SAN FRANCISCO, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Google on Tuesday unveiled voice search for desktop computers and search-by-image, two new features allowing users to speak their search into the computer and search with the help of images.Speaking at the Internet search giant's Inside Search Event in San Francisco, Mike Cohen, head of Google's speech technology efforts, said its voice search is now available in 27 languages and dialects, an estimated coverage of around 5 billion people or two-thirds of world population.Voice search has already been available in Google's mobile search application from 2008. Adding the feature to desktops is part of Google's strategy to bring mobile innovations to its desktop search.The voice search on desktop performs similarly to voice search on smartphones -- users can click the microphone button and speak the query. It is only available via Google's Chrome browser for now.Cohen noted that the volume of Google mobile speech inputs has increased by six times in the last year.Also at the event, Google introduced search-by-image, which enables users to drag-and-drop, copy-and-paste image URL, or upload the image from the desktop into the search box. They can also use a Chrome or FireFox software extension to add images to the search.Google said the search-by-image feature will be available in most countries and regions over the next few days to Chrome users, noting that it will not collect and store any images that users use.
SAN FRANCISCO, June 15 (Xinhua) -- As social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter grow worldwide, more Internet retailers are beefing up their efforts to add social twists to their business, trying to define the idea of "social commerce" and capitalize the opportunity.On Wednesday, online auction giant eBay revealed some of the social features it is planning to launch later this year, while Copious, a San Francisco-based startup, launched its online social commerce marketplace with a slogan of "buying from and selling to people, not strangers."Copious asks users to log in through their Facebook accounts and allows buyers and sellers to see if they have friends in common in their social networking sites. Buyers can see more information about a seller and also see whether anyone in their networks has purchased, shared or commented on an item from a specific seller, rather than anonymity or simple profiles on sites like eBay and Craigslist.As for sellers, Copious has a social pricing mechanism that enables a seller to offer buyers discounts for sharing listings on Facebook and for following the seller on Copious.Jonathan Ehrlich, Copious co-founder and former Facebook head of marketing, told technology blog TechCrunch that the site is centralized around using social data as a signal to help users understand and trust other parties.According to Copious, the startup founded in January 2011 has raised two million U.S. dollars in funding from Foundation Capital, Google Ventures, Blackberry Partners Fund and a number of Silicon Valley angel investors.Also on Wednesday, Christopher Payne, vice president and head of eBay North America, delivered a keynote speech at the Internet Retailer Conference and Exhibition 2011 in San Diego, revealing some features eBay is launching during the social trend.One feature will enable users to log in their Facebook account on eBay's homepage to get product recommendations based on one's purchasing history and things they have "liked" on their Facebook page. BEIJING, Aug. 10 (Xinhuanet) -- A new technology can tell pregnant women whether they're having a boy or girl as early as seven weeks into a pregnancy -- months earlier than usual, according to media reports Wednesday.The technology works by detecting "cell-free fetal DNA," or DNA from the fetus, which floats freely in a pregnant woman's blood, said author Diana Bianchi of the Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. Her analysis of 57 studies from peer-reviewed medical journals showed that these blood tests, common in Europe but not in the U.S. can reveal a fetus' sex only a week or two after a pregnant woman misses her period. Women usually learn the fetus' sex through an ultrasound at 18 to 20 weeks.The technology will help families worried by having a child with rare genetic disorders that typically affect only boys, such as hemophilia or a type of muscular dystrophy, said Joseph Biggio, director of the Trimester Genetics Screening Clinic at the University of Alabama-Birmingham.If they're having a girl, however, they can stop worrying, he added, and avoid further invasive tests, which can provide a definitive answer about genetic disorders, but also increase the risk of miscarriage. SAN FRANCISCO, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Google Android chief Andy Rubin said on Tuesday that the activations of Android-powered devices are growing at a rate of 4.4 percent on a weekly basis, with over 500,000 devices activated each day worldwide."There are now over 500,000 Android devices activated every day, and it's growing at 4.4 percent w/w," tweeted Rubin, Google's Senior Vice President of Mobile who oversees the development of Android, the open-source operating system for smartphones.Last month, Google said at its annual developer conference Google I/O that 400,000 Android devices were being activated each day, compared with 300,000 daily activations in December and 100, 000 in May 2010.More research data have shown Android system's soaring market share and popularity. Earlier this month, Internet market research company ComScore reported that Android remained the No. 1 smartphone operating system in the United States over the three months ending in April. The system captured 36.4 percent of U.S. smartphone subscribers, while Apple's iOS system for iPhone had 26 percent of all smartphone users.In April, market research company Gartner said in a forecast that the Android operating system will own 49.2 percent of the global smartphone market and Apple's iOS will have an 18.9-percent share in the second place.
