LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — When parents dropped off their kids during Lakeside Union School District's in-person summer school, the teachers noticed some of the youngest students were uneasy. The district includes some 5,200 students from transitional kindergarten up to 8th grade."Kids would say, 'I'm nervous. I'm anxious.' They weren't able to put language to it. Just knew something was wrong," said Dr. Kim Reed, an assistant superintendent for the district.Reed believes many other students also have those feelings, amid the isolation and other stressors hitting families during the pandemic. In response, the district will build a "social-emotional" component into the curriculum this fall."What we mean by "social-emotional" is really the kids' well-being, connectivity to peers and teachers, feelings of safety," said Reed.After training with counseling staff, teachers will — for about 20 to 30 minutes a day — leading virtual discussions with their students."Every student has a chance to have their voice heard ... every day, a group coming together for lessons on how to talk about, how to manage those worries and fears," said Reed.Reed says separately, teachers can include social-emotional learning in the lesson plan, if, for example, the topic of the pandemic will be coming up."Kids can't learn when they're afraid ... Our strategy is to address the social-emotional needs as a foundation and address their academic needs. We feel we'll then be meeting the needs of the whole child," said Reed.Reed says their social-emotional learning will be a mainstay, even when in-person classes resume,"We're hoping to do give students the skills to meet the challenge of our more complicated world," said Reed.The teachers union will be voting on some aspects of the social-emotional plan. LAKELAND, Fla. — A Polk County judge denied bond Saturday to a Lakeland, Florida city commissioner facing a second-degree murder charge for the deadly shooting of a suspected shoplifter.Commissioner Michael Dunn will remain held without bond at the Polk County Jail, the judge ruled.Dunn was indicted by a grand jury Friday.The commissioner is accused of fatally shooting 50-year-old Christobal Lopez at Dunn's business, Vets Army & Navy Surplus store in Lakeland, Florida, October 3. Dunn suspected Lopez was trying to leave the store without paying for an item.Surveillance video of the shooting shows Dunn shoot 50-year-old Christobal Lopez, who was pronounced dead on scene.According to statements, Lopez entered the store with his father. As his father was making a purchase, Dunn reportedly witnessed Lopez trying to steal a hatchet. Dunn stopped him and asked if he was going to pay for the item, then a confrontation ensued.Dunn is a co-owner of the store.Lopez family’s attorney, Adam Kemp, released the following statement, prior to Dunn's arrest: 1109

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Several streets were shut down in La Mesa Sunday morning after someone reportedly opened fire at a motorcyclist. Police say the shooting happened around 3 a.m. at the intersection of University Avenue and Marian Street. According to police, someone fired at least three shots at the motorcyclist, causing him to crash into a nearby fence. The motorcyclist wasn’t hit with gunfire during the shooting, but police say he was taken to the hospital with leg injuries due to the crash. At this time police are searching for a dark-colored sedan last seen heading east on University after the shooting. 631

LEMON GROVE (KGTV) - Fire crews snuffed out a brush fire near Imperial Avenue and San Altos Place in Lemon Grove Sunday evening. Heartland Fire said the blaze started shortly after 5 p.m. when a palm tree caught fire near trolley tracks. Trolley service was disrupted near the Massachusetts Avenue station and busses were used to transport passengers.The fire threatened about 20 homes, and no one was evacuated. Some power lines were damaged, along with railroad ties to the trolley. The fire also damaged a residential fence and the eaves of a few homes.Nobody was injured in the fire, which was contained in about 40 minutes by several fire crews, including a water-dropping helicopter.The San Diego Sheriff's Bomb and Arson Unit is investigating the cause of the fire. 815

LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Scientists are using an autonomous underwater vehicle to help get purified wastewater to your faucets.  The remote-controlled sub operated by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography helps measure how the purified water mixes with the Lake Jennings reservoir water.It’s one of the state-required steps water officials need to take before purified wastewater from the Padre Dam Water District’s Advanced Water Purification System is introduced to homes through Helix Water District’s Lake Jennings and water treatment facility.“There’s that factor that it’s coming from a waste facility originally.  So, what happens if there’s some sort of failure that didn’t get caught? Well, now there’s a buffer. There’s a buffer. It will sit in the reservoir,” said Helix’s Director of Water Quality Brian Olney.If all goes as planned, Padre Dam will need to expand its Advanced Water Purification System and build a pipeline to deliver that water to Lake Jennings.  Olney said that could happen by 2023. 1045
