 803
Dr. Anthony Fauci told NBC News on Wednesday that he is concerned that the United States could see a spike in coronavirus cases if Americans aren’t cautious for the upcoming holiday weekend.Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said that there were a number of cases tied to the Memorial Day and Fourth of July holidays. While coronavirus cases generally declined in the US in the weeks following Memorial Day, there was a sizeable surge in cases in the weeks following the Fourth of July."Wear a mask, keep social distancing, avoid crowds," Fauci told NBC News about the upcoming weekend. "You can avoid those kind of surges. You don't want to be someone who's propagating the outbreak. You want to be part of the solution, not part of the problem."Holiday gatherings have been a concern for some public health experts amid the pandemic. While Labor Day is the last major warm-weather holiday of the year, concerns following Labor Day will begin to shift to the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Dr. Christopher Murray, the director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, said he is opting not to see extended relatives amid the pandemic. And looking forward to the holiday season, Murray does not plan on seeing extended relatives then, either.“Personally, in our family, we will not have our family get together,” Murray said. “I am particularly cautious. That would be our strategy. But Fauci is hopeful that by the end of the year, some Americans will begin getting coronavirus vaccinations."I believe that by the time we get to the end of this calendar year, that we will feel comfortable that we do have a safe and effective vaccine," he told NBC News. 1757
