SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego is celebrating 250 years of history in 2019 with special events planned to commemorate the anniversary. Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced efforts for the San Diego 250 initiative Tuesday at a news conference. The San Diego region has been Kumeyaay territory for thousands of years, but the San Diego we know today began on July 16, 1769, city officials said. “This year we mark a tremendous milestone – 250 years of history, culture and achievement,” Mayor Faulconer said. “San Diego is the place where California began, and we will reflect on our past, commemorate this moment in time and look forward to building a better future for all San Diegans in the next 250 years. I want to thank the many dedicated individuals and organizations that have come together to help celebrate this important anniversary and create opportunities to learn more about our history and heritage as a city and region.” A group of civic leaders, organizations, community volunteers has met biweekly to plan key events. Kumeyaay representatives have also contributed to the group’s discussions about an accurate historical representation of their history. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County health officials have warned at least three local churches about having services indoors. The county sent out three letters to Skyline Church in La Mesa; Lighthouse Baptist Church in Lemon Grove; and Awaken Church's campus on Balboa Avenue in Kearny Mesa.The letters to Skyline and Lighthouse were very similar, saying indoor services create "significant risk of spreading COVID-19," encouraging the churches to move their in-person services outside. The third document is a cease-and-desist letter sent to Awaken Church ordering the church to stop indoor operations. All three letters are dated July 17 and are signed by County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten. The letters state that failure to comply with these orders can mean criminal misdemeanor citations with a fine of ,000 for each violation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego City leaders are deciding where to spend money in the next fiscal year. Wednesday’s meeting was the first step in the budget for the year. 10News spoke with Barbara Bry just before the meeting. “All nine of us have submitted our budget priorities. What’s interesting is there’s a lot of consensus among all of us as to how much the city should be allocating its funding," Bry said.The latest 10News-Union-Tribune polls shows the top issue as homelessness. It’s one of the issues Bry says will receive major support in next yea’s budget. Wednesday, the budget committee reviewed and adopted a set of funding priorities for what will be a priority for funding in the next fiscal year. The committee’s list is alphabetical at this point, so the issues aren’t ranked by importance. The list does, however, reflect what our poll uncovered: climate action, homelessness, parks and recreation facilities, public safety and sidewalk and street repairs are all important issues. As for our poll, homelessness and affordable housing came out on top at 21 and 20 percent respectively. Close behind is road repairs and further down the line, climate change, the Convention Center and mass transit. 10News asked Bry how the process will proceed. “The council will then discuss the priorities as a whole, then Mayor in April, then budget hearings in May.” 1380
