SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Hanukkah, Judaism's eight-day commemoration of the temple rededication that followed the Maccabees' victory over a larger Syrian army, begins at sundown Thursday evening, with socially distant and virtual events replacing public menorah lighting ceremonies because of coronavirus-related restrictions.Hanukkah runs through Friday, Dec. 18 this year.At 5 p.m. Thursday, Liberty Station -- in partnership with The Chabads of Downtown San Diego and Pacific Beach -- will host a public menorah lighting at Liberty Station's Central Promenade to commemorate the first night of Hanukkah. The family-friendly festivities will feature music and the traditional lighting of the menorah.Entertainment includes Cyr Wheel Acrobats and Fire Dancers, packaged treats and the traditional lighting of the menorah. The Central Promenade has 20,000 square feet of space in which to spread out and socially distance. The organizers ask guests in attendance to stay masked when not eating or drinking. The largest regional event for the religious holiday will be a drive-in concert at the Del Mar Fairgrounds at 4:30 p.m. Monday, when all The Chabad Centers of San Diego County will host their Chanukah Spectacular, featuring a Grand Menorah lighting, Chanukah gifts and musical performances headlined by Israeli pop star Gad Elbaz.Tickets are available at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/chanukah-spectacular-featuring-israeli-pop-star-gad-elbaz-tickets-129094096919.Once the Jews defeated the Hellenist Syrian forces of Antiochus IV in 165 B.C. at the end of a three-year rebellion, the temple in Jerusalem, which the occupiers had dedicated to the worship of Zeus, was rededicated by Judah Maccabee, who led the insurgency begun by his father, the high priest Mattathias.According to the story of Hanukkah, Maccabee and his soldiers wanted to light the temple's ceremonial lamp with ritually pure olive oil as part of their rededication but found only enough oil to burn for one day. The oil, however, burned for eight days in what was held to be a miracle.Hanukkah -- which means "dedication" in Hebrew -- is observed around the world by lighting candles in a special menorah called a Hanukkiah each day at sundown for eight days, with an additional candle added each day.The reason for the lights is so passersby should see them and be reminded of the holiday's miracle.Hanukkah begins on the 25th day of Kislev, the ninth month of the Hebrew calendar. The Hebrew calendar is lunar, as opposed to the solar Gregorian calendar.Other Hanukkah traditions include spinning a dreidel, a four-sided top, which partially commemorates a game that Jews under Greek domination are believed to have played to camouflage their Torah study, and eating foods fried in oil, such as latkes, pancakes of grated raw potatoes and jelly doughnuts.Children receive Hanukkah "gelt" (the Yiddish word for money) from parents and grandparents. The tradition originated with 17th-century Polish Jews giving money to their children to give their teachers during Hanukkah, which led to parents also giving children money. In the United States, the practice has evolved into giving holiday gifts to children and others.Unlike on the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashana -- the Jewish new year -- or Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement -- observant Jews are permitted to work and attend school during Hanukkah, the only Jewish holiday that commemorates a military victory. 3440

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - County supervisors voted 4-1 today to have the chief administrative officer direct the Health and Human Services Agency to develop a plan for in-house medical care of jail inmates and possible outsourcing of those duties as well.Sheriff Bill Gore will review the plan, and officials will also put out requests for proposals from private contractors to handle those duties.Supervisor Dianne Jacob made the motion to examine both an in-house model and outsourcing.``I don't think we should go with just one approach,'' Jacob said, adding she is a proponent of outsourcing county services, if it results in good service for less money.Gore has cited his department's million annual health care bill for inmates as a reason to explore cost-saving strategies. He asked supervisors to consider possible vendors for the county's health care needs in its jails and other facilities.Gore told supervisors that his goal was simply to get the best care at the best value, with an aging population of inmates and other serious issues.``I am proud of our response to these challenges, but I'm not one to assume that I have all the answer to these challenges,'' Gore said.Gore also objected to waiting 180 days for a staff appraisal of outsourcing. ``If it's a good idea in sixth months, it's a good idea today,'' he added. He also praised the 300 men and women who provide medical care to inmates as outstanding employees.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, who is opposed to any privatization of services and proposed having HHSA handle inmate care, cast the lone no vote. Before the board voted, Fletcher said outsourcing to a for-profit entity would not lead to a better outcome.``As a board, we are the ones who are on the hook,'' in terms of lawsuits if an inmate doesn't get the appropriate care, Fletcher said. ``We should have input.''Fletcher asked the board to vote on his proposal to have the HHSA administer medical and behavioral health services in jails, but the motion died for lack of a second.Board Chairman Greg Cox said he was encouraged that HHSA would develop its own proposal.Cox praised both county medical employees and contractors for working in such a demanding field, but said the system right now is too bifurcated, adding that several legal items on Tuesday's closed-session agenda involved inmate care.Supervisors voted after a lengthy public hearing, in which nearly every person who called was opposed to private outsourcing. Health care workers mentioned low morale at some detention facilities, and the risks workers are taking during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most speakers identified themselves as members of Service Employees International Union, Local 221. 2697

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Health officials Wednesday reported seven more deaths in San Diego County due to influenza complications last week, bringing this flu season's death toll to 42.The seven residents were between the ages of 53 and 90 and all had additional medical issues. Only two of them had been vaccinated, according to the county Health and Human Services Agency. At this time last flu season, the county had received reports of 281 deaths due to flu complications. The county also saw a new weekly high for lab-confirmed flu cases at 545, according to the HHSA's weekly flu report. The county has recorded 5,486 confirmed flu cases so far this flu season, a far cry from the 17,397 reported at this time last flu season. County health officials touted the data in the weekly flu report as evidence that the current flu season may still be cresting."Influenza is still widespread in the region and continues to sicken San Diegans," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "Anyone who has not yet had a flu vaccine this season should get it now."County health officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention strongly advise the annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older, especially demographics with a heightened risk of serious complications, such as pregnant women, people older than 65 and people with chronic conditions. Recent flu seasons have extended as late into the year as May, according to county health officials.Flu shots are available at doctors' offices, retail pharmacies, community clinics and the county's public health centers. Residents can also call 211 or visit the county's immunization program website, sdiz.com, for a list of county locations administering free vaccines. 1751
