DENVER — Being a school nurse is a lot more than bumps, bruises, bloody noses and band-aids. And now, with a shortage of nurses, school nurses are getting even more added to their workload.“I travel around from school to school,” said Brooke Goudy, a school nurse at Bromwell Elementary School in Denver. “I work one school, two days out of the week; another one, one day out of the week; and two days a week, I’m going around and evaluating school nurses. So I’m visiting maybe up to 10 schools a month.”For most of Goudy’s career, this has been her schedule. She’s not an outlier. A lot of school nurses have a hectic schedule. It’s a growing problem for them and the schools they serve. In 2018, more than 60 percent of schools across the country didn’t have a nurse on campus full time, according to the National Association of School Nurses.“Every day is extremely busy,” Goudy said.School nursing shortages have been a key point at teacher strikes in Chicago and Los Angeles this year. The Chicago walkout was settled when the district agreed to put a nurse on campus at all of the city’s schools, five days a week. That’s become rare in most states.“In the past I’ve been traveling to a different school nearly every day of the week,” Goudy said. The lack of nurses puts a strain on the students who need them.“There was times when my seizures were out of hand,” said Delvechio Jones, a recent high school graduate. “I had Nurse Lucy and the rest of the faculty and staff here to help me with them.”Jones said having a nurse helped him be in class, even when he didn’t want to be.“She was there for me when I needed her the most, and she helped me get through a lot of tough things,” he said.Lucy Roberts is a school nurse at the high school Jones graduated from. However, she’s not a full-time staff member there. “I work in this school three days a week,” she said. The rest of the time she’s at other schools in the district. The other two days, Manual High School goes without a nurse. When a nurse isn’t around, schools have turned to other solutions.Kelly Grenham has been with Children’s Hospital Colorado for decades. For almost two decades, she has been a school nurse consultant. While she trains school nurses, she also trains everyone else. “They’re the secretaries, the office clerks, the people that are in the office, the bus drivers,” Grenham said. “I’m training the people there to make sure every other day of the week that they are safe.”Full-time employees at schools have taken on some nurse responsibilities. Goudy has monthly meetings with full-time school staff members to go over plans to keep kids healthy.“Schools as a whole are trying to figure out how to get more school nurses,” Grenham said.“They need the money to be able to do that, and sometimes with their budget, they can’t,” Goudy said.About 76.7% of school nurses are funded by local education dollars, according to the National Association of School Nurses.“Community members understand the kind of impact that can be had with a school nurse in the building,” Roberts said. “Parents and community members can take action by telling principals, ‘Why don’t you have a nurse here?’ ”“The research does show if you have management of chronic health conditions, the visits to the emergency room go way down,” Grenham said.“Health comes first. If we don’t have a healthy student, they can’t learn,” Goudy said. 3413

Despite the rise of streaming services like Netflix, going to the movies is still a billion dollar business in America. COVID-19 has closed the doors of theaters across the nation, but as things start to reopen, some theaters are prepping for incoming changes. The Ruth Sokolof Theater in Omaha was getting ready for a busy summer, but thanks to the pandemic they were dealt a plot twist. “Our priority is and will continue to be reopening when it’s safe and appropriate to do so,” said Casey Logan, Deputy Director of Film Streams.Their doors have been shut since early March, and with so many seats close together, things will definitely look different when the show goes on.“A checkerboard style seating where there’s groups of seating all with six feet or more apart so that there is that distance between groups in the theaters,” said Logan. He says certain events like one-time screenings with a visiting filmmaker that brings hundreds of people won’t be presented the same or maybe, not at all. “We’re just expected that there would be events that in normal times that we would be presenting that we won’t be able to present in the months ahead,” said Logan.Limited crowd size and social distancing are the two big changes, but there’s other things theaters should consider.“You don’t give the same seat to two consecutive shows and in-between screenings you have to somehow sanitize the theater,” said Dr. Phani Tej Adidam, Chair & Professor of Marketing of Entrepreneurship at UNO.He adds moviegoers should be part of a loyalty program for contact tracing purposes.“If something happens they should have the ability to trace all the people who came in and all the people they were in contact with,” said Adidam.Theaters may struggle with content as well, as summer blockbusters continue to be delayed. Logan says it may take time, but he’s confident the industry will bounce back.“I think people miss that experience of coming to cinemas, we’re certainly hearing from a lot of people that are looking forward to the day when we reopen so that they can have those experiences again,” said Logan. He also says changes to concessions will also be important to limit person to person interaction, and that buying tickets online before the show, is something movie goers should take advantage of. 2313

COVID-19 has claimed the lives of thousands of people around world. It has sent financial markets into a downward spiral and now, the backbone of the American economy, roughly 30 million small businesses, is in jeopardy.“Most small businesses really don’t have much in the way of cashflow,” said Todd McCracken. “They are in the position to last for days maybe weeks, for the most part, if they don’t have money coming in the door.”McCracken is with the National Small Business Association. Many of NSBA’s 65,000 members have had to shutter their doors temporarily in the name of public health, but the longer these businesses remain closed, the more concern there is over whether some will ever reopen.“Small businesses are half our economy,” McCraken added. “Most new jobs are provided by smaller companies and about half of all non-governmental employment is provided by smaller businesses.”So, what exactly do small businesses in America need right now to survive this pandemic, the financial side at least?“They need liquidity, they need cash. That’s the bottom line,” said McCracken. Some small businesses are getting cash from bigger companies, like Facebook. Last week, the social media giant pledged 0 million in grants for 30,000 small businesses struggling right now.In addition, the U.S. small business administration has begun offering up to million in low-interest disaster relief loans to small businesses effect by COVID-19. The loans are 2.75 to 3.75 percent.Meanwhile, a growing number of states, like Florida, are offering no-interest loans. Typically though, they max out at ,000 per small business.Importantly to note, whether a business is applying for private sector grants or government loans, they should expect the process for both to take a few weeks. A few weeks could just be too long for many of the small business feeling the financial impact of this pandemic, and that is why organizations like the NSBA are closely watching the second stimulus package being proposed in congress. The latest version of the package would offer 0 billion in small business loans that are expected to be issued in a faster timeframe and with more substantial benefits. The catch is small businesses who get this money have to commit to not to laying off their current employees.“This is a really good package for small companies,” said McCracken. “It would allow them to get a loan, we hope very quickly to support their operations but importantly the amount they spent on staffing and their rent payments can be completely forgiven.”What is loaned but not used for rent and staffing would have to be paid back, but the business has a year to do so. “There are still going to be hiccups I am sure, because we’ve never tried anything like this before,” said McCracken, “because this is literally going to be millions of small businesses applying for these loans in a very tight window.”McCracken, most financial analysts and even economist believe if small businesses can stay afloat, then the economy and average Americans should be able to bounce back faster post-COVID-19. 3110

Dozens of beachgoers stepped in to help several pilot whales that beached on a coastal Georgia island on Tuesday, according to local authorities and videos shared on social media.Dixie McCoy, who witnessed the rescue and posted live footage of it on Facebook, told CNN at least 20 whales came near the shore of St. Simons Island's East Beach.About five or six whales from the pod beached themselves, and bystanders worked to push the animals back to sea, Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) spokesman Tyler Jones told CNN in an emailed statement. 568
