Joe Donnelly, and Marsha Blackburn won in Tennessee, according to CNN projections. Republicans later picked up their second Democratic Senate seat of the night when Kevin Cramer beat one Sen. Heidi Heitkamp in North Dakota, CNN projected.There was a blow for Democratic morale as Texas Sen. Ted Cruz held off a stronger than expected challenge from Beto O'Rourke to win a second term, CNN projected. Kevin McCarthy was elected House minority leader Wednesday, according to members of Congress in the closed-door meeting where the elections took place, meaning the California Republican will lead House GOP members after Speaker Paul Ryan leaves Capitol Hill at the end of his term in January.The vote was 159-43.With Ryan headed for the exits, McCarthy, the current No. 2 House Republican, was long viewed as the heavy favorite to become minority leader in the new Congress, the highest-ranking GOP leadership post with Republicans in the minority after losing control of the House of Representatives in the 2018 midterms.McCarthy faced a long-shot challenge from Rep. Jim Jordan, the co-founder of the conservative Freedom Caucus, but the California Republican is expected to prevail in his bid to become minority leader. Ryan announced in April that he would not seek re-election and has endorsed McCarthy, the House majority leader for the past four years, to be his successor.Trump and McCarthy have spoken about leadership races recently, territory that Presidents usually avoid so not as to seem like they're alienating members of their own party. In private conversations, Trump has pushed for Jordan and another close conservative ally -- Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina -- to have the top Republican positions on key committees, according to a source familiar. McCarthy doesn't dole out those positions-- that's for the House GOP Steering Committee -- but plenty of people on the Steering Committee are loyal to McCarthy and would heed his word. As of Wednesday afternoon it was not clear where Jordan or Meadows would land.A separate source confirmed to CNN that Jordan is interested in ranking member position on Judiciary Committee in order to check Democratic investigations that will be led by Rep. I helped build a majority from a deeper hole than this and I have what it takes to do it again."Jordan, meanwhile, has pitched himself as a leader who could help defend the President against what is expected to be aggressive Democratic-led oversight efforts."You stand up for the truth. You stand up and defend the White House and the President," Jordan told CNN in a recent interview after being asked how House Republicans can counter a Democratic majority pursuing oversight of the President and the administration.Rep. Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, a member of the Freedom Caucus, said on Tuesday that he plans to vote for Jordan and argued that House Republicans need a change over the status quo if they want to win back the majority."Unless we want to keep on losing races then we ought to consider doing something different than what we've been doing," Perry said. "I don't want to keep doing the same dumb things that we're doing and lose races."Whoever wins out as minority leader will become the most visible face of opposition to the incoming Democratic majority. The next minority leader will also have to decide whether and when the GOP minority might work to find common ground with Democrats and could also come under increased scrutiny from the President as the administration itself goes under a microscope in the new Democrat-controlled Congress.The leadership election comes as incoming freshmen, fresh off of their election wins last week, are in town for new member orientation. Dan Meuser, a member-elect from Pennsylvania, said he's spoken with both men over the weekend about their plans for the next two years, and he hasn't made a decision."I've gotten close with Kevin McCarthy. I think very highly of him. I think he's a very good conservative, showed up a lot of leadership. He certainly earned the position," Meuser told reporters on Tuesday. "On the same note, I think Jim Jordan is a smart, tough, focused individual. So I respect him as well. We'll see over the next couple of days."Next in line for the GOP leadership hierarchy in the new Congress is Rep. Steve Scalise, the current No. 3 House Republican, who is vying for the position of minority whip in the new Congress. Scalise, as majority whip, gained a higher national profile after he was injured last year in a shooting during a Republican congressional baseball practice. Scalise is not facing a challenge for the position.Rep. Liz Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, is running unopposed for the position of Republican conference chair, the third-ranking position in the leadership hierarchy with Republicans in the minority. Rachel Angel had to grow up fast.When she was just 16, Angel lived on her own in suburban Richmond Heights, about 20 minutes northeast of Cleveland. Her dad lived in Buffalo, New York. Her mom had just moved to North Carolina. Neither parent could provide a stable life, Angel said. As difficult as it was, she felt better off living on her own.“I was working full time, going to high school and falling asleep in calc class,” she said. “There’s this large group of individuals like myself that have to grow up much earlier. Working is essential to their survival. I have empathy for that.”Angel made it through high school, went on to college, and became a pharmacist.But in 2015 her empathy fueled the creation of Peerro, an app designed to help young people find jobs and become self-sufficient. She put her career as a pharmacist on hold to launch Peerro in Cleveland a couple of years ago. Angel recently moved the tech startup to Cincinnati after receiving a significant investment from CincyTech, the Cincinnati-based venture-capital development firm.“From the beginning, we loved her energy, the mission that she has with the company, and the software she’s developed,” said Stacey Browning, a managing director at CincyTech. “We see a huge potential.” Provided Stacey Browning Angel said she does, too.She and her small team are improving the technology platform as they work to educate more young people and employers about Peerro, a name that combines the words “peer” and “hero.”The app is designed for people between the ages of 14 and 24 who are looking for work, especially young adults who don’t have college degrees but want to find jobs that offer room to grow and advance. The platform is open to employers of all types that are looking for entry-level workers.“There’s nothing wrong with an entry-level employment opportunity, but it’s just that – an entry-level employment opportunity. And it’s sad when we feel like those are our only options,” said Angel, now 33. “A -an-hour job, -an-hour job is not our only option. It’s a starting point.”Here’s how Peerro works.Real-time opportunitiesYoung people looking for jobs download the app for free. It works on smartphones or computers. The platform asks a few questions about the job applicants and can require them to complete tutorials related to skills such as being on time for work.Then the young people can explore job postings that match the kind of work they’re seeking, filtering the options based on how far away they are, how much they pay, and whether they’re looking for part-time, full-time, temporary or seasonal work. They also can search for training programs.Employers that want to post a job on Peerro can get one free posting and access to the full Peerro system free for 90 days, Angel said. The system includes being able to post multiple jobs in addition to the use of training modules and interview scheduling tools. After 90 days, employers still get that one job posting free, but they must pay for the other services that Peerro offers.Peerro is always free for the young people who are looking for work, Angel said.“We have to communicate opportunity in real-time, because we’re changing so rapidly as far as the opportunities,” she said. “And Peerro’s kind of created that – a system that can communicate opportunity in real-time and actually allow someone to have value immediately.”Because Peerro encourages job applicants to include recommendations from people such as teachers and principals, it works kind of like LinkedIn but for younger people who aren’t necessarily interested in going to college, Browning said. Those applicants haven’t always had a way to show off their references and recommendations.“That just gives an employer more confidence,” she said. He posted a job on Peerro after hearing about it from a friend who also owns a business.“After going through my first initial process of trying to find an applicant, I would never use another service,” he said.Hailstock has hired three people through Peerro so far, he said, adding that he likes how he can customize his job listings and include prerequisites such as the completion of training videos.“It’s just a really easy way of hiring individuals, and you get higher-quality candidates,” he said. “It’s not like a one-click system where applicants are just clicking 100 jobs a day. You give them a call, and they don’t even know exactly that they applied for the job.”‘Let’s actually open the doors’Samir Gragston is 15 and will be a sophomore at Northwest High School. He’s using Peerro to try to get his first job.“It was a lot easier than signing up for a job online. So I thought that was pretty amazing,” he said. “Not hard at all. Just plug in your email and password, and there’ll be jobs for you and your age that you can do.”Samir plans to go to college after high school and would like to become a programmer, he said, but he wants to get that first job to gain some experience. Nobody’s just handing it to them.”Peerro aims to help teens and young adults get jobs where they will learn the skills they need to move forward and better understand where they want to go, Angel said.“Over 60% of the opportunities in America are not college-degree-required positions. Trump has repeatedly called the probe a "witch hunt" that hasn't found evidence of Russian collusion with his campaign, and his allies in and out of the White House say the special counsel should wrap things up.Prosecutors say Manafort collected million in foreign bank accounts from 2010 to 2014 and spent more than million on luxury purchases in the same period, including high-end clothing, real estate, landscaping and other big-ticket items.They also allege that Manafort lied to banks in order to take out more than million in loans after his Ukrainian political work dried up in 2015, and they accused him of hiding the foreign bank accounts from federal authorities.
