CLEVELAND — Several Ohio Department of Transportation cameras captured an apparent meteor flash Wednesday morning. The astronomical event was seen throughout Ohio, with some Twitter users reporting their first sighting at around 6:30 a.m. local time.In the southeast portion of the state, Luke Starner of Lancaster, Ohio, captured a dazzling video of the fireball streaking across the sky from a camera at his home. Raw video of fireball in the sky over Ohio Saw one during my jog this morning in Brunswick. Just a big flash of color and gone. Lit up the ground and left a small smoke trail that looked like a cheese puff— chaser (@chaser84) September 30, 2020 ODOT cameras caught a brief, bright flash of light, with sightings reported brighter in eastern Ohio. The vast majority occur over oceans and uninhabited areas. When fireballs occur at night, they stand little chance of being seen due to the lower number of persons out to notice them. This story was originally published by Kaylyn Hlavaty on WEWS in Cleveland. 1994

Cyber Monday shoppers may also want to consider refurbished gifts.Monday, U.S. PIRG released its “Fixed for the Holidays” update. It found the variety has expanded greatly since the last report two years ago. There are options like refurbished smartphones, vacuums or professional cameras.“The deals and the quality have gotten a lot better, and in fact some of the refurbishers have told us that they've seen a significant increase in their operations over the course of the pandemic,” said Nathan Proctor, Director of U.S. PIRG's Right to Repair campaign.Refurbished products can be a great alternative for new devices that are hard to find amid manufacturing disruptions caused by the pandemic. Plus, the savings can be significant. Most of the time, they’re even better than the discounts on Black Friday.Buying refurbished is also a green option because it cuts waste. Many of the big retailers do their own refurbishing. There's also certain websites U.S. PIRG recommends, like The Store, Back Market, and Gazelle. They have extensive quality checks and great coverage options.“We recommend some of the retailers we do because the warranties are so good. I mean you can get a product with a longer warranty from the refurbisher than the new equipment manufacturer provided,” said Proctor. When shopping refurbished, learn how the site differentiates its products. Then, decide what balance you're looking for. Some products may be less expensive but have more cosmetic issues like scratches and dings. Others were returned without ever being opened.Look for brands with a reputation for higher quality.A good rule of thumb is if it was cheaper when it was new, it's higher risk as refurbished. 1703

CLEVELAND — The morning of Nov. 23 started out like any other for Amanda Zupancic. She’s a special education teacher in Cleveland. Around 11 a.m. that morning, in what would be her 3rd period class, she was in session with a middle school student and his mom on Zoom in the upstairs office of her west Cleveland home. She was suddenly interrupted with a loud noise.“I heard a glass-shattering crash downstairs,” she said. “I was like, 'hold on, I think someone is breaking into my house, just joking.' I didn’t think anyone would be breaking into my house in the middle of the day,” she said. But that is exactly what was happening.“There was a man walking though my baby gate with a knife in his hand walking upstairs,” said Zupancic. “He started threatening me, yelling at me, calling me names. He grabbed me upstairs into my bedroom.”The man began rummaging through her things, all the while Zupancic’s student and his family were still on that Zoom call listening from Lake County. In the 911 call, the student’s dad tried to explain the situation. “The teacher that teaches my son, somebody broke into her house we saw it on the Zoom,” said the student’s dad to a Lake County dispatcher. As the robber frantically searched for valuables, the dad gave as much detail to the dispatcher as he could.“I guess she heard the man say, ‘Get on the floor. I’m going to cut your f-ing throat,’” he told the dispatcher.Zupancic told the man he could have her car keys but they were downstairs. He agreed she could go and get them. She said, instead of getting the keys, she let her two dogs out.“When I reached for my keys, instead I opened the gate and I have a German shepherd and a Great Dane-boxer mix. So the German Shepherd stood between myself and this guy, and the Great Dane Boxer mix went at him,” she said.It gave her enough time to think.“I just grabbed a pair of scissors and I chased him to the front door,” she said. She continued to chase him down her street.“I started chasing him with this pair of scissors, in my house shoes, down the street, yelling 'help me, help me, this guy robbed me,'” she said.Zupancic said a local contractor working on a house in her neighborhood saw the encounter and tackled the man to the ground and detained him until Cleveland police arrived. When they got there, they arrested Charles Derosett.Derosett is charged with aggravated robbery and felonious assault as well as other charges. He is a convicted felon, previously serving time behind bars for aggravated robbery.Zupancic is still shaken up. But said between her student’s parents, her dogs, her neighbors and random strangers, there’s more heroes in this story than there are villains.“I’m lucky that there’s enough loving people in the world to figure this all out.”This story originally reported by Jessi Schultz on News5Cleveland.com. 2843

C-SPAN has suspended its political editor Steve Scully indefinitely after he admitted to lying about having his Twitter account hacked. A week ago, when Scully was questioned about a message he had sent to former Trump aide Anthony Scaramucci seeking advice, Scully claimed that someone had gotten into his account and sent it. But he admitted this week to his bosses that he had lied, feeling the pressure of attacks from President Donald Trump. Scully was supposed to moderate the second debate between Trump and Democrat Joe Biden, which had been scheduled for Thursday but was canceled. C-SPAN said it hoped to bring Scully back after some distance from the episode.President Trump seized on Thursday's news. 721

Country star Jason Aldean was performing when a gunman began firing on the crowd from inside Mandalay Bay. Now, Aldean is opening up about how he's been coping since the tragedy of Oct. 1, 2017.  "I think you go through a lot of different emotions of being thankful that none of your family and friends was injured. And then you feel guilty," said Aldean. "Those people are there to see your show so that's awful."Since that dreadful night in October, Aldean has struggled with the complexity of his feelings about surviving the country's deadliest mass shooting in modern history.  "And then you start doing that thing, like, 'Man, did that really happen. Did that really happen to us?' It seems so crazy. Like how could that even be a thing?"Aldean said his wife and crew were a great comfort to him, but it was visiting the injured in the hospital and the birth of his son that put things in perspective. "That helped. Going back to the hospital, going back to Vegas and seeing those people. Seeing some of the strength they were having," said Aldean. " People laid up in the hospital and smiling and laughing and just being glad they were alive."His son was born exactly two months after the Las Vegas shooting."Really to me, he just gave me something else to focus on. Something else to think about on a daily basis," he said. "Something else to keep my mind occupied where I wasn't just reliving it over, over and over." RELATED: Jason Aldean's wife posts about book from 1 October survivors Aldean has new music coming out Friday and is up for Entertainer of the Year for the third year in a row at the Academy of Country Music Awards. The awards are being held in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand on April 15. 1779
