The mayor of Austin, Texas, has apologized after reports revealed that he delivered an address urging his constituents to stay home to prevent the spread of COVID-19 while he was vacationing in Mexico."I regret this travel," Austin Mayor Steve Adler, a Democrat, said in a statement, according to The Austin American-Statesman. "My fear is that this travel, even having happened during a safer period, could be used by some as justification for risky behavior. In hindsight, and even though it violated no order, it set a bad example for which I apologize."According to the American-Statesman and KVUE-TV in Austin, Adler took the trip after he hosted a small outdoor wedding ceremony for his daughter in early November. Both outlets report that there were about 20 guests at the wedding — more than the recommended guidelines of a limit of 10 per gathering that was in effect at the time.Following the ceremony, KVUE reports that Adler and eight family members boarded a private jet and traveled to Cabo San Lucas for a resort vacation. One day into that trip, on Nov. 9, Adler urged Austinites to stay at home."We need to stay home if you can," Adler said in that video, according to the American-Stateman. "This is not the time to relax. We are going to be looking really closely. ... We may have to close things down if we are not careful."Adler told the American-Statesman that he consulted with public health officials before hosting the wedding and that all 20 guests were required to undergo rapid COVID-19 tests before attending. The IRS clarified on Friday that companies will be obligated not to take Social Security taxes from paychecks starting next week running through the end of the year.Nearly all Americans are taxed 6.2% per check to go toward Social Security. For now, barring any action from Congress, most Americans will see larger paychecks through the end of the year. Those making more than ,000 every two weeks will continue to have their Social Security taxes withheld from checks.The deferment is not an actual tax cut, and because the deferment was done via executive order rather than an act of Congress, the taxes will need paid back by April 30, 2021.The White House has said they would like to see the elimination of the Social Security payroll tax be made permanent in an effort to lower the tax burden. Opponents say that eliminating the tax on Americans would make Social Security insolvent.Stephen Goss, the chief actuary for the Social Security Administration, told the US Senate this week that a hypothetical bill that would make the tax deferment permanent would cause Social Security to no longer be able to make payments to beneficiaries by the middle of 2023.For employees making ,000 a year, the elimination of Social Security taxes would result in an extra per paycheck every two weeks. Assuming the employee has eight paychecks left in 2020, that would result in 2 in taxes deferred in 2020, which would be repaid in 2021. The Ohio State University announced on Friday that its investigation into coach Urban Meyer's handling of domestic violence allegations involving Meyer's assistant coach Zach Smith will conclude on Sunday, as scheduled. A six-person review board investigating the matter will then draft a report, which will be discussed at a closed-door meeting of the university's board of trustees. Following the meeting, which will likely take place sometime next week, university president Michael Drake could announce possible sanctions. Meyer was placed on paid administrative leave on Aug. 1 after a report published by former ESPN reporter Brett McMurphy claimed Meyer knew that Smith's wife had accused her husband of assaulting her. McMurphy also published photos of the woman which included a number of bruises. Those photos had previously been shared with Meyer's wife Shelley, who is also an employee of Ohio State. On Aug. 3, two days after he was suspended by OSU, Meyer released a statement admitting that he had lied to reporters about his knowledge of the allegations but claimed that he had followed proper protocol in reporting the incident to university officials. The alleged incident took place in 2015, while Smith was a wide receiver coach for Ohio State.
