The Celebration of Champions honors the doctors and nurses at Rady Children's Hospital and raises the spirits of hundreds of children and their families fighting to live healthy, happy lives. Sports figures and media types running with these champions and honoring those tearfully paying homage to the ones who've passed. It's an emotional day.4th of July is a blast! Snow Summit was a bit colder but a fabulous time as well.Finally we remember a little Lakeside girl: an Angel in Heaven, Hero on Earth, Forever in our Hearts. Kiera Larsen was ten years old when the family SUV began rolling down the driveway toward her playmates. She ran over and pushed two younger friends to safety but was crushed to death herself. Kiera was recognized with a Carnegie Hero medal and a personal letter from then President Barack Obama. We celebrate Kiera. 2918

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Several North County residents felt their homes and businesses rattle briefly after a loud boom Friday.The noise and shaking were reported at about 1:30 p.m., according to San Diego Sheriff's Department. Deputies in the North County received calls from Vista about the noise. 10News also fielded several calls from Oceanside and San Marcos over the incident.USGS did not register any major earthquakes in the region Friday, according to the agency's website. At about 1:31 p.m., USGS recorded a 1.6-magnitude earthquake with a depth of about 5 miles in the Ocotillo Wells area, about 100 miles east of Oceanside.Camp Pendleton was scheduled to perform exercises involving mortar fire and high explosive munitions, according to a noise advisory statement, and finish its Exercise Iron Fist training alongside Japanese armed forces on base Friday. However, a spokesperson for Camp Pendleton told 10News the base was on normal operations Friday.The base's website advises that, "depending on atmospheric conditions, the sound of the explosions may be amplified and heard up to 50 miles away." A map of Camp Pendleton shows Oceanside is located about seven to 10 miles away from the base's impact areas.10News reached out to MCAS Miramar to check on Friday's base operations, but did not immediately hear back. 1333

Across San Diego County, small business owners hoped customers would make an effort to shop local during a time when they’re hurting.“A day like this could potentially be one of the most important days for a small business,” said Joey Flores, saying Chimera, an outdoor market for clothing, records and cacti in North Park, was taking extra precautions for small business Saturday to protect people from coronavirus.In Barrio Logan, sisters Marla and Abigail Mercado went to Casa Xovi, a local gift shop filled with items celebrating the Latino community.“Supporting our local business because we want, especially in Barrio Logan, we really want the history and the culture to stay here. So even if you’re only spending ten bucks here and there, that’s money that adds up,” they said.Casa Xavi owner Xochitl Villarreal said she’s seen more customers the weekend following Thanksgiving and hopes this continues. She said small business Saturday is an important day, but encourages people to make efforts to shop local even after the holiday weekend is over.“It is what it is and we have to live through it and we have to be strong, be resilient,” said Villarreal.In Oceanside, William Bike, the Executive Chef at Mission Avenue Bar and Grill said the community members are what has helped them stay afloat, in addition to all of the local businesses who are sticking together to support each other.“We have that big local following, that big local support and that’s really what’s kept us alive,” said Bike. 1584

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Schools across San Diego County can reopen for in-person learning if they choose to on Tuesday, Sept. 1, as long as our COVID-19 case rate stays low enough through Sunday, Aug. 31.The county will be providing free testing for all school employees, which is strongly recommended by the California Department of Public Health.“What we’re going to be doing is making testing available at over 20 County-coordinated sites,” said Supervisor Nathan Fletcher. “In addition to that, we’re working with the San Diego Office of Education to open additional testing sites regionally that will be dedicated to school staff.”County officials say testing for asymptomatic children is discouraged, but if parents feel the need to have their children tested, they should consult with their pediatrician.Eight to ten school districts plan to reopen within the next two weeks to one month, according to Dr. Paul Gothold, San Diego County Office of Education Superintendent.“If there’s 5% of positive cases identified in one school, then the entire school would need to shut down,” said Gothold.More than 100 schools, mostly private, applied for waivers to reopen for in-person learning. The county stopped accepting the waivers this week since all schools can likely reopen soon.“I feel confident that we’re ready to reopen,” said Holly McClurg, Superintended of the Del Mar Union School District. The district’s waiver was approved, McClurg said district officials have been working with experts, physicians, and parents for months to develop a safe reopening plan.She said students and teachers at the district’s eight schools were split into two groups. Parents and teachers had the option of choosing virtual learning or in-person learning, said McClurg.Virtual learning started this week, and in-person learning will begin on Sept. 8.“We knew that we had prepared and done a very diligent job of making sure that all of the practices, protocols, PPE were in place. We’ve had expertise throughout this entire community that’s been instrumental in helping us make this decision,” she said. “I feel confident that we’re ready to reopen and can hardly wait to see everyone on Sept. 8.”Some of the larger districts have decided to stick with strictly distance learning for now, including San Diego Unified and the Chula Vista Elementary School District.A spokesperson for Sweetwater Union High School District tells ABC 10News that because COVID-19 continues to have a significant impact on communities in the Southbay, schools will continue with distance learning at least through Oct. 2. Any changes will be announced on Sept. 21.San Marcos Unified Started the school year remotely last week. Superintendent Dr. Carmen Garcia sent ABC 10News a statement saying in part, “Our Governing Board will be approving our return to in-person instruction at our upcoming September board meeting.”Poway Unified will also start virtually on Sept. 2, but parents received a letter from the superintendent which read in part, “Even with this shorter, revised reopening timeline, we have no way of knowing for certain whether San Diego County will be able go 14 straight days staying off the monitoring list. As a large school district, we cannot wait until the day before the first day of school to find out. We already know the constantly changing timelines and decisions have made planning extremely difficult and frustrating for District leadership, our staff, and our families. As a result, to avoid further uncertainty for our staff and families planning for Fall, the Board of Education reaffirmed our Sept. 2 fully virtual start at its last meeting. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University’s oldest known alumnus passed away just 17 days after celebrating his 107th birthday, the campus reported.According to school officials, William “Bill” Vogt is among the first students to set foot on the campus at Campanile Drive in 1931."It was during the Great Depression at a time when Edward L. Hardy, whom Vogt once recalled as “very low key,” was the school’s second president," the school said.SDSU said Vogt completed his "business degree course work in late 1934 when San Diego State had no official commencement ceremony for mid-year degree completion. Although he said he requested a diploma, he could not recall having ever received one."In 2018, SDSU President Adela de la Torre honored his request and presented Vogt with a diploma 83 years later during a ceremony.The school said that Vogt was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War and retired in 1970 with the rank of commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve."A notice of his death issued by the Navy said he enlisted in the Reserve with a rank of Yeoman First Class in 1940 and was called up Dec. 8, 1941, the day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He served as an intelligence officer at several locations, including California and Washington, D.C. While living in Seattle, he was called back to active duty upon the outbreak of the Korean War," the school said.Vogt's son described his father as a role model, best friend, and hero, but also as a loyal Aztecs basketball fan.“He saw 90 years of SDSU basketball and this was the best team in 90 years,” Bob Vogt said. “The team meant a lot to him." 1641
