POMONA (CNS) - A 38-year-old man was charged today with the murder of a 9-year-old girl whose body was found partially inside a large duffel bag near an equestrian trail in the Hacienda Heights area.Emiel Lamar Hunt -- who is believed to be the boyfriend of Trinity Love Jones' mother -- was arrested early Saturday in connection with the girl's death. Sheriff's officials said Hunt was found sleeping in his vehicle in a lot near San Diego International Airport. The arrest was assisted by the Port of San Diego Harbor Police. Hunt appeared briefly in a Pomona courtroom Tuesday, but his arraignment was delayed until April 16. He remains jailed in lieu of million bail. The criminal complaint alleges that Hunt has a 2005 conviction for child abuse from San Diego County. He could face up to 50 years to life in state prison if convicted as charged, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.Sheriff's officials said earlier that two "persons of interest'' had been detained for questioning in the case, but only Hunt was charged Tuesday.Sheriff's officials said they were not disclosing any additional information about the second person of interest, pending further investigation. The victim's relatives told reporters the girl's mother was the second person beingquestioned, but sheriff's officials would not confirm those reports, and there is no record of her being arrested.County workers clearing some brush in the area found the girl's body found about 10 a.m. March 5. The girl was partially inside a black roll-away- type duffel bag, with her head and upper body protruding from the partially zipped bag left at the bottom of an embankment close to Colima Road and the 3400 block of Hacienda Boulevard, near the His Lai Buddhist Temple, authorities said. The coroner's office ruled her death a homicide, but officials have not said how the girl died.Sheriff's detectives initially asked for the public's help in identifying the girl, releasing a composite sketch of the child and photos of the clothing she was wearing. Family members who created a memorial of candles, flowers, balloons, stuffed animals and photos near where the girl's body was found eventually confirmed her identity."Words can't explain what I'm feeling right now,'' Anthony Jones, Trinity's father, said at the memorial site. ``I just want answers. I just want justice. She was just the best -- full of character, full of life, full of joy.''Jones said he learned of his youngest daughter's death through a telephone call. 2536

Power restoration after Hurricane Maria, which struck almost a year ago, has been completed, according to the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority."According to our reports, all of our clients that were without service since Maria now have electricity," said Geraldo Qui?ones a spokesman for the power authority, which is known as PREPA. He added that the customers "form part of the recuperation process of the electrical system after the devastation of the hurricane."The utility tweeted a picture?of "Charlie, Jazmín and children from Ponce," indicating the family was the last to have power restored. But those living in El Yunque National Forest take issue with the claim."It's something that's not true," resident Jose Salda?a Jr., 43, said on the phone, denying that power was restored, with frustration in his voice.Salda?a told CNN on Tuesday that he and his family have yet to see power restored to their home and local business inside El Yunque, on the northeast side of the island. His family runs La Muralla, a small business that has been selling local food in El Yunque for the past 40 years. His parents, both in their 60s, live above the business, and haven't had power since Hurricane Irma hit the island, weeks before Maria wreaked havoc in Puerto Rico.Salda?a said power has not been restored because of a back-and-forth with the US Forest Service and PREPA.When asked why PREPA is claiming 100% power restoration when El Yunque residents still don't have power, Qui?ones said they "don't have control in El Yunque" and pointed at the US Forest Service, saying the utility needs the agency's permission to be on federal land and install posts.Sharon Wallace, the forest supervisor for El Yunque National Forest, acknowledged the complexities of power restoration in El Yunque."I think they're (PREPA) doing the best they can," Wallace said.According to Wallace, PREPA asked to install a new power line that would have required a lengthier process and special permission. To restore power to the existing line however, Wallace said PREPA does not need additional permission to maintain the line in El Yunque."We knew from the beginning we would be one of the last ones," Wallace said, adding that power for the Forest Service headquarters was restored in April.Qui?ones said the two organizations remain in constant communication."We are confident that this will be resolved soon," he said. In the meantime, Salda?a said frustration is growing. His family business was shut down for five months after the hurricane hit.The family runs a generator about 15 hours a day, more than what's recommended, and spends about 0 a week on fuel to run it."It's more work, more sacrifices, more costs," Salda?a said.PREPA has 1.47 million power customers and returning power to the island after Maria has been a challenge after what has been the largest blackout in US history and?the second-largest in world history.Just last week, an outage knocked out power to almost 130,000 customers. Power was quickly restored. But Puerto Ricans on the island say the instability causes anxiety, especially during the Atlantic hurricane season, which began June 1.Nearly 3.4 million residents were left without power on September 20, when Hurricane Maria struck, as the island struggled with Hurricane Irma's brush earlier that month."It's like they've forgotten us," Salda?a said. 3390

President Donald Trump has announced that he will accept the Republican nomination for president next week from the White House, he said during a campaign rally in Wisconsin. While presidents facing re-election have generally shied away from holding major political events at the White House, Trump is eschewing precedent with his convention speech, which will come as the capstone to next week’s Republican National Convention. The convention, which starts next Monday, will conclude on Aug. 27 with the president’s address. One reason presidents have opted to hold events away from the White House is not to comingle government and campaign staffs. While the president and vice president are exempt from the Hatch Act, staff members and aides generally have to avoid many types of political activity. Hatch Act concerns have previously been an issue for the White House, most notably the US Special Counsel calling Trump aide Kellyanne Conway a "repeat offender" of the act. But with this year’s convention being held virtually, speeches will be done on location. The same is true for the Democrats, who start their national convention tonight. Trump said he had considered Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, as an alternate location for his acceptance speech. 1260

President Donald Trump acknowledged Monday there would not be time for Congress to vote through new tax cuts before next month's midterm elections. That's after he told reporters on Saturday that Republicans would unveil a new package "sometime just prior, I would say, to November."He conceded in Monday's comments outside the White House there wouldn't be new tax cuts before the November 6 vote. But he insisted the GOP is working toward introducing something in the next few weeks."We're putting in a resolution sometime in the next week-and-a-half or two weeks," Trump said, suggesting he would still make a new tax plan a campaign issue in the closing weeks. He said the new plan would focus on middle-class Americans, as opposed to businesses, which were one of the main beneficiaries of his first tax cut."This is not for business. This is for middle. That's on top of the tax decrease that we've already given," he said."I'm going through Congress. We won't have time to do the vote. We'll do the vote later. We'll do the vote after the election," he said. 1071

President Donald Trump plans to cast his ballot in person on Saturday, taking advantage of Florida’s early voting period. The White House says the president will vote in West Palm Beach, a short drive from his Mar-a-Lago private club, and, as of 2019, his official residence. The club is located in the town of Palm Beach, which doesn’t have any early voting locations.Trump moved his residence to Florida a year ago from New York, citing his frustration with New York’s political leadership. He also hoped it would give him a boost in the critical battleground state. His path to another term in the White House is virtually nonexistent without a repeat victory in Florida. 681
