SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As people continue to try to purchase essential items, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office says it's protecting consumers by going after retailers who are illegally price gouging."We have received well over 100 calls to our tip line," said Damon Mosler, the Chief of the Econcomic Crimes Division at the DA's Office.It's illegal for businesses to overcharge more than 10 percent for essential items during a state of emergency.RELATED: Unemployment benefits could take weeks amid coronavirus pandemicMosler said there are currently 70 reports under investigation."We are going to the store to verify the price and the item and we are serving them with a warning letter explaining what the law is, explaining what the violation is," he explained.After that the crews, who are undercover, will return to the reported store to do compliance checks and make sure the retailers are responsive to the warnings.RELATED: City Council puts stop on evictions during coronavirus pandemicAbout a dozen business owners have been warned in the county so far. Certain medical and healthcare items are not allowed for sale on OfferUp, including listings that claim the item can diagnose, cure, mitigate, treat, or prevent a disease or virus, or any items that claim to be CDC or WHO approved. For the time being, we are also removing all hand sanitizer, toilet paper, protective masks, and disinfecting items, regardless of price. These items are now prohibited on OfferUp.""People just have to be very mindful of the situation we're all in," said Mosler. "This is very stressful. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As San Diego County's back country communities brace for the prospect of losing power, political leaders are starting to take aim at the idea of pulling the plug on them.San Diego Gas and Electric has notified upwards of 30,000 customers that it could cut their power Thursday if it deems necessary to prevent a wildfire. At a news conference in San Diego Wednesday, Gov. Gavin Newsom praised SDG&E as a leader in wildfire prevention, but expressed frustration at the situation. He directed most of his anger toward Pacific Gas and Electric, which has cut off power to hundreds of thousands of customers in Northern California to prevent its equipment from starting wildfires. She said the utility is in communication with fire departments and has crews and arborists deployed across the county. "The population here in San Diego really need to be mindful that this is about their safety at the end of the day," Griffin said. SDG&E began the practice of cutting power in 2013. That's a big change from the 2007 wildfires, which investigators say happened as a result of SDG&E equipment. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Authorities are investigating a car fire in Spring Valley that may possibly be linked to a fire that scorched part of a La Mesa hair salon less than half an hour before.At around 3:10 a.m. Monday, firefighters and sheriff’s Bomb/Arson investigators were called to the Slay Lounge on 8739 Broadway in La Mesa in response to a fire in a Dumpster.The fire caused some minor damage to the salon and some other businesses at the strip mall.Investigators discovered an object at the scene that may have sparked the blaze.Less than 30 minutes later, crews were called to an import auto car lot in the 9100 block of Campo Road in Spring Valley in response to a car on fire. One car was completely destroyed, and the flames damaged other nearby vehicles. Investigators are trying to determine if the car fire is somehow related to the Dumpster fire in La Mesa. No injuries were reported in either blaze. 921

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cal Trans closed down a section of southbound I-5 Thursday night.The closer started at 9:30 p.m. from the I-805 split to La Jolla Village Drive.The closure is expected to last until 5 a.m. Friday.Crews shut down the section of freeway due to necessary work on the construction of a trolley overpass over the interstate. Teams needed to bring heavy equipment onto the freeway to pour concrete onto the structure.Overnight and early morning commuters that take I-5 SB is being rerouted to I-805 SB and will need to use Highway 52 or I-8 to cut over.Crews say they will need to do follow up work within on the overpass in the next few weeks, so drivers should expect the same closure again. 716

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Come February, SeaWorld San Diego is hoping to fill the night sky over Mission Bay with the lights of a drone show.The California Coastal Commission began considering their proposal for a test run at a hearing near San Francisco Thursday.For decades, fireworks capped off a day of summer fun at SeaWorld. A few years ago - amid ongoing concerns over impacts on wildlife, water quality and pets - SeaWorld scaled back the shows, in favor of laser light shows. Now comes another high-flying option in the form of the drone light shows like those that have wowed at places like Universal Studios and Disney World.
