SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A stretch of Harbor Drive near San Diego International Airport was shut down after a deadly crash Wednesday morning.The single-vehicle crash was reported just after 11 a.m. on northbound Harbor Drive, about a mile from the airport’s Terminal 1.ABC 10News learned a blue car traveling at a high rate of speed on the southbound side struck an object, lost control and then crossed the median onto the northbound lanes before coming to rest.The driver was declared dead at the scene.Due to the wreck, authorities were forced to close off at least one lane on northbound Harbor Drive, creating a lengthy backup for motorists heading towards the airport. 676

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After 125 years serving San Diego customers Jessop's Jewelry store is closing down. Owner Jim Jessop tells 10News it was a decision several years in the making and one that is definitely bittersweet. All three of his sons opted not to take over and he didn't want to sell a business with such strong family ties. Jessop's dates back to the late 1800's when Jim's great grandfather opened the first store. He also designed the iconic clock which is now on display at Horton Plaza.Jessop says he doesn't have a firm closing date, he will simply stay open until he's sold the last piece of jewelry. Property owners at Horton have asked Jessop to move the clock, so he is now in the process of looking for another location that will preserve the timepiece. 799

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A statue of a dog that sits in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter is often overlooked, but historians say it says a lot about San Diego's past and its present."A lot of people walk by every day and don't even know the story of who Bum is," said Professor David Miller with the San Diego History Center.Bum the Dog was a stray in the 1890s. According to the History Center, he arrived on a boat without an owner or any identification and made himself at home in his new town."He was really owned by nobody but loved by everybody, and he became a symbol of the new San Diego community," said Miller.Throughout his life in San Diego, Bum would wander through all parts of downtown, often bridging the gap between the upper-class areas north of Market Street and the "seedier" parts of the Gaslamp Quarter."This was the area that you had the bars, the saloons, the brothels," said Miller. "Bum didn't live by the social categories that we had created. So he was just as comfortable going to the firehouse as he was going to the brothel or the Chinese butcher shop."Bum also had adventures. Miller tells a story of how he wound up on a train to LA, spent a few days there, and then came back.He also lost a paw in a fight with another dog. Local veterinarians took care of him whenever he got injured."A surgeon had to amputate part of Bum's leg. So he walked around with a limp for the rest of his life, but he was this hero who had to stand up for himself," said Miller.The statue of Bum, also missing a paw, sits in the garden at the Gaslamp Historical Foundation. Most people who walk by it every day never see it.Other parts of San Diego have paid homage to Bum. The city's dog licenses in the early 1900s had his picture on them. And the History Center's kids club is named after Bum.Miller said Bum's story teaches us all about the importance of history."History is fun stories, it's people's lives, it's dogs getting into fights and kicked by horses and getting on trains to LA," said Miller. "But those stories tell us something more important about ourselves and who we are as San Diego."The statue is located on 4th and Island on the Northeast corner. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An autopsy report for a San Diego State student who died after falling from his bed after a night of partying revealed elevated alcohol levels.The report from the county Medical Examiner found that Dylan Hernandez, 19, died of blunt force injuries of head and ruled his death an accident. At the time of the autopsy, a toxicology report said elevated alcohol levels of 0.06 percent and cannabinoids were found in his system. However, earlier reports from campus police said he had a 0.23 percent blood-alcohol level the morning he fell.Hernandez fell from his bunk bed in the early morning hours of Nov. 7, 2019, after a fraternity party that night. The family said they believed campus police were not pursuing certain angles, including a possible cover-up."The Hernandez family is concerned because witnesses they provided to SDSU and UPD still have not been questioned," George Kindley, the Hernandez family's lawyer, said.Hernandez's family claims SDSU Police never sought out warrants for Snapchat videos or phone records from members of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, the fraternity Hernandez was pledging to join. They said police were aware that some fraternity brothers may have instructed others to delete videos and messages that were incriminating.University police said they are aware of the autopsy results released Thursday and "will be evaluating the findings as part of the ongoing investigation." 1916
