CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - On a given evening, the streets of Carlsbad Village are filled with people walking, biking, and driving across the train tracks that bisect the city. The number of trains passing through has also been steadily increasing.“There are projections that say in the next 10 years train traffic is going to double through this region,” said Jason Haber, who works for the City of Carlsbad.Carlsbad Village is one of the last remaining stretches of train tracks along the San Diego Coast that has not been double-tracked to accommodate the growth in train volume. But there are plans to change that. The option being pushed by the city is to trench the tracks through the downtown area. That would also address the other pressing issue on the tracks: safety. In the last 5 years, the North County Transit District says 11 people have died from being struck by a train in the city.Last September, Jason Holsinger was killed where the tracks cross Grand Avenue when he rode his bike passed a lowered crossing arm.Near Tamarack Avenue, Josh Foster was killed last February while walking along the tracks. The Medical Examiner determined he had marijuana in his system but ruled it an accident. One of the most high profile deaths occurred in 2014 when 22-year-old Patrick Terrin was struck by a train while crossing at Grand Avenue after a night of drinking. The family sued the City of Carlsbad and BNSF railways claiming there were inadequate safety measures at the crossing for pedestrians. However, they lost the case when a judge determined the city and BNSF were not liable. If a plan to trench the tracks is given the green light, the vehicle and pedestrian crossings would go over the tracks. Two alternatives are currently being looked at, a shorter and longer version. The North County Transit District oversees the tracks in the area and would end up making the end decision. It’s unclear where the money would come from at this point. Depending on the alternative chosen, the project could cost between 300-400 million dollars. Construction could take several years. 2093

CHICAGO (AP) — Tony La Russa, the Hall of Famer who won a World Series championship with the Oakland Athletics and two more with the St. Louis Cardinals, is returning to manage the Chicago White Sox 34 years after they fired him. “While I have had other inquiries about managing since retiring, this opportunity with the White Sox brings together a number of important factors that make this the right time and the right place,” La Russa said in a press release. “The on-field talent is amazing, and the front office, led by Kenny Williams and Rick Hahn, has done everything necessary to create an atmosphere of long-term success. All of those factors aligned to make this a tremendous opportunity, and I am excited to get going as soon as possible by building a coaching staff and getting to work.”The 76-year-old La Russa rejoins the franchise where his managing career began more than four decades ago. “We are extremely excited about the future of this team,” said Rick Hahn, White Sox general manager/senior vice president in the press release. “As we showed in 2020, this is a young, talented club that we expect to only grow better and better in the coming years. Adding in a Hall of Fame manager who is recognized as being one of the best in the history of the game, we are a step closer to our goal of bringing White Sox fans another championship.”He takes over for Rick Renteria after what the White Sox insisted was a mutual agreement to split. La Russa in only the third skipper to manage the White Sox twice, the team said.La Russa inherits a team loaded with young stars and productive veterans that made the playoffs for the first time since 2008.According to ESPN, La Russa is now the oldest active manager in the leagues by five years. Houston Astros' skipper Dusty Baker is 71.La Russa hasn't managed a team since 2011 when the Cardinals defeated the Texas Rangers in the World Series, ESPN reported. 1926

BUTLER COUNTY, Ohio – A sheriff in southwestern Ohio issued a warning Wednesday to those who may wish to harm the officers in his department.Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones wrote in a press release that “lawlessness” directed towards law enforcement won’t be tolerated in his community north of Cincinnati.“You shoot at the police expect us to shoot back,” wrote Jones. “I will not allow my deputies or any law enforcement officer in Butler County to take the abuse I have seen over the past several months. If you come to this county expecting a free pass to harm one of my men or women in uniform keep in mind, nothing in life is free.”The sheriff cited incidents in other parts of the country over the past few months, including water being dumped on police in New York, projectiles being thrown and lasers being used to blind officers in Portland, and law enforcement being shot in U.S. cities like Chicago. The sheriff’s comments come at a time when people across the country are protesting police brutality and advocating for racial justice in their communities. While demonstrators have clashed with officers during some of these protests, it should be noted that a large majority of demonstrations have been peaceful. The sheriff’s office’s press release was posted on Facebook and has begun to go viral, racking up nearly 3,000 shares in less than a day.Jones has made other controversial statements in the past. In 2017, the sheriff made headlines when he said he had no intention of having his deputies use Narcan to help people who have overdosed. 1572

CHICAGO, Ill. – Approximately 7 million Americans live with the movement disorder known as essential tremor. Another 1 million have Parkinson’s. But a new incision-less treatment that focuses ultrasound beams onto the brain is providing new hope to patients who suffer from movement disorders.Gary Sindelar, 75, began experiencing tremors in his hands and legs while in his early 60s.“They were kind of scary because I didn't know what it was. I didn't know why my hands were jumping and my fingers were moving, and I didn't want them to,” said Sindelar. The tremors made everyday activities, like eating, increasingly difficult.“I would cut, and I would cut and all of a sudden my hand would jump in and would throw the food right off the plate,” he said. Essential tremor is a neurological disorder that causes involuntary and rhythmic shaking. It can affect almost any part of the body, but the trembling most often occurs in hands, making simple tasks, like drinking water from a glass or tying shoelaces, difficult.“I didn't like you have to explain to my grandchildren all the time. ‘What's the matter with grandpa?’”After years of living with the condition, Sindelar’s doctors at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago determined he was a candidate for a new, non-surgical procedure.“There are some patients who are old or older and the surgical risk is high,” said Dr. Sepehr Sani, associate professor of neurosurgery at Rush University Medical Center. “And so, they choose to accept and a very poor quality of life with tremors.”Neurosurgeons used a mouse and a computer instead of a scalpel. More than 1,000 ultrasound waves coalesce to burn lesions in the brain and stop the tremors. The neurosurgeon is guided by real-time hi-resolution MR imaging.“We can actually see with our own eyes what's happening inside the brain as this is occurring and that allows us to control exactly where and how much of the lesion we make,” said Sani. The innovative treatment is now covered by Medicare in all 50 states.Sani says the new incision-less outpatient procedure could be a revolution in treatment.“Now the patients literally walk into an MRI machine and get the treatment and they can leave within about an hour, hour and a half.”Six weeks after undergoing the procedure, Sindelar’s left hand and leg are more still than they’ve been in more than a decade.“This side, I can hold it steady,” he said.Regaining that steadiness, he says has been life-altering.“I would have said to you that I think I probably had 10 years of life,” said Sindelar. “And I could have 50 years left now.”It’s an emotional reality that could provide hope to countless others. 2667
