SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new restaurant with a "Sam the Cooking Guy" concept is coming to Seaport Village. The Port of San Diego this week approved a 10-year lease with the owners and operators of Carnitas Snack Shack, Broken Yolk, and Little Italy food hall to open a new kind of restaurant at Seaport Village.The new restaurant, which will be on the east end of the property, will have a "Sam the Cooking Guy" concept. Sam Zien, also known as Sam the Cooking Guy, is a celebrity chef who aims to make cooking more down-to-earth, using ingredients that come from the everyday supermarket. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local college professor says her a electric scooter ride ended painfully after the scooter turned off in the middle of the ride.Jenny Mahoney, a professor of biology and kinesiology at Point Loma Nazarene University, was with three friends on scooters in December, headed to December Nights in Balboa Park. She says her friends were on Bird scooters, while she was on a Lime scooter with plenty of charge. The ride came to an end two minutes along Harbor Drive near the airport."I was in the bike lane and went from full speed to a dead stop," said Mahoney.She says the screen went blank as the scooter shut down. She remembers her body slamming into the handlebars and was then thrown off the scooter."A lot of pain. I wasn't able to breathe. Got the wind knocked out of me," said Mahoney.Mahoney says one of her friends crashed into her. He got up and carried her out of the bike lane. She suffered a broken bone in her hand, and a sprained wrist and ankle."You assume when you're on these scooters and following all the safety rules rules, you're going to get to your destination safely, but that didn't happen," said Mahoney.The question now: Has it happened before? Mahoney filed a claim with Lime before hiring attorney Evan Walker. Walker tells 10News he just got another call from a Seattle tourist whose wife remains hospitalized in San Diego from a similar incident with a Lime scooter."My understanding is that there have been numerous complaints of a similar nature made about these devices and that Lime is well aware of these complaints," said Walker.In late February, Lime issued a warning to riders of a technical bug that caused sudden excessive braking, usually downhill. Lime says in those cases, the scooter didn't shut off. While Mahoney doesn't know if those cases are related, she doesn't believe her incident is the only one. "I want them to take responsibilities for these injuries that are occurring ... and I want people to be aware, it's not as safe as they think it is," said Mahoney.A Lime spokesperson declined to talk about Mahoney's incident but issued the following statement: “Our entire global fleet has now been fully updated with the final firmware fix that appears to have eliminated occurrences of excessive braking, and we continue to closely monitor the issue to ensure it is categorically resolved.” 2375

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Paradise Hills family is in search of a good Samaritan after a young autistic man was mugged and beaten for his brand new iPhone, just blocks from his home.The incident played out along Briarwood Road on an afternoon two weeks ago. Garrett De Leon had just gotten off work and off the bus.His pride and joy was in his right hand - a new iPhone 10 that his parents gave to him for his birthday. Deleon was texting his mom that he was blocks from home, when it happened."This guy came from behind me and snatched my phone and pushed me to the ground," said De Leon.De Leon says he fought back, the two struggling on the ground. "He pushed me again and runs to the car," said De Leon.Deleon says he chased the man - a tall, lean black man wearing a beanie - to an older black car, where the man jumped in the back seat, the window rolled down."He tells his buddy to take off immediately," said De Leon. In the meantime, the thief was hitting De Leon, who says he was delivering his own blows through the window."I had too much adrenaline and didn't feel pain. Hopped up on anger and determined to get at them and at the phone," said De Leon.After the car started up, it dragged De Leon some 100 feet before he was thrown off, bloodied with cuts and and scrapes, and a sprained hand.Soon after, a Hispanic woman in her 20s, with a baby in her back seat, raced to his side. She tended to him before calling 9-1-1."Shows there are good people. She was more worried about me than her baby," said De Leon.When help arrived and she left, De Leon never got her name. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new report shows that the San Diego Unified School District in 2017 saw significant grade-level gains in reading and math scores.The program, called the National Assessment of Education Progress, or NAEP, shows that San Diego is the only large urban district in the nation to see significant test score increases in fourth-grade reading and math.San Diego Unified also performed significantly higher than public schools in large cities in both fourth and eighth-grade math and reading.The 2017 results mitigate a significant score drop in fourth-grade math in 2015, which the district says is due to the implementation of Common Core.The district said Tuesday that long-term data shows a generally upward trend overall.“San Diego Unified stands out as a hub of academic excellence and innovation, where students learn and thrive thanks to the dedication of our teachers,” said Superintendent Cindy Marten. “The NAEP results underscore the incredible teaching and learning that’s occurring in San Diego Unified schools every day.” 1064
