SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego and Mountain View community leaders honored the local work of a long-time resident Saturday with an honorary street.Theresa Mae "Mama T" Saunders was a resident and community member in Mountain View, helping with the development of Mountain View Park and its recreation center.In her honor, the city unveiled an honorary street sign above Ocean View Blvd. for Saunders. "Theresa Mae Saunders was a pillar of the Mountain View community," Councilmember Georgette Gómez said. "This honorary street name is one way we can commemorate her life of service to this community and to the City of San Diego."Saunders raised six children while also taking part in local volunteer work, feeding the homeless, and hosting garage sales to benefit those in need.  801

Shutoffs forced closures in seven districts including Alpine, Dehesa, Lakeside, Poway, and Cajon Valley.In Mira Mesa, winds toppled a tent that one restaurant had set up for outdoor dining. The owner of Golden Island Dim Sum and Asian Cuisine was left cleaning up the mangled mess Thursday morning in hopes of welcoming customers back later that day.In Julian, employees at the Villa Chardonnay Horses with Wings sent out a plea for help after their power was shut off.They have about 350 animals on their property including horses and dogs. Without a generator, they say they can’t give their animals any water.“We need electricity to pump the wells,” said Cindy Montgomery. “I've got a generator in the back of this car right now but it's a small one that will suffice for now, but we need an industrial size generator.”Montgomery says they have a solar-powered unit as a backup but it isn’t working.“There are no generators anywhere,” said colleague Billie Feldman. “We need an industrial size generator. Any help that we can get please let us know please contact us as soon as possible.”SDG&E says these are some of the strongest winds they’ve seen since they began installing their network of weather stations nearly a decade ago. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego City Council President Pro Tem Barbara Bry is calling for an audit of a city-leased building repeatedly shuttered over asbestos.The building at 101 Ash Street was closed Saturday and city employees were relocated for "the next few weeks" over asbestos violations, Bry said in a memo. Bry added that she received an update on June 17, 2019 that the project at the location remained "on schedule and within budget" after she requested an update 10 days prior."It is apparent that 101 Ash Street is neither on-time nor on-budget. Officials later said they wanted to renovate all 19 floors, estimating that cost to come at about million for each floor. The costs put the project on hold, leaving the building vacant, City News Service reported.Construction was also stopped over asbestos violations in August 2019.Bry is now asking the city to answer a slew of inquiries over the city's process used to inspect and purchase the building, total costs to-date associated with employee relocations, unforeseen budget increases, subcontractor performance, and the financial impact on the city's Development Services Department."It continues to be frustrating to hear about issues with 101 Ash Street," Bry wrote.Prior to the city leasing the building, the location was occupied by San Diego Gas & Electric from 1968 through 1998, and by Sempra Energy from 1998 through 2015. 1921

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Gas & Electric this week turned off power to tens of thousands of customers due to high wind conditions, but almost three days into the shutoff, some customers say they’re running out of options and need their power back now.East County resident Cynthia Chisum told ABC 10News, “It isn’t fun. We’ve lived in this house for 45 years. So, I know about power outages. But we’ve never had one of these preemptive power outages.”Chisum isn’t new to red flag warnings and what that comes with, as precautions are taken to make sure everyone stays safe.But this time Chisum is running out of options. Her family has been relying on candles, lamps, and battery powered equipment to make it through. Their big problem is the freezer -- without any power, their food is close to rotting.“We have a freezer full of fish that my husband caught during a fishing trip and we hate for all that to go spoiled,” Chisum said.Chisum said it was windy Wednesday night, but since then it’s been calm. That’s why she believes her power should be restored quickly.SDG&E posted an update on their website laying out their restoration plans, saying “crews are conducting visual inspections of each impacted circuit to determine whether there were any wind related damage before power can be restored.”The utility also said crews are looking for safety hazards such as downed lines, debris or tree branches caught in power lines. If no damage is found, power can be restored quickly.For those impacted by the outages, SDG&E has set up drive-thru resource centers where customers can get water and snacks or charge devices. 1646

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Gas & Electric is warning customers of a scam in which people are getting phone calls and emails saying they owe hundreds of dollars for a new electrical meter.San Diego resident Maria Genova almost fell victim to the scam."It was very elaborate, very credible, very persistent and very convincing," she said.Genova showed 10News an email she received, and Iit had the SDG&E logo and even a QR code. The email said she owed 8.63 for a meter upgrade and if she didn't pay it, her service would be suspended.It also promised hundreds of dollars of other fees for removal, locksmith services and more.Genova also got a pair of phone calls about the issue, which had her convinced that it was legitimate."I was about ready to pay," said Genova. "I had my credit card in hand. But as soon as he said I had to pay cash, I knew there was something wrong."Genova called SDG&E, and Tthey told her the email and phone calls were not from the company.In a statement, SDG&E told 10News that they will never charge customers to replace a smart electric meter and that if they need to do any maintenance on a meter, technicians will contact the resident before doing any work.SDG&E said they've received reports of more than 13,600 scam phone calls already in 2019. It's something they constantly monitor, and they have a page on their website dedicated to helping people identify and avoid scams.Genova said she's glad she didn't lose any money and hopes other people can learn from her close call."Ask questions if you have any doubt," she said. "Call the company themselves, ask if this is true or not before you give anyone your information."Here is the full statement from SDG&E:"We can confirm that this particular case is indeed a scam. The important thing for our customers to know is that SDG&E will not charge them to come out and replace a smart electric meter. The exception to this is when customers choose to opt-out of having a smart meter and ask for an analog model instead. The cost for the opt-out is a one-time meter change fee of and an additional monthly charge, over a three-year period.SDG&E proactively tracks and maintains 1.45 million electric meters in our service territory daily. If we need to replace a malfunctioning meter, our technicians will knock on the door before changing it. If our customers have any questions or concerns about emails or phone calls they receive from people claiming to be with SDG&E, they can always reach out to our customer service team at 1-800-411-7343 to verify the information. We also encourage customers to file a police report in cases where they suspect fraud.Unfortunately, utility scams are a nationwide problem.
